Another import, another winner.

And if Caulfield winner Midsummer Sun continues in the way trainer Sam Kavanagh anticipates, he will be around in the spring to mix it with the best.

Midsummer Sun, who was formerly trained by Sir Henry Cecil in England, continued the amazing run of success for imported gallopers, winning his second Australian race and his fifth overall with a determined effort in the Peter Street Handicap (2000m).

But perhaps the greatest merit that can be attached to the win is that Midsummer Sun beat another imported galloper from the stable of the all-conquering Chris Waller who was looking for his sixth city winner of the day after training four at Rosehill and one at Eagle Farm.

“He’s done a great job to win and he’s still got a lot to give,” Kavanagh said.

“And it’s nice to be able to beat one trained by someone like Chris Waller.”

Midsummer Sun ($6) beat the Waller-trained favourite Fulgur ($1.90) by 1-1/4 lengths with a neck to King’s A Star ($41) in third place.

For Kavanagh the win also gave impetus to his move to Sydney where he is to open stables in the new season.

“We’re getting a nice team of horses together, some handy imported horses, some yearlings – we’re looking forward to getting things rolling,” he said.

Midsummer Sun also helped his rider Glen Boss toward the first jockeys’ premiership of his career.

With some 12 weeks of the season to run, Boss has a long lead in the Melbourne championship over Craig Williams.

But Williams won’t ride again in Melbourne this season and Luke Nolen who is third place is 20 behind Boss.

“I’ve never won a premiership in my career and I’ll probably be finishing the season early to have a knee operation, so every winner will help,” Boss said.
