Race 1. (11:55) The JBM Group Maiden 1200m
11 Billie The Great (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks prepped right up for a fresh win. She resumes, having not raced since Oct 25 at Launceston when back in the run and made up decent ground when finishing fourth. Given a good break, two sharp trial wins under the belt, Blinkers on, Froggy on…she’s ready to go.
13 Mel’s Street Above (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have an engine under the hood for John Keys. She debuted over 1100m here when attempting to lead throughout and she gave a decent kick from the front but couldn’t quite see it through and was run down late. 1200m is fine, good racing style, hard to beat.
7 Ellisphere (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1200m after racing over 1100m here on Australia Day where she got back to near last in the run and was never a factor when down the track. Has a gate to settle closer in the run and can run an improved race at odds.
Race 2. (12:26) Kevin Sharkie Maiden 1400m
11 Wannabe Ziggy (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to break the maiden tag and she strikes a very winnable race here. Her recent runs have come over this trip, the latest at Launceston when off speed and chased with purpose in a good effort in defeat. Blinkers on, can settle closer and still be effective late.
3 Light Force (Bet Now: $SP.00) is unknown at 1400m but has an inside gate and a kind map to use. Latest run was over 1200m here when wide, doing work in the run but he stayed on and was quite good in defeat I thought behind Tosen Fame. Gets a good run in transit and should be around the mark.
8 Nightclubbing (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1400m after racing over the mile here last time when attempting to lead throughout and giving a sight from the front but just failed to run the trip out so forgive and forget the run. Back in trip I like and with a more patient steer, she’s one for exotics.
Race 3. (12:58) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (68) 1400m
4 Dayan Star (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have returned really well for Imogen Miller and should prove hard to beat against these. Resumed with a bang at this track/distance, giving them a start and a beating, letting down with real purpose late to win and win well. Natural upside/improvement, he’s the to beat.
3 Carneros (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1400m for Barry Campbell after racing over the mile here last time when attempting to lead throughout and gave a strong kick from the front and tried hard but just tired when fourth. Gets in well after the claim and should be strong at the end.
9 Rigoletto (Bet Now: $SP.00) is dangerous with his best. He ran over the mile at Launceston last start, getting too far out of his ground but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Lily Luella. Like him back in trip and with a drag into the race, he’s a threat.
Race 4. (13:30) Strutt Stakes 2100m
1 Silver Dagger (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the one, clearly. She’s a very good filly and I’d say is the best 3YO 1600m+ filly in Tassie. Got a 12/10 in the Thousand Guineas last time and the ride won her the race, holding her up and let down with good change up speed to score. Gentle tempo should mean the best turn of foot comes to the fore and she has it.
6 Suntora (Bet Now: $SP.00) is on the quick back up after racing last Thursday at Pakenham over 2000m when taking on the older horses and she didn’t disgrace herself in defeat I thought behind a handy galloper, Cotton Tree. That was her first run in a few weeks so with room for upside/improvement, she’s dangerous.
2 Go Jeanie (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes through the Launceston Guineas when off the speed and tried to make a sustained run. He did make up ground, was a definite pass mark and didn’t disgrace himself behind Likeakalix. Has that 2100m run under the belt, which holds her in good stead.
Race 5. (14:05) Fred Westwood Memorial (Class 3) 1600m
1 Ashfall (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a good horse when right…but this is D Day for him I say. He ran over this track/distance on Australia Day last time out when off speed and chased okay but did have his chance and was a bit on the plain side behind Zewinna. He has that 1600m run under the belt and with Winkers on, Ben Melham on…it’s go time.
3 Fighting For Gold (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong in an eight start career and commands respect. She put together a couple of sharp wins before going to the mile at Launceston when off speed and kept chasing in a pretty good effort in defeat behind Lily Luella. 1/1 at Hobart, rates highly.
5 Did You Decide (Bet Now: $SP.00) is on the seven day back up after racing last Sunday at Launceston where he got back to near last in the run and stayed there, failing to get involved behind Lord Whitegate. Has a much better record at Hobart and is suited up in trip so don’t dismiss him.
