A bumper nine race card has been assembled for the Gold Coast this Saturday where it is Hollindale Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Hollindale Stakes π: View the Field and Odds for the Hollindale Stakes
Race 1. (11:25) Play Gold Coast (bm78) 1800m
I’m going to give 11 Kimpembe (Bet Now:Β $10.00) another chance. I was keen on his chances when he raced three weeks ago at Eagle Farm but I thought he had every chance behind Traduce, so on first look, he was plain, but the winner won again last Saturday, so the form hasn’t turned out too bad. I think back to 1800m is a tick and the jockey upgrade I like.
13 Olympic Class (Bet Now:Β $3.60) might well just be better than this lot, progress and measure up in the Derby. Only time will tell. I don’t think it was the strongest benchmark race he won fresh at the Sunny Coast, but credit to him, he was impressive and strong late over the 1400m. 1800m here should be no issue and lands in a plum spot from the draw.
8 I Could Do Better (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is racing like he wants more ground, and he gets that here. He ran over the mile at Doomben two weeks ago and that was a day where on speed/rail was dynamite, so given he was back and forced wide on the turn, he had no chance. Run was quite good so I think he’s a threat here.
Race 2. (12:04) Bat Out Of Hell 900m
The market will be fascinating with 2 Spurcraft (Bet Now:Β $7.50). Kelly Schweida trains this talented sprinter, who hasn’t raced since Feb 20 when a flop at Eagle Farm, but the ride from Jim Byrne wasn’t flash. He resumes without a public trial, but is a bomb when produced fresh and did run well in this race two years ago when first up.
6 Niedorp (Bet Now:Β $3.70) is a quality mare for Tony Gollan that resumes. She came of age when last in work, highlighted by a Stakes win. Ended the prep with a down the track effort in the Magic Millions F&M but she was far from disgraced behind Krone, who of course went on to win a Group l. Bomb when produced fresh and is hard to beat.
3 Usmanov (Bet Now:Β $3.10) can be a big improver in a race like this. He is back home after a mixed Melbourne campaign in the Autumn. Far from disgraced in the Boy Hoysted behind Fabergino, then was ridden too warm in a fast race won by Ancestry. This is his pet track/distance and should get a lovely run from the draw.
Race 3. (12:39) Gold Coast Cup 2400m
2 Lord Belvedere (Bet Now:Β $2.90) has these covered if he’s anywhere near his best. Jury is probably out on that after two runs back from a spell, but I’d be forgiving of the two runs. First up in the Mornington Cup, that was a barrier trial. Then the track was near bottomless at Caulfield last time. This track should improve come race day and Maher/Eustace 2000m+ is a proven formula.
Market will be fascinating with 4 Humbolt Current (Bet Now:Β $4.40). He looked a great winning chance last time out at Doomben, but the market took a proper set against him, came for the stablemate Stardome, who lobbed into a beaut spot while this guy got held up in a nasty spot. The run was still good and I think Jim Byrne back on is a big plus.
8 Alakahan (Bet Now:Β $4.60) commands respect. Team Freedman trained stayer that had to use all of the 2400m to win last time out on the Kenso track. He looked like not getting there, but surged hard late to get up and win. Stable finds Craig Williams to steer and overall, this race isn’t strong.
Race 4. (13:14) The Goldmarket 1200m
It’ s hard to get away from 3 Racecourse Road (Bet Now:Β $3.90), who is flying this time in for Kelly Schweida. Has won 2/2 this prep, winning over 1000m here fresh before leading throughout and being dominant at Doomben four weeks ago. Should lob into a beaut spot from the draw, and just hard to knock the way he is racing.
Huge watch on 8 Baller (Bet Now:Β $6.00), who has had a few homes throughout his career and is now with Tony Gollan. Was with Chris Waller last prep and teased on a number of occasions to win, but just couldn’t quite get there. Now with Gollan, has trialled well leading in and does have class.
10 Westlink (Bet Now:Β $41.00) is bursting to win a race for Darren Hyde. Was on his back three weeks ago at eagle Farm and how he didn’t win, I do not know. Looked all over a winner when he hit the front, but Enterprise Keren surged late and the strength of Huxtable compared to Leah Kilner was the difference on the line. He’s flying and deserves a win.
Race 5. (13:49) Ken Russell Memorial 1200m
I’m keen to see 4 Ranch Hand (Bet Now:Β $2.40) resume. I think he might be the JJ Atkins horse for Chris Waller. Whatever he did in the first prep was a bonus because he did look a horse that would get better with time. Has had the prep under the belt now and I thought his recent trial win at Rosehill was such a lovely piece of work. He’s ready to rock and roll and make a statement here.
