He had to win it via a protest, but Jacquinot has won against the older horses at Group l level, taking out the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Sandown on Saturday.

1. Jacquinot: He’s a very expensive pony now with this win at WFA against the older horses. Had a suck run in transit. Just needed clear air and got it, driving hard late. Copped interference and according to the Stewards, that cost him winning the race.
Rating: 8.5/10
2. Gentleman Roy: My opinion, he should have kept the race. But that aside, he was outstanding. Led throughout and yes, got it cheap mid race, but his first real look against the big boys and he passed with flying colours. He’ll be hard to beat in the Futurity.

3. Nugget: First time against the big boys and girls and he passed with flying colours. Yes, he had the 1/1 sit and had every chance in a sit/sprint, but he kept finding the line and was very good in defeat. First run in several weeks, he’s got room for improvement.

4. I’m Thunderstruck: Solid run without jumping up and down. He was back in a slowly run race, but I thought he was there to win 250m out. But, again, he wanted to lay in badly under pressure. If I am Terry Henderson of OTI, I wouldn’t be putting J Kah on because while she is a gun rider, she’s very weak with her left handed whip action. He’s flying, don’t sack.

5. Mr Brightside: Run of the race I thought. Race wasn’t run to suit at all and he was dragged back to last. Did a mighty job to get as close as he did and off that effort, he almost becomes top seed for the All Star Mile. Excellent return.

6. Tuvalu: Got into a lovely spot, landing the box seat behind Gentelman Roy and seemed to have every chance. Just lacked the change up speed to go with them late fresh so I’d be forgiving. Next time, let him have clear air and let him roll.

7. Aegon: Real eye catcher. He was back on the fence and given the race shape, he had zero hope, but loved the way he found the line late in a good return. He’s right on track for the Futurity and potentially the All Star Mile.

8. Turaath: Did no work on the fence and worked to the line just fair. Assuming they are trying to be Sierra Sue 2.0, but can confidently say that won’t be the case. Mares races only for her. Plain again.

9. Western Empire: Does Bob Peters know what an olive branch looks like? If so, he really needs to extend one out to Grant & Alana Williams. The WA trainers haven’t worked, Danny O’Brien didn’t work and they are going further backwards with John Leek Jr. He had every chance on speed but was the first horse beat. Plain.

10. Callsign Mav: He got back in the run one off the fence. Tracked up well enough and presented wider but just lacked the change up speed to go with them.
