A horse Jason Coyle liked as a yearling because he was inexpensive has confirmed his potential for lucrative overseas offers by winning the $100,000 Inglis Challenge at Scone on Friday.
Sweet Serendipity attracted Hong Kong attention after a Sydney barrier trial win but the inquiries about a potential sale seem certain to go to another level after a clear-cut debut win in the first feature race of the Scone Cup carnival.
“There was interest after the trial and I daresay we’ll get a few more calls now,” Coyle said.
Bought for $9000 at last year’s Scone yearling sale, Sweet Serendipity ($4.80) repaid his purchase price more than six times over as he raced to a 2-3/4 length win over Rock My Fuji ($7.50) with Husswick ($41) a half neck third.
“I bought him because he was cheap in the hope he could improve into something every six months or so,” Coyle said.
The trainer gambled on Sweet Serendipity making it into the Challenge field without have a lead-up start.
“It was a case of putting all our eggs in one basket,” he said.
Coyle has ambitions for Sweet Serendipity but whether they are realised under his training remains uncertain.
“Hopefully next time in he will make a horse but every horse has got their price so we’ll see what happens,” he said.