5 Debussy (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is three weeks between runs for the Edmonds camp since winning on debut at Eagle farm. Showed good early toe from the outset to lead the field up and from there, he was just too good, with sustained speed coming to the fore. Just a query of stretching that brilliance to 1200m.
3 Subterranean (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is one that can fill a first four spot. Ran two weeks ago at Doomben where he had a decent enough run in transit near the speed. Just when the sprint went on, he was left a bit flat footed, but he picked up and wasn’t too bad late behind Tiger Heart. Not sure he wins, but one for exotics.
Race 6. (14:24) G. C. Bracelet 1800m
I’m with 7 Grace And Harmony (Bet Now:Β $7.00) for the Waller camp. Thought she was such an impressive winner fresh at Newcastle over 1400m before racing over 1550m on the Kenso track and she was even more impressive in a field which had good depth to it. She eats up 1800m, got upside and in the right camp.
It’s already job done for 2 Easifar (Bet Now:Β $7.00) given she is a blacktype winner having won the Princess Stakes two weeks ago at Doomben. She knuckled down strongly in an on pace/rail dominated affair, wearing down the hot pot Tycoon Evie. How strong is that form? Not sure, but off that, 1800m here is no issue.
3 Good Soize (Bet Now:Β $12.00) looks the leading local for the Oaks. I thought she did more than enough fresh in the Princess Stakes. Had no hope the way the race was run but her finale was very good for a filly that is bred to get an Oaks trip. She’s got more upside than most and will be strong late.
Race 7. (15:04) Gold Coast Guineas 1200m
12 Marboosha (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is a quality filly for Team Snowden that comes back slightly in trip but she does have the class factor compared to the majority of these. Probably found the best ground last start in the P J Bell but still had to take advantage and that she did, launching late to just miss out on the win when just failing to nab Matchmaker. Hard to beat against this lot.
1 Amish Boy (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is suited in a race like tis for the Maher/Eustace camp. Freshened up with an eye towards the Arrowfield and the move worked. He finished off strongly from the back when third to Wild Ruler. Fitter and back a bit in depth, he definitely appeals against this lot.
If the inside is okay, I think 6 Immortal Love (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is in with a shout. Ran at Flemington on Anzac Day over 1400m where he looked to be bolting under Froggy but perhaps 1400m just found him out. 1200m record doe see him have a win over Tagaloa, which clearly reads well for a race like this, he gets a soft run and Nash steers.
Race 8. (15:44) A.d. Hollindale Stakes 1800m
This is one of the stronger editions of the Hollindale I can remember in some time. I reckon 1 Fifty Stars (Bet Now:Β $8.50) is on track. Jury was out after his Australian Cup/All Star Mile runs, but freshened up, went to the All Aged, and his effort from the back was absolutely enormous behind Kolding. Fitter, up in trip, should get juice in the track…I think he only runs well.
9 Melody Belle (Bet Now:Β $7.00) is a champion mare who should prove hard to beat. Been freshened up since running in the Tancred, where the 2400m was just a bridge too far for her behind Sir Dragonet. Like most engaged here, eyes are on the Doomben Cup, but she does have the brilliance over some of these.
13 Vanna Girl (Bet Now:Β $15.00) has home track advantage and upside given she is only third up. Brilliant winner fresh at Doomben before going to the Queen Of The Turf where nothing went right for her and she should have finished closer behind Nettoyer. Has a fab record on her home track and is hard to beat.
Race 9. (16:24) Silk Stocking 1400m
The O’Dea/Hoysted camp has done a super job since taking over the training of 7 Wonderful Riri (Bet Now:Β $4.20) from Paul Preusker. This mare is loving life in Queensland and I think she can win again. Drove through hard late to win four weeks ago under another lovely steer from Ben Thompson. No reason why she can’t continue winning.
3 Sofie’s Gold Class (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a key chance. Resumed two weeks ago at Doomben and while she was never really a winning threat, I thought her finale was more than sound late behind a smart one in Skins. Should do no work from the inside draw and be strong at the end of this.
16 Shahzade (Bet Now:Β $10.00) can be a big improver here. Resumed a few weeks ago in the Distaff at Caulfield where she was back in a slowly run race and couldn’t get involved as a winning threat, but didn’t mind her finale behind Thousand Wishes. In a leading camp and should appreciate a truly run 1400m.
