2022 Caulfield Guineas Post Race Horse Ratings
1. Golden Mile: Got into a beautiful spot just off the speed under J Mac. Presented on the turn and when he needed to dig in and win, that he did and he surged best to win in a blanket finish. Unlucky runners in behind, but right place, right time and he was too good.
Rating: 8.5/10
2. Elliptical: He was one of several unlucky runners. Zigged and zagged in the straight when full of running. Got clear late and surged to just miss. Can easily make a case to say he should have won. Ripping run, with more intent in the ride compared to last start.
Rating: 8/10
3. Ospienko: He was enormous. Thought they would ride with intent but they dragged back from the wide gate and he motored late right out wide to finish third. He was only second up, so you’d think he has eyes on something like the Derby and if he keeps progressing the way he is, on dry ground, he’s the Derby pony. Excellent effort.
Rating: 8.5/10
4. Berkeley Square: I think if Williams had his time again, he wouldn’t worry solely on holding the back of Golden Mile. I think a half decent steer and he wins the race. Just got badly held up at the wrong stage but his last 50m and through the line was very good. He’s a leading Derby horse.
Rating: 8/10
5. Tijuana: Given a lovely ride by Zahra and was there to win at the top of the straight. Just 1600m at the top level just found him out but he stuck on and was very game in defeat when fifth. That’s as good as he goes.
Rating: 7/10
6. Amenable: Another that has eyes on the Derby you would assume. Got back in the run from the wide and was never really a winning factor but really liked the way he closed off, as he has done throughout the prep. He just wants more ground now, so follow him.
Rating: 7.5/10
7. The Fortune Teller: Got the 1/1 sit under Jamie Kah and was in a good spot, ready to bounce. Loomed for a stride or two, but class kicked in and he doesn’t have it compared to these. Ran better than what his SP thought.
Rating: 6.5/10
8. Bank Maur: Wide throughout with cover and came with a solid run in the straight but the last furlong just saw him out and he weakened late. I reckon back to 1400m and back in grade can see him bounce back.
Rarting: 6/10
9. Dashing: He led and got control under Linda Meech. That was the only way he was going to beat runners home was if Meech led and walked. She did that and he ran well under the circumstances.
Rating: 5/10
10. Elkington Road: Did no work from the gate and didn’t have the clearest of paths in the straight, but was safely held, as expected off so so wins.
Rating: 4/10
11. Meridius: Just lost sight of the bunny on the turn and came off the bit but picked up late and was solid to the line and through it. Maybe head towards the Vase and give him a chance to showcase Derby credentials? Or go towards the Carbine Club.
Rating: 4/10
12. Foujita San: Pretty confirmed what was thought prior to the race. He’s just no good. Drew wide yes and did make up some headway, but was never threatening.
Rating: 3/10
13. Sir Bailey: Had a suck run from the inside gate but when asked for the effort, he found little and was very plain. He’s not up to this level so look for him in something easier.
Rating: 2/10
14. Skyphios: First up and given he has already secured a Derby berth, this was a prep run for that. No turn of foot, quite one paced, wait for him at 2000m+.
Rating: 2/10
15. Millane: He’s a horse who has had no luck this time in. Wide no cover here and rightfully dropped out. I think just forget this prep and wait for him in the Autumn. He’s a nice horse.
Rarting: 2/10
16. Lethal Thoughts: Landed outside the speed but he was the first horse beat. He’s not a top line three year old so look for him in something much easier.
Rating: 1/10
