Broadsiding has landed a second Group 1 win taking out the J J Atkins at Eagle Farm

Godolphin colt Broadsiding may have earned himself Two-Year-Old of the Year honours with a devastating second Group 1 victory.

Broadsiding took out the J J Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday to go with his earlier Group 1 victory in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

That Champagne Stakes victory was the second leg of four straight victories for Broadsiding who travelled to Brisbane after that win to claim the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on June 1.

Broadsiding was impressive in his Brisbane debut coming from a rearwards position, but he was even more so on Saturday when he showed a devastating turn of foot soon after straightening.

Back to the exclusion of almost every other runner to run the $1.60 betting apps favourite under James Mcdonald, Broadsiding scored by 4-¼ lengths from Bittercreek ($9.50) with Bosustow ($26) a short-half-head away third.

Trainer James Cummings said Broadsiding was such a good colt and was not concerned by the dry ground after his previous three wins had been on rain-affected surfaces.

“The only real doubt throughout the week for some was a dry track or perhaps even a long prep,” Cummings said.

“But I’ve got such a good team that I’ve been able to keep him not only fit but also healthy, well, growing, and loving his training.

“He paraded like a colt that was thriving and he got the big salute there from James McDonald.

“He had that feel about perhaps being the best two-year-old in the country this season.

“He’s been a horse that has been able to keep improving and being by Too Darn Hot out of a Street Cry mare, he’s got his future well and truly assured on the roster at Darley.”

Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Lady Camelot, also narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes earlier in the year, looked to have Two-Year-Old of the Year honours all wrapped up until Broadsiding past two devastating victories.

McDonald said the colt had shown champion qualities with Saturday’s win.

“Champion two-year-old that one,” McDonald said.

“I’ve had enough practices being in behind today, that I thought I better let that one go. I thought we executed the gallop beautifully.

“He’s a ball of muscle. He knows he’s really good. He’s a character but James has done a phenomenal job, and I can’t stress how good a job he’s done, to be fair.

“He keeps raising the bar, but he’s got a good colt on his hands.

“He’s special.”
