One of the key races at Randwick this Saturday is the Canterbury Stakes (1300m), where Joliestar is a dominant favourite.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2026 Canterbury Stakes.
2026 Canterbury Stakes Runner Preview:
1. Gringotts: To my eye, I think his trials have been so so and likely has eyes on the Ryder, but off his trials, I am firmly against him.
2. Headley Grange: Had a super Winter/Spring but had enough when down the track in The Big Dance behind Gringotts. Trials have been solid but has eyes on the Doncaster.
3. Linebacker: Linebacker is a class animal that resumes for the O’Shea/Charlton camp. He had a pretty solid Spring prep and the difference has clearly been his manhood being removed. He has trialled up really well for the return, should press forward and be dangerous.
4. Yorkshire: Dodging the handicapper for the Doncaster, like several here. Came of age in the Summer with wins in the Festival and then The Ingham. Beauty of a horse, will press forward, but lacks the class.
5. Encap: Convinced he has a big engine but even more convinced he has got serious head noise. Pass.
6. Joliestar: Hard to get away from Joliestar. She was arrogant in her return in the Expressway, getting better as the race went on, knuckling down with purpose late to wear down Caballus. Looks so well placed at 1300m at WFA, good upside and only has to hold her form to be the likely winner again.
7. Lady Shenandoah: Lady Shenandoah is an improver from the Expressway. She didn’t look 100% ready re condition and while she didn’t win, I thought she ran a beauty the way she closed off in defeat behind Joliestar. She’ll be strong late and I feel has more improvement to come.
8. Beiwacht: Is he a one hit wonder or is there life to him? That Golden Rose win…was out of this world, but can he replicate that at all? Because before and after that win, he was a solid horse, but not G1 quality. For me, I think he’s a one hit wonder and is gross unders.
9. Napoleonic: I am very keen to take this guy on. He’s here to play given he is a colt chasing the G1 win and is hard fit, but I do feel that 1300m at this level is a bridge too far for him. I’d love to see him freshened up for the Arrowfield Sprint.
10. Nepotism: Given he has only won two races, he is still elgibile for Class 3 races. He’s not a top class horse, or even a class horse.

2026 Canterbury Stakes Speed Map
Beiwacht is going to take no prisoners you’d imagine and lead this field up. Yorkshire settles handy, likewise Napoleonic. Linebacker should also settle forward while Joliestar, you’d assume, lobs into a beaut spot.
