The Grafton Carnival continues on Wednesday, with an eight race meeting highlighted by the time honoured Ramornie Handicap (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Ramornie Handicap 🏆: View the Field for the Ramornie Handicap
Race 1. (12:29) Group 1 Horse Feeds Hcp (c2) 1100m
I’ll take a punt in the first via 8 Luvdisc (Bet Now: $41.00), who was formerly with Matty Dunn but is now with Robert Agnew. She promised a fair bit when with Dunn, especially last prep where she was really good fresh at Coffs, but after that she went backwards. Now with Agnew, thought the Taree trial was pretty good and finds a winnable race, assuming that Divine Approach runs in the Mother’s Gift.
2 Illecebrous (Bet Now: $3.00) is a daughter of More Than Ready for Kris Lees that seems to be getting better with racing. Just looked in need of the run fresh at Scone but liked the way she knuckled down to win over 1200m at Port Macquarie last time out, beating home War Cat, who won next start at Taree to frank the form. Back to 1100m is an interesting ploy, but can see good speed for her in front to finish over the top.
I’ve been on 4 Blevio (Bet Now: $13.00) her past couple and I don’t think she’s going too bad. Comes through the Illecebrous race at Port Macquarie mentioned above when wide with cover and battling away well, beaten a couple of lengths. Gets the Blinkers off and a 3kg swing from the Kris Lees filly. Not sure she wins, but can run a positive race at odds.
Race 2. (13:04) Winning Edge Presentations (c2) 1600m
Giving 5 Brigid Of Kildare (Bet Now: $13.00) another chance. I was really keen on her chances at Dubbo last time out and given the run she had just behind the speed, I thought it was race over, but as soon as she found clear air, she plodded and was awful in the straight. She’s better than that and love the jockey upgrade with Rachel King taking over.
4 Willo Titto (Bet Now: $2.70) is a daughter of Pierro for the Michael Costa team that has been pretty good in a couple of runs back from a spell. Worked home pretty well first up at Toowoomba before going to Casino where she seemed to get every chance from just off the speed but battled away well behindTis Toby. Her third up record does read pretty well for a race like this and stable rarely misfire when bringing one to Grafton.
I’m interested in 9 Zamosa (Bet Now: $6.50) for Mitch Fry. Trialled up really well prior to the resumption at Dalby in a Maiden where she spotted the leader, Miss Bulitz (Won since) 10+ lengths at one stage but loved the way she closed off and wound up to beat that horse. Clearly a harder assignment here, but form has been franked and stable finds Jason Collett to steer.
Race 3. (13:39) Grafton Taxis (bm58) 1400m
1 Achi Baba (Bet Now: $18.00) on top but without a great deal of confidence in a very tricky race. Grant Marshall trained gelding that has contested much stronger races in recent times, two back finishing down the track in the Aberdeen Cup before going to Scone where he was okay late behind Toe Tapper. Drops to 58 grade and gets the soft gate. Hard to beat.
2 Flash Aah (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Lucas Cranach for the Mitch Fry team that was unwanted in betting when resuming at Dalby but you had to like the way he finished the race off after doing work in the run, racing quite keenly as well. Collett rides and though drawn tricky, he’s got more upside than most and has winning form.
6 Kijito (Bet Now: $8.00) has a fab record at Grafton and I think can run well again. Two back over the mile here worked home okay without threatening before having a freshen up. Ran over 1200m at Casino where he got too far back in the run but loved the way he closed off. Suited up to 1400m and can sit much closer in the run from the draw.
Race 4. (14:14) Jacaranda Hotel Country Mdn 1000m
8 Marshall Dillon (Bet Now: $3.20) gets the Blinkers straight away after the debut and I see that as a big positive. He was heavily backed when debuting in a Casino maiden but was just very raw and new to the caper and didn’t have the turn of foot when asked, but picked up and surged late to just miss. has the Dunn/McGuren combo and a good gate, so clearly hard to beat.
4 Furphy (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Wandjina for Warren Gavenlock that is second up here after resuming over 1000m at Ballina when wide no cover on speed and was entitled to drop away but he kept grinding and stuck to the task really well I thought when second to Miss Magnolia. Form out of it has been okay and he should get on speed quite comfortably given there is little early speed here.