Race 6. (14:40) Ladbrokes Plate (Class 1/Maiden) 1600m
6 I’m Chev (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me. He was a strong winner two back at the Devonport Synthetic before going to 1400m at Launceston when off speed and kept chasing with purpose in a pretty good effort in defeat behind Speed Rock. Like him up to the mile and gets Froggy back on.
4 Mateus (Bet Now: $SP.00) took a little while to break the maiden tag but the tag got broken last time at this track/distance, sitting off speed and in a driving go, finished best to score. Now he’s got that win on the board, he can certainly go on with it.
2 Captain Taz (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a John Keys trained gelding that resumes. He is first up, having not raced since Dec 4 at Launceston when wide, doing work and just feeling the pinch late in the piece. Given the break and his trial work to get ready has been sound. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (15:15) Bec Thomas MLC For Elwick Handicap (Class 5) 1200m
1 Jaguar Stone (Bet Now: $SP.00) is Stakes class in Tassie when at her best but she hasn’t quite gone on with it since her 3YO season. That said, she looks really well suited here. Ran over 1100m here last time out in the Lady Lynette when back in the run and wide but kept finding the line in a pretty good effort in defeat. If she gets luck in the run, she’ll take holding out.
3 Sweet Lucifer (Bet Now: $SP.00) is dangerous if he gets front end control. He attempted to lead throughout over 1400m last time, and gave a solid kick this time around, but just felt the pinch late. Like him back to 1200m and if he gets a cheap furlong, he’ll take running down.
4 Move On Over (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a handy mare that is first up. She resumes, with her last run coming on Oct 6 at Launceston when placing over 1200m when second to Geegees Gemstone. She looks to have trialled well for the return and gets the claim, so watch the market.
Race 8. (16:03) Hobart Cup 2400m
5 Arugamama (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a capable mare for Andrew Gluyas that ran behind Shaiyhar a few weeks back at Flemington. She did early work from the wide gate but she stayed on and was game in defeat when running fourth, beaten just over two lengths. Better run in transit here, she can win.
2 Promises Kept (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the pick of the traditional lead ins, bolting up in the Summer Cup. The ratings/data boys and girls say it was a career peak and the horse really seemed to react under the hard riding of Foley. He’s found winning form, his confidence is up, he can go on with it.
3 Alhambra Lad (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Tassie veteran for Team Payne and is capable with his best. He comes through the Summer Cup behind Promises Kept when back off the speed and seemed to have his chance, just whacking to the line late in the piece. Up in trip I like and is a knockout hope.
Race 9. (16:38) Thomas Lyons Stakes 1400m
1 The Inevitable (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be a very dominant favourite here and surprised black figures is available. He’s a beauty and comes here in ripping form off the back of a win in the Tassie Stakes where he gave them a start and a beating. Back to 1400m is fine, he’ll be strong late and has runs on the board.
8 Durazzo (Bet Now: $SP.00) has to handle the rise to WFA, proper WFA, but just how good is he? I think he’s pretty good, but he seems way too short despite a picket fence, his latest win being a spank job win over 1400m at Launceston. Can he bring his best to Hobart? Time will tell.
3 First Accused (Bet Now: $SP.00) lands on the bunny and will give cheek, as seen in the Tassie Stakes when attempting to lead throughout and giving a strong kick from the front but the end of 1600m at this level just found him out. Back to 1400m and with front end control, he’ll give a sight.
Race 10. (17:15) Mingari +Co Handicap (Class 1) 1100m
11 Swinging It (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found positive form and she can go on with it. She put together a couple of plain runs but found positive form last time when back off the speed over 1200m at Launceston and worked home strongly when second. Maps perfect and should be strong late.
2 Gazza’s Spirit (Bet Now: $SP.00) commands respect off the back of a maiden win over this track/distance, getting into a good spot near the speed before being clicked up and found under pressure to fend them off and get the job done. He can go on with it.
9 Geegeeschaser (Bet Now: $SP.00) ran down the track in the same race that Swinging It ran second in. She got into a decent spot on speed and tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through, tiring late in the piece. Like her back to 1100m and her racing style gives herself every chance.
