Injured apprentice Katelyn Mallyon has celebrated her Melbourne premiership win with the news she can return to trackwork in the near future.
Mallyon’s season ended in May when she suffered serious injuries including a fractured cheekbone and lacerated spleen in a race fall and she had to watch on while boyfriend Jake Noonan closed the gap.
Noonan, who ironically found himself in a similar postion last year when injured in a fall before season’s end, was five short of Mallyon after the weekend’s racing leaving her to become the first female to win the title.
Mallyon’s return to the track will be on hold for a couple of weeks while she accompanies Noonan to Macau where he competes in an international apprentices challenge at the weekend before the pair take a holiday in Bali.
“It’s a big achievement being the first female to win it,” Mallyon told racingvictoria.net.au.
“I missed winter, when my claim probably would have come in handy, but on a positive note, when I come back to riding I’ll still have a two-kilo claim.”
Mallyon, who was in an induced coma for a week following the fall, spent several weeks in a brace with limitations on what she was allowed to do.
“I went to the doctor’s the other day and he gave me the all clear to start exercising and doing a lot more stuff,” she said.
“When I come back from holidays I’ll get stuck back into trackwork and trials and work my way back up.
“I don’t want to rush back. I want to take it easy and slowly go through my trials and get my eye back in for it, but I’d like to say I’ll maybe be back mid-October.”
