Zaaki is the dominant favourite in this weekends All Star Mile

The feature at Flemington this Saturday is the $5 Million All Star Mile (1600m), with the race headlined by the appearance of star galloper Zaaki, who will go around as the one to beat.

Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2022 All Star Mile.

2022 All Star Mile Speed Map

Streets Of Avalon has drawn inside and I think will press forward to land on speed early before opting for cover via Lightsaber and Zaaki. I think that pair will control proceedings. The one that looks like he could get a nasty run is I’m Thunderstruck, who draws gate one and is a horse who looks like he needs galloping room.

2022 All Star Mile Runner Preview

1. I’m Thunderstruck: Jury is on him IMO. Pass mark I thought fresh in the CF Orr. Given none in the Futurity, but thought he was entitled to finish closer given he did no work in the run. Gate one is the worst barrier for him. He needs galloping room to build the revs. I think he can win, but things need to fall into place, and I don’t think they will.
2. Zaaki: Been hot on Zaaki for this race for a couple of months and won’t be dropping off now. Resumed in the Blamey where he was run down late by Inspirational Girl, but there were a number of reasons for that. He was first up, he had to carry 6kg more, and he wasn’t allowed to race to his true pattern, which is clear air and rolling to build full momentum.
3. Cascadian: Found out last Saturday in a brutally run Australian Cup but far from disgraced in defeat. Back to the mile is a positive, but back to a mile off that hard 2000m? I’m saying no as a winning chance, but one that could sneak a first four spot.
4. Streets Of Avalon: Ran a beauty in this race last year, but his best days are behind him and his form this time does look quite plain, so can’t see him threatening.

5. Lunar Fox: Ran well in this race last year after his Guineas triumph, but not going well enough at the moment to trouble this lot. Happy to risk.
6. King Magnus: Sit/sprint of the Blamey didn’t suit him, but while he did so well in the Spring, just not sure he’s going as well this prep and at WFA, he’ll struggle.

7. Callsign Mav: Chased a strong speed in the Australian Cup and tired late. Like him back to the mile but he’s not good enough to be troubling these.
8. Mr Brightside: Just went too slow in front in the Blamey when fourth to Inspirational Girl, but through the line, he was quite good. Lands in a plum spot, could sneak a first four spot…but at WFA, I can’t see him winning.
9. Icebath: I want to be very forgiving of the Guy Walter run. That track was completely bottomless and just don’t think she handled it. If it’s a sit/sprint, she has the turn of foot to trouble them. If it’s truly run, which I think it will be, she’ll struggle.
10. Tofane: Tofane is a ripper for Michael Moroney. She is just so damn honest and genuine. Led and spanked them in the CF Orr before a gutsy effort behind Sierra Sue in the Futurity. 1600m at this level sees her right out IMO, but with a soft trip, she can handle it, and she tries her guts out.
11. Sierra Sue: Got the A1 run to win the Futurity. She has been a revelation the last six months and deserves a crack at a race like this, but 1600m is a bridge too far.
12. Inspirational Girl: Inspirational Girl did have the run under the belt and that, plus the weight pull, was the reason she nailed Zaaki in the Blamey, but keep in mind that was just her third run since 2020, so she’s got plenty of upside to come and a truly run mile will be right up her alley.
13. Captivant: A firm deck has him in the mix as a first four threat. Wheels were spinning in the Guineas so I think back on top of the ground, his best can see him finish top four.
14. Lightsaber: Put himself on speed in the Guineas and looked the winner but was nabbed late by Hitotsu. Different kettle of fish here but has the right racing pattern to give himself every chance.
15. Pinstriped: Arguably should have won the Guineas after having no luck in the straight. But he’s nearly second favourite. Lining him up against Tofane, a four time Group l winner, from a market perspective, he’s not a bet. If he gets to double figures on the day, he could be a saver bet.

2022 All Star Mile $100 Betting Strategy:

I’m keeping it really simple here. $100 on Zaaki at $3.40. The wide gate is the reason you’re getting that price and not $2-$2.50. Normal luck and he wins.

Group l Strategy Outlay: $4370
Group l Strategy Return: $9530.6
