Amosu last years winner of the Magic Millions Debut

The Magic Millions Classic for the two year olds might be the headline act but the most intriguing race on the card is always the Magic Millions Debut where we get to see a full field of youngsters step out at the races for the first time. This years edition of the race looks another lottery for punters but with our analysis of the breeding and pedigrees of each of the horses the picture becomes a bit clearer.

Spirit Of Boom – Stellara (Sepoy)

A $100,000 purchase bred by P Trowbridge, he is one of the three runners for his highly successful Eureka Stud-bred sire.

His Muswellbrook-winning dam is a half-sister to the South African-based dual Group winner Ekitfaa, whilst his grandam is a half-sister to the New Zealand Gr.1 winner Calveen, the Gr.2 gallopers Kosi Bay and Fireworks (dam of the Listed winner Millane) and the Listed winner Striker (dam of the Gr.3 WA Oaks winner First Impressions).

Carrying three strains of Danehill, he hails from the same prolific Prunella family as Spirit Of Boom and his sire Sequalo, with Spirit Of Boom picking up strongly on the influence of this family.

2. PROFIT IN PARADISE

Profiteer – Gobelin (Dawn Approach)

Bred by the Watershed Partnership, he fetched $35,000 at the National Yearling Sale.

Hailing from the debut crop of his sire, a son of Capitalist, he is the second foal for the lightly raced Orange winner Gobelin whose winning dam Tappestry is a Pentire half-sister to the Group winners Folding Gear and Royal Success.

Profit In Paradise’s dual stakes-winning third dam Royal Show is a half-sister to the Listed winner Likes To Rule.

3. TENGUN TOMMY

Flying Artie – She’s A Tigress (Better Than Ready)

A bargain $6,000 purchase at the National Yearling Sale, he was bred by P Nugent out of the good race mare She’s A Tigress, winner of five races over sprinting trips.

A half-sister to the multiple city winner Ready For Anything, She’s A Tigress is a granddaughter of the stakes winner Excitable Lady, dam of Listed winner Fraar Magic, from the family of feature two-year-old race winners Knowledge, Startling Lass and Midnight Fever.

A descendant of the great matriarch Lady Josephine, Tengun Tommy carries crosses of the influential local stallions Century and Todman, as well as a strain of that champion’s full brother Noholme.

4. WENDELL

Written Tycoon – A Little Jewel (No Nay Never)

This Yulong-bred colt by their Champion Sire is a $450,000 purchase out of an unraced imported mare whose stakes-winning dam Crystal Crossing also produced the Gr.1 UK St Leger winner Rule Of Law.

A full sister to the Gr.3 winner Circle Of Gold, Crystal Crossing has had her influence felt as ancestress of the stakes winners Honor Marie, Tomyris, Capitana Bling, Feed The Flame, Yellowbrick Road and Sacred Life.

Her grandam Favoletta, winner of the Gr.1 Irish 1000 Guineas, has also been a prolific force, with her latest Australian stakes-winning descendant being last year’s Gr.3 Colin Stephen Quality winner Piggyback.

5. DOLLY BOOM

Spirit Of Boom – Sweet Dolly (Real Saga)

Bred by Daandine Pastoral and sold for $140,000 at the March Sale, she is the first foal for a mare who showed plenty of natural ability, winning four of her five starts including the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes.

Her two-time-winning dam Sweet Cherub, by Golden Slipper winner Canny Lad, is a half-sister to the stakes-placed eight-time winner Beatniks, dam of the Listed winner Wonder Boy.

Sweet Cherub’s dam Hippy is a half-sister to the Listed winner Love And Money, out of a daughter of the Gr.3 winner Sovereign Chick whose daughter The Cloisters won the Gr.1 AJC Champagne Stakes.

Like her sire’s stakes winners Prince Of Boom, Keshi Boom, Simply Fly, Champagne Boom and Heaven’s Deal, she is line-bred to Spirit Of Boom’s second dam sire Semipalatinsk.

6. LADY MOSCATO

Home Affairs – Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt)

A Katom-bred filly from the first crop of their popular dual Gr.1-winning I Am Invincible stallion, she was a $1.05 million purchase for the Waterhouse & Bott stable.

