Despite being the less fancied of the Team Williams quartet and drawing wide, there has been good specking for Twilight Payment with Sportsbet.com.au to take out the Melbourne Cup (3200m).
The Joseph O’Brien trained gelding makes his Australian debut in the race that stops a nation, off the back of a down the track effort in the Irish St Leger and despite drawing gate 19, there has been support for him at the big odds by punters who have backed him into $46 after he opened at $101 and at one point touched $41.
The best backed runner early in betting was Mer De Glace who touched $6.50, in from his opening quote of $8 however since the Call Of The Card on Monday all of the big money on the Melbourne Cup has been for the Chris Waller trained Finche and the Japanese galloper is now out to $8.50.
Finche was $10 on Monday morning but punters have continued to back him at every turn which has seen him shorten into equal favourite for the race at $8.50 with many of the pro punters thinking he will start even shorter come race time.
Other runners at odds to have backing are Mustajeer who is $21 into $18, Prince Of Arran who is $21 into $18, Surprise Baby $17 into $14, Il Paradiso who got out to $18 and is now back into $14 and Youngstar who is $41 into $34.
