Champion jockey Glen Boss is hoping for one thing at Doomben on Saturday – Hay List’s performance to match the hype.
Once again Saturday’s Group One BTC Cup (1200m) is being billed as a clash between the world’s best sprinter Black Caviar and Boss’ mount Hay List, who is considered the horse capable of testing the unbeaten superstar.
The pair have met three times with Hay List no match for the Peter Moody-trained sprinting machine in their previous encounters.
“I just hope that he turns up and really has a red hot go and she does the same which you know she is going to,” Boss told Sky Sports Radio from Singapore on Thursday.
“They’ll get a bumper crowd and I hope they get the contest that fits the build up, because often these things are built up and built up and then you get there and it’s a fizzer.
“I’m hoping it’s a real contest for both horses and people get to see two great sprinters at the top of their game and I hope they match motors. It would be fantastic.”
Black Caviar is out to extend her unbeaten run to 13 in her Brisbane debut with the BTC Cup her chance at a sixth consecutive Group One success.
The wonder mare hasn’t raced since gunning down Hay List in a memorable TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 9, while Hay List returned two weeks after that defeat and hammered his rivals in the Group One All-Aged Stakes (1400m).
Boss replaced the injured Glyn Schofield that day and flies back from Singapore after Friday night’s Kranji meeting to partner Hay List again in his moment of truth at Doomben.
Black Caviar is at $1.18 with Hay List $5.50 in the eight-horse field.
Three-year-old Buffering is third favourite at $21.
“I’m hoping that he (Hay List) gets up there at Doomben on Saturday and is in great shape and really puts his best foot forward and brings his real A-game, because I would like to see a real content,” Boss said.
“If he doesn’t bring his A-game then she just smashes him again. If he does bring his A-game it might be a real good contest and I’m looking forward to it.”
