We have a look at a few runners who look over the odds ahead of Saturday’s meeting at Flemington. These aren’t neccesarily straight out tips but horses we think should firm in the market and currently represent ‘overs’ in early markets.
]Race 3 – 9 Gold Chariot
This horse has had two runs to date so far and shown good talent whilst being beaten in both runs. He’s shown good natural speed last start, after coming from near last on debut and that’s a big tick for me as he has shown versatility.
Think the two horses that have beat him in Storm Leopard and Redwood Lane are talented youngsters and thought he’s ran well against them, and the maidens have rated well especially relative to his opposition here.
Thought the favourite Our Chief is very short going to 2000m for the first time and whilst he’s in the red-hot Danny O’Brien stable and has Mark Zahra in the saddle, on his form and ratings profile I couldn’t have him priced as a $2.60 chance.
The Mean Fiddler looks a rising talent, and he probably deserves to be near the top of the market but given a favourable map, good ratings profile and fact his form looks strong I think the $6 being shopped for Gold Chariot is a bit big.
Odds: $5.50 @ swiftbet
Race 4 – 6 Dark Simba
Surprised this horse isn’t tighter in the market given his most recent run at Cranbourne when the tight turning track didn’t really suit him, but he worked home well in what looks a good race with Watersports and Porter backing up the form last week.
Key now for this horse could be the big track in Flemington and senior rider Luke Currie going on who has had a great summer period.
Really like him stepping up in trip to the 1800m and feel he’s got the right form lines and platform to see him run a big race here. He’s started $3.20 and $3.40 in his last two starts with things against him and feel now at $7 he appeals as a betting prospect in the same class.

Race 10 – 10 Our Justify
Only had the two runs at Mornington and both have been super to the eye, coming from well back and running slick sectionals home on both occasions.
Thought the win last start had more merit because had to chase from a long way out and was exposed early but still kept finding the line.
The favourite Sass Appeal has rated well in two starts and looks a horse on the rise but outside her the race looks open and though the $15 on offer with a good barrier draw, step up to 1400m and bigger track really appealed.