She is the third foal for the dual Group winner Champagne Cuddles, whose victories include a Gr.3 at the Gold Coast, while her dam Sky Cuddle won the Gr.1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington.

Carrying crosses of Canny Lad, Danehill and Lunchtime, Lady Moscato boasts relations including the Group winners Highly Recommended, Sky Love, Sky Command, Fast Clip, Adamantium, Acecay and Groucho.

7. TOORAK JEWEL

Tassort – Toorak Rose (Toorak Toff)

Bred in Queensland by Lourdes Park Stud, this $36,000 purchase by a young stallion who made a strong start at stud is the second named foal for her lightly raced dam, a Moe debut winner who finished second at Flemington at her final start.

Toorak Rose is out of the stakes-placed Strategic mare Plans, whose city-winning dam Sardaffe is out of a three-quarter sister to the Listed winner Biscarina, dam of multiple Gr.1-winning sprinter Schillaci.

Toorak Jewel’s pedigree brings together half-brothers Lomond and Seattle Slew, providing a 6 × 6 cross of the influential mare My Charmer.

8. WARREGO RIVER

Spirit Of Boom – A River Somewhere (Exceed And Excel)

Bred by Peachester Lodge and sold for $275,000, she is the first foal for her lightly raced dam, a Gold Coast and Doomben winner from just seven starts.

A River Somewhere is a full sister to the Gr.2-winning stallion Headwater out of the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove, whose Listed-winning dam Ride The Rapids is ancestress of a long list of stakes winners including Captivant, Crown Prosecutor, Kulgrinda, Band Of Brothers and River Delta.

Warrego River is a descendant of Simon’s Shoes, the influential fourth dam of Thatch, to whom Spirit Of Boom is line-bred 4 × 5.

9. CHERRY BOMSHELL

Lucky Vega – Not A Cherry (Not A Single Doubt)

Another Yulong-bred runner, a daughter of their Gr.1 resident Lucky Vega, she is the fourth foal produced by the placed Not A Cherry, whose city-winning son Rhythm Of Love is Gr.3 placed.

Not A Cherry is out of the imported stakes winner Cherokee Echo, a full sister to the Listed winner Notoriously.

Cherokee Echo’s stakes-placed dam Silver Echo is a daughter of the dual stakes winner Silver And Jade.

10. SWEET REBELLION

Russian Revolution – Wholesome Delight (Exceed And Excel)

Bred by Gooree Park Stud, this $15,000 weanling who later resold for $25,000 is the first foal for her dam, a Canberra and Goulburn winner from just six starts.

A half-sister to the Gr.2 Roman Consul Stakes winner King’s Gambit, Wholesome Delight is out of the dual Gr.3-winning Encosta de Lago mare Sultry Feeling, whose half-brother Swift Alliance won three Gr.3 races.

Bred on a 4 × 3 Danehill cross, she also boasts duplications of Fanfreluche, Natalma and Special.

11. SHE’S HOTSTUFF

Standout – Vibrant (Not A Single Doubt)

Bred by Lyndhurst Stud, she is amongst the first ten named foals for her sire, a Gr.3-winning son of Exceed And Excel.

A $37,500 purchase at the March Sale, she is the first foal for the Wyong winner Vibrant, whose stakes-placed city-winning dam Brightest by Galileo is a half-sister to the dual Gr.3 winner Nayeli.

Vibrant’s grandam is the Gr.1 mare Kapchat, dam of the stakes winners Kaphero and Princesa and ancestress of Star Of Giselle, Starelle, Solicit and Karavas, from the family of Golden Slipper-winning broodmare Courtza.

Boasting a 4 × 4 Easy Date cross, she also carries close-up strains of Danehill and Rory’s Jester.

12. CASCADING

Headwater – Miz Mosley (Swiss Ace)

Bred by Gerry Harvey by Exceed And Excel’s Gr.2-winning son Headwater, he is the second of only two foals produced by the placed Miz Mosley, who died young.

A $55,000 graduate of the Adelaide Magic Millions, Cascading is a granddaughter of the city winner Miz Monroe, whose half-sister Mexican Rose won twice at Gr.3 level in Singapore and produced the Gr.2 winner Tijuana.

A descendant of the influential matriarch Marchetta, Cascading has amongst her relations the stakes winners Qali Al Farrasha and Nucleozor.
