Tragic news struck the racing community as two-time Melbourne Cup contender Grand Promenade was euthanized following a fall during the opening race at Warrnambool on Monday.
The eight-year-old, carrying the racing colours of Gerry Ryan, was in a promising position before clipping the second-last obstacle and tumbling heavily.
Despite winning eight races and accumulating over $1.2 million in earnings throughout his career, Grand Promenade’s life was cut short.
Notably, he secured a commendable sixth place in the 2021 Melbourne Cup.
Racing Victoria confirmed the horse’s passing and assured that jockey Luke Dempsey escaped serious injury.
The incident has prompted a review by the Jumps Review Panel to assess potential safety enhancements.
As customary, a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
Racing Victoria extended condolences to Grand Promenade’s owners, trainer Shane Jackson, and stable staff, acknowledging their sorrow at the loss of the beloved horse.
