A shock to most, the winner at $151 on track and the races rank outsider, My Kingdom Of Fife and jockey Dwayne Dunn took pleasure in the solid speed set up front and managed to grab the race along the rail from Hidden Wonder, Bold Glance and the fast finishing Altered Boy.My Kingdom Of Fife, a gelding formerly owned by the Queen, earned a shot at the Group One race named after her when he scored an upset win in the Doncaster Prelude.
He will run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 23 after he came along the rails to defy his $151 quote and win the Group Three 1600m race at his first Australian start.
Richard Pegum purchased the son of Kingmambo who was formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute, and new trainer Chris Waller was looking at the Wagga Cup in May before Saturday’s success caused a sudden rethink.
“He has been with us for about three months and we didn’t really know what to expect,” Waller said.
“We’re realistic people and we thought it might be the Wagga Cup or the Doomben Cup for him depending on how he went.
“They might have to find another horse for the Wagga Cup now.”
My Kingdom Of Fife was guided along the inside from back in the field by Dwayne Dunn and the ground-saving ride helped the gelding get the better of Hidden Wonder ($15) to win by a neck with Bold Glance ($14) a long neck away third.
“I didn’t expect him to win but he was trained to win the race,” Waller said.
“We’ve bought a nice horse, he has surprised us but as we do with all our horses we try and give them every chance leading into a race and he’s had a couple of barrier trials and plenty of work and was given the perfect ride.”