6 Line Up Girls (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Sizzling for Jenny Graham that resumes. Hasn’t raced since January 27 at Grafton over 1100m when off the speed and worked home pretty well late behind Queen Gina. Been given a good break and have liked the way he trialled at Taree. Interesting to see what the market does with him.
Race 5. (14:49) Kensei Club Returning 2021 (c2) 1100m
6 Hard Merchandise (Bet Now: $6.00) is one of mine in the sense I keep finding reasons to back him. Got the ability to put these away and I think he’s on track to do something here after his last start effort at this track/distance. He is a big boy that needs a few runs to get fully fit and I reckon the last start second to a city performed horse, Wander, will top him off beautifully for this.
2 Our Echo (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Matty Dunn trained gelding that resumes. He hasn’t raced since contesting the Northern Rivers Country Championship Qualifier over 1400m here when back near last in an on speed dominated affair and couldn’t come on behind Plonka. That form just reads so well for this, he’s trialled well…can he use gate one to advantage?
3 Eighth Immortal (Bet Now: $9.00) is with Mitch Newman and the stable are in form having had success on the Sunday meeting here. This horse was formerly with Tim Martin and did show some promise, winning first up at Gosford but didn’t do a great deal in two subsequent runs. Back to 1100m, with a freshen up, he’s a market watch for sure.
Race 6. (15:24) Grafton Guineas 1600m
This is a very tricky race with a number of chances. The good gate sways me the way of 2 Foxborough (Bet Now: $7.50) for the John Sargent team. She’s been up a fair while it seems but has had freshens up here and there. I thought she was excellent in defeat at Hawkesbury last start. McDougall had to hook back from the wide gate to near last but she produced some of the best late splits of the race when a narrow second to Cubix. Can sit much closer in the run from the draw and will take some beating.
4 Fashchanel (Bet Now: $3.60) has a decent engine under the hood. Ran good time when winning at Kembla fresh before having a few weeks off and racing over 1400m at Rosehill where her wheels were spinning on the wet track. I think the track will be firmer this time around and with upside to come, she’s a definite key chance against these.
The only horse from the Prelude I want to follow is 7 Group Think (Bet Now: $17.00). Very negative ride I thought from Looker that afternoon and just waited far too long to press the button, I dare say with this race in mind being the target. He’ll eat up the mile here. Lacks the class, but stable is firing and a strong mile will be ideal.
Race 7. (15:59) Ramornie Handicap 1200m
4 Haunted (Bet Now: $8.50) is knocking on the door to win one. Just a little query on him running a strong 1400m. Was there to win three weeks ago at Flemington over the trip and for a few strides did look the winner, but found one better in Heptagon, who at the time was flying. IMO, he doesn’t run a strong 1400m, so back to 1200m I do like and rates highly.
Class will carry 2 Snitz (Bet Now: $3.60) a long way here. Talented animal for Matty Dunn that is favourite for the Kosciuszko and will take a power of beating here. Hasn’t raced since the Bob Charley at Randwick where he was chasing a good speed and fought on bravely when third to Classique Legend. Scratched from the John Carlton and comes here fresh. Leading contender.
12 Boomtown Lass (Bet Now: $16.00) lacks the class of some of these, but she’s very genuine. Several weeks between runs since contesting the Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm when on speed and trying hard. Just tired late when fifth to In Good Time. In on the minimum and third up last prep ran a narrow second to recent Stakes winner Jami Lady.
Race 8. (16:34) Shirley Adams Oam Rememb. (c6) 2200m
11 Chilly Cha Cha (Bet Now: $3.50) looks the safe option in the last. Kris Lees trained mare that brings the Saturday metro form here having chased strongly last time out at Rosehill when third to a couple of handy types in Fulmina and Guise. Bit of a query at the trip, but does no work from the gate and finds a winnable race.
I think firmer footing will be ideal for the Kris Lees stayer 7 Fuji Fury (Bet Now: $10.00). Hasn’t been too bad in a couple of runs but the wet tracks probably haven’t been to his liking, but has been far from disgraced. Gets back onto firmer footing and gets really good weight relief from the Gosford run and should prove hard to beat.
13 Hanna From Havana (Bet Now: $27.00) lacks the class of some of these but I think she’s going well. Put together a couple of impressive wins on the bounce before being freshened up and contesting a couple of Highways where she couldn’t really fire on very testing ground. This looks more her distance range and can improve for sure.
