8/1/2021 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Canterbury

Night racing continues at Canterbury this Friday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

The first starters look to have the edge here in the opener and am going the way of 9 Larkspur Run (Bet Now: $5.00), on debut for James Cummings. Thought her recent trial win on the Polytrack at Warwick Farm was quite good, under a good hold and charging through the line. Looks to have been given a good grounding for start one.

10 Ruinart (Bet Now: $2.80) has been popular in early betting and I can understand why given she bolted up to win her Hawkesbury trial by over six lengths. The knock I have is the time she ran was just fair relative to the trial session, so I’d wait if you like her and you should get $3+ come jump time. Looks talented, hard to beat, but prefer to watch.

2 Bil Colyns (Bet Now: $14.00) looks to be the value in the race. Son of Not A Single Doubt for Gary Portelli that trialled alongside Larkspur Run and ran second, closing off nicely under minimal pressure. He draws to get the suck run on the fence and has the claim for Sherry.

Does look a race in two between the two big guns in betting. 6 Velorum (Bet Now: $2.05) gets my vote though. Hasn’t raced since his debut in the Autumn on the Kenso track when wide no cover in a total forgive behind Macroura, who went on to win at Stakes level. Thought his Rosehill trial was quite good and maps better than the other favourite.

2 Not Another Reiby (Bet Now: $3.60) gets Blinkers first time and that could spark improvement from him. Hard in the market when resuming at Newcastle and IMO he had every chance to win, but couldn’t finish it, eventually settling for a fourth. He’s better than that and hopefully the gear change will spark improvement for his supporters.

If you are looking for value in the race, it does sit with 4 Go Gazza (Bet Now: $10.00). Debuted in the same Newcastle race that Not Another Reiby resumed in and beat it home fair and square I thought, so bit surprised it is $4/thereabouts whereas this guy is double figures, and you’d think has more improvement to come.

5 Windsweep (Bet Now: $4.00) does look to be the map horse and despite being a touch disappointing last time, I’ll give her another chance. Was on her last start on the Kenso track where she had the dream run behind the speed and couldn’t finish it off, eventually settling for third. Looks to get a beaut sit off the speed here and be strong late now she’s third up and hard fit.

2 Barossa Rosa (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Tracey Bartley trained filly that resumes. Had a two run prep to start her career, just getting run down on debut before racing here and bumping into a handy one in Tiny. Liked the recent trial and from the gate, she either sits outside the lead or box seats. Hard to beat.

1 Bailieston (Bet Now: $12.00) interests me of the first starters. Jason Coyle trained filly that is having her second prep and first start off the back of two trials, both of which have been quite good to the eye. Likely to get back based on what I’ve seen at the trials, but should be running home well at the end.

4 Strange Charm (Bet Now: $2.80) to lead throughout. The scratchings has been kind to this mare and think she can get a soft lead, which is what she got when winning at this track/distance last time out under a lovely front running steer from Regan Bayliss, who remains on for tonight. Finds the front and will prove hard to run down.

6 Joliette (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Chris Waller trained mare that comes through the same race as Patrina mentioned above. This mare had a suck run out the back with plenty of cover and probably was entitled to finish off a bit better behind Trajection. Draws much better so can sit closer in the run and prove hard to beat.

8 Split Not A Shock (Bet Now: $7.50) will have confidence under the belt after winning last Tuesday on Gosford Guineas Day. J Mac gave her an absolute peach just off the speed, presented at the right time and finished best to win. Harder here, but she has the talent to measure up.

Bit surprised there is decent double figures on offer for 1 Tochi (Bet Now: $8.00), who saves her best for this track/distance and potentially gets a soft lead. She didn’t get a soft lead in the Belle Of The Turf last Tuesday at Gosford but was far from disgraced behind Threeood. That clearly reads well and gets the claim for Sherry.

3 Main Stage (Bet Now: $4.40) has had a few runs now for Gwenda Markwell and looks to be getting better with each outing. He ran here last Friday at this track/distance and worked home strongly from the back behind Amoretti. Will need luck in the run, but he’s going well and has quality when right.

7 Into The Oblivion (Bet Now: $9.50) can run another positive race. Was specked at a big price when racing here last Friday in the same race mentioned above won by Amoretti, and his late splits from near last were quite good. He will need a good speed in front to be a winning chance, but is more likely a place chance.

I’ll take a punt on 8 Revitup Rednut (Bet Now: $10.00). Greg Backhouse has him going very well at the moment, the latest run seeing him really warm to the task late behind Major Time. Noteworthy too that he was down to run on Monday at Moruya and in the half hour leading into his race, he was heavily backed, but the meeting got washed out. Double figures is a good enough gamble.

3 Rabbit Clause (Bet Now: $5.00) is a handy galloper for Joe Pride that resumed on his home track at Warwick Farm where he did a bit of work in the run but he didn’t throw it away and tried hard behind Exceltic. This race looks much weaker and with luck from the gate should be in the finish.

5 Sedition (Bet Now: $15.00) looks the value. Richard Litt trained gelding that ran in the Exceltic race mentioned above and he had next to no luck in the race, bolting for a run but it just didn’t happen for him. If the breaks go his way this time around, a win wouldn’t shock at all.

If this track is playing evenly and they can run on from the back, I’ll happily back 12 Surjin (Bet Now: $8.00) 1×3 at the big odds. I reckon Paul Perry has him flying but his problem is his awful racing pattern of flipping out the back. He ran in the Summer Provincial Final last Saturday and worked home strongly from near last. If he’s within range on the turn, he’s good enough.

8 Maui Girl (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the map horse if she can hold up from the gate. Jason Coyle has this mare going very well and interestingly was scratched from an earlier race in preference for this. Sat off a slow speed last time out but kept chasing and was good in defeat behind Strange Charm. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, she’ll take some beating.

2 Chocolatier (Bet Now: $9.50) doesn’t have the form on the board to threaten, but you have to respect anything Jason Deamer saddles up. His past two/three months, his runners have just been flying. This guy didn’t do much at Newcastle but his best is good enough and have to respect the stable.

Going with 10 Estrado (Bet Now: $6.50) in the get out. Resumed over 1100m at Warwick Farm where she was back behind the speed and looked to be going well but didn’t fire much in the straight and was disappointing. Since been back to the trials and went much better. Likes racing here and gets Rachel King steering from a soft draw.

1 Perigold (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Ryan/Alexiou trained gelding that is several weeks between runs since racing on the Kenso track. Settled off the pace and worked home well, but no match for impressive winner Mossman Gorge. Gets run of the race from the gate and is hard to beat.

12 Hurt Money (Bet Now: $4.80) jumps straight to metro level from a maiden but the maiden win was impressive. Came fresh at Hawkesbury where he had a good run in transit before angling into clear air and he leg down hard to win and win well, running decent time as well. He can measure up to these.

BEST BET: Race Two Number 6 Velorum

NEXT BEST: Race Five Number 1 Tochi

LONG SHOT: Race Seven Number 12 Surjin
