For all the racehorses prepared by Canberra’s Nick Olive, few can rival the recent record of Fullerton who finally looks set to deliver in the Defence Force Cup at Queanbeyan on Sunday.
Fullerton has finished second at his past five starts, a feat in itself but one that has also been frustrating to all concerned.
The gelding ran second behind Setta Rocks in the Queanbeyan Cup over the same distance two weeks ago.
The $15,000 feature race looks an easier assignment on paper although Fullerton has 59kg to carry for jockey Brendan Ward.
Olive said it was just a matter of time before Fullerton broke through.
“He just needs a bit of luck to go his way and he can win again,” Olive said.
“He is paying his way without winning of late.”
Fullerton only opposes six rivals and races well at Queanbeyan where he has won twice from four starts.
The trend for Fullerton is noticeable with four starts over 2000 metres for as many seconds.
He has been runner-up 11 times from 29 starts, but has won on five occasions.
Track specialist Hey Porter won his latest start at Queanbeyan while local trainer Joe Cleary will be represented by High Density.
With two wins to his name from 28 starts, High Density is similar to Fullerton with seven seconds to his credit.
Jockey Richard Bensley won the Queanbeyan Cup this month and will be looking for another minor upset with Need To Show.
Weighted on the minimum with 54kg, Need To Show will be at his peak following two starts back from a break.
Top combination Keith Dryden and Kevin Sweeney will combine with Reigning Rhythm as they look to capture another feature race.
