Group l racing kicks off at Brisbane this Saturday at Doomben, with the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) shaping up to be a beauty.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2025 Doomben 10,000.
2025 Doomben 10,000 Runner Preview:
1. Overpass: Overpass has to be given another chance. He comes through The Quokka at Ascot where he went too hard on speed and he tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through behind Joker’s Grin. Is there petrol left in the tank? Not sure, but he has runs on the board to be respected.
2. Schwarz: Connections are saying they may scratch if the rain keeps coming and we get a bog. Find that interesting given he did lead throughout and win the William Reid on a track which was pretty much the same. But, they are saying his next run will be his last before stud duties. Job has been done for him and I’ll risk him.
3. Mazu: I think he is the bet in the race. There are better horses in this race but just not sure how well they are going at the moment whereas this guy is in winning form after his Hall Mark triumph at Randwick. He has run well in Brisbane previously and will love a wet track.
4. Veight: Gelded and he does have the class/quality. But, just thought he could have done more in a trial and I reckon he’s much better on top of the ground.
5. Desert Lightning: Can make a case for this guy at a big price. He resumed in the All Aged where he didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight but was good late. He handles wet ground, he has upside, will be strong late…a win wouldn’t shock.
6. Rothfire: He stuck on really well fresh in the Victory Stakes and the romantic in me says you’d love to see him win. But I do think his better days are behind him.
7. Golden Mile: SCR
8. Zarastro: SCR
9. Libertad: Christmas/Birthday/Easter all in one when winning the Victory Stakes. Not for me here.
10. Jedibeel: He is the map horse. Got too far back in the Victory Stakes and had to make his run in inferior ground but surged and was in front before and after the past, but the photo went the way of Libertad. He was a few weeks between runs there so with upside/improvement, he takes beating.
11. Hidden Wealth: Big tick for him is the wet track, but 1200m at this level has to be a genuine query.
12. Sunshine In Paris: She would be even money if she drew a good gate. She just can’t draw inside. But, she does get Blinkers first time and gets J Mac back on so she is very likeable against these. Just needs luck.
13. Belclare: SCR
14. Benedetta: Thought she was a real eye catcher in the All Aged, getting too far back and held up at times but closed strongly when eventually clear. Tick over trial last week was strong and in a fast run 1200m, she’ll get her chance.
15. Lady Laguna: Lady Laguna is a big price I feel. She attempted to lead throughout in the Hawkesbury Crown last time and she gave a strong kick from the front but couldn’t quite see it through when third to City Of Lights. She loves racing in Brisbane and the stable is flying.
16. Estriella: SCR
17. Payline (First Emergency): Sneaky flying but not up to this level.

Think they will go quick here with a host of speed runners engaged. Hidden Wealth, Zarastro, Overpass, Schwarz, Mazu and Rothfire, maybe even Lady Laguna, will go forward, generating a strong tempo. Golden Mile, Jedibeel and Benedetta all map handy.
