Trainer Leon Corstens has pumped the work into stakes-placed mare Ky’s The Limit in the hope of her winning her first city race at Flemington.

Corstens admitted he was stretching the Bertolini four-year-old to jump in distance from 1200m to 1600m in Saturday’s PHHWV Second Chance Plate but has every reason to believe she is up it.

While a city maiden, Ky’s The Limit last November suggested she was up to much better races when second to Happy Hippy in the Listed Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown.

Corstens said she was getting to her peak fitness with two runs under her belt this preparation and the extra work he has given her, but wants the track as firm as possible at Flemington to make her job easier.

“I have put plenty of miles in her legs and I just hope it is enough,” Corstens said.

“If the track is very heavy it might be against her as she is quite a big mare and it just worries me a bit that I may be asking a bit too much of her.

“I just hope she can cope.”

Ky’s The Limit’s three wins in nine starts have been at Geelong twice and at Ballarat and she is $8 with TAB Sportsbet for Flemington.

Only the Robbie Griffiths-trained Gail ($3.10) is ahead of her in the market.

Gail is expected to improve dramatically on her last-start down the track performance in the Group Two Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley when she half-reared at the start and had no luck in the straight.

In-form jockey Dean Yendall will ride Gail who has only missed a place twice in 10 starts.

Stephen Baster has stuck with Ky’s The Limit after he was impressed with her last run when a 2-1/2-length fourth to Cat’s Pyjamas in the Betfair Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield on March 26.

“It was a really good run the other day and Stephen was tickled pink with her,” Corstens said.

Corstens said he would keep his options open with Ky’s The Limit with regard to contesting another stakes race this campaign.

“It depends on what is around for her and what sort of form she heads back into,” he said.
