The Broadmeadow track will be given a searching test on Thursday ahead of its scheduled reopening on Boxing Day.
Chief steward Ray Murrihy will make the trip to Newcastle to oversee three sets of gallops on the refurbished course proper.
It is the first step in ensuring Newcastle is ready for racing after it was shut down on October 20 because of safety concerns over undulations in certain sections of the track.
It has since undergone remedial work including levelling the undulations, shaving the grass between the 1250m and 150m marks and laying 20,000 square metres of new turf.
If the track copes with Thursday’s gallops, a set of barrier trials will be held on the course proper on Monday.
It is hoped Newcastle will be ready to hold the annual Boxing Day race meeting a week later, traditionally one of the club’s most popular fixtures of the year.
