7/4/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Ascot, Marjorie Charleson Classic day

Ascot will host their traditional Good Friday meeting, headlined by the Marjorie Charleson Classic (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out thirteen metres for the entire circuit.

9 Perfect Bubbles (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the straight bat option in the opener. Smith/Leeson trained mare that resumed over 1400m here on March 1 where she got back in the run and did a really good job against the race shape when third to Here For Cheques, clocking some of the better late splits of the meeting. Pike rode there fresh and he sticks with the mare. Break between runs is a slight query but the depth here is on the thin side.

12 Slavica (Bet Now:  $SP.00) gets the Blinkers on and can be a sharp improver for Simon Miller. She ran over 1400m at Pinjarra around two weeks ago where she got back off the speed and took a while to wind into her work but was pretty good to the line without threatening when third to Yonga Lass. Like her up in trip and with the Blinkers on, I reckon they’ll be positive from the outset and prove hard to run down.

2 Haydross (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be suited back up in trip. He was 1600m back to 1300m last start at Mount Barker and I thought he did a pretty good job from near last on the turn. He was beaten seven lengths but his late splits weren’t too bad relative to the meeting, and were the best in the race. Up in trip again, he could be a sneaky chance if he is able to settle closer in the run.

1 Kosta’s Crown (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has struggled to greet the judge first throughout his career, winning just one of 13 but I reckon win two will come here. He resumed just under two weeks ago over 1200m here and I thought his run was full of merit given he was back in a sit/sprint, and considering the winner ran around 33.5 for the last 600m, those behind had no chance, including this guy, so the fact he made ground was a big tick. Back miles in depth, he’s clearly the one to beat.

2 Ruler Rocket (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should land in front and prove hard to run down. He resumed last Wednesday over 1000m at Belmont where he attempted to lead throughout and he did give a pretty good kick but being first up, condition just gave way late in the piece when a narrow third to Cosmopolitan Girl. Better for the run under the belt, he’ll get control on speed and be tough to get past.

5 Military Power (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Defcon for Jim Taylor that resumes. He had a two run prep in the Spring to start his career, both runs at Belmont and each time he was runner up. The knock is that both races have turned out to be pretty plain form references, but he seems a short course animal suited at 1100m here, especially with early toe, and has trialled up well leading in.

1 Givemeonereason (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been somewhat of an enigma throughout his career but if he brings his best here, he has plenty of them. He resumes for Simon Miller after a somewhat frustrating prep, albeit he did win in town and did run okay races behind a smart filly, My Bella Mae. Trialled at Belmont last week and moved very well I thought when a close up fourth. Maps ideally from gate one and has a bit on them re class/quality IMO.

5 Deep Envy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Team Pearce trained filly that has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell. Both runs have come at Pinjarra, winning fresh down the straight before going to 1200m where she tried hard but was no match late for Rusty Dreams, who I like on Saturday, so thinking that form will stand up here and Pike remains on. Leading chance.

4 Zangief (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Street Boss that resumes for the Smith/Leeson camp. He hasn’t raced since August 14 during the Kalgoorlie racing season when stepping up to 2140m and it was an end of prep run when down the track. Didn’t move too bad in a recent Belmont trial and while he is better suited over further, he can pull out a decent run fresh. First four contender.

1 Angelic Miss (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the class of the field and I’ll bank on that class getting her home here. She hasn’t raced since Feb 11 when fourth in the Cyril Flower where she had the suck run behind the speed but lacked any real turn of foot to make up ground behind My Bella Mae. Saves her best for when she is produced fresh and loves the track/distance. She’ll be within range on the turn and think she can overhaul her stablemate.

3 How’s The Serenity (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a quality mare for Simon Miller that resumes. She finished down the track behind Angelic Miss in the Scenic Blast but she was found to be lame so she had a clear excuse for the below par run. Track/distance specialist that should lead this field up comfortably and she is a dynamic mare when she gets control on speed.

4 Express Time (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks ready to go here. Neville Parnham trained mare that is first up, having not raced since the Scenic Blast when behind Angelic Miss. Market said it would be an end of prep run and she ran accordingly. Looked sharp in a recent Belmont trial win and likely gets the dream sit behind How’s The Serenity. From there, she is dangerous.

6 Maktastic (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. This guy has raced at Belmont his past couple over 2100m and 2200m respectively, where each time he has got back in the run and ran his race in patches but has kept finding the line each time. Big jockey upgrade and Visors on to sharpen him up, he’s the one they have to beat IMO.

5 Kia Ora Jewel (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise in trip for Sharon Miller. He was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1400m at Pinjarra on Sunday where he got a fair way out of his ground and was never a threat, but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Shaka Zulu. Fitter, up in trip with Pike on, he has plenty going for him to be a leading contender.

2 Boy Blue (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is dangerous if he can get some level of control in front. He got that at Belmont last time and got the win. He then went to Pinjarra where he attempted to lead throughout but couldn’t quite sustain it and felt the pinch late. This race is on the thin side, so if he finds the lead and dictates, this track can play up/in, so he then becomes a serious player.

9 Red Hot Hope (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should take beating here for Neville Parnham. He was 1500m to 2100m when racing at the midweeks at Belmont last time where they rode him stone cold and that seemed to do the trick because he found the line with real purpose late in the piece behind Gold Friars, clocking good late splits. Tumbles in weight after the claim and has that run under the belt to be suited at 2400m.

1 Friar Away (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has found a real purple patch at the moment, looking to make it three wins on the bounce. Both wins have come over 2200m here, the latest being two weeks ago when letting down with purpose from off the speed to overhaul the in form Soviet Spy to win impressively. He drops a fair bit in depth but cops that with a weight rise. If that is okay for him, he’s hard to beat.

7 Lautre (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 2400m. This guy ran over 2200m at Belmont last Wednesday where he got a fair way out of his ground and while he was never a threat, I didn’t mind the way he found the line late in the piece behind Magic Whistle. Can be a hard horse to catch but if he can use the inside gate to advantage and settle closer, he’ll be a threat for sure.

Sharply back in trip I find interesting with 2 Flower In The Wind (Bet Now:  $SP.00) but she is a mare who has found positive form and has found a winnable race. She was 1500m to 2200m when racing here two weeks ago and closed her race off nicely from off the speed when third to the in form Friar Away, who goes around in the previous race so you’ll know by jump time here how strong that form is. The steep reversing in trip is a query, but she’ll be strong late and there isn’t much depth to this line up.

1 Cwyer (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is lacking any real change up speed this time in and is racing like she wants more ground, which is what she gets here. She ran over 1500m here two weeks ago where she took a while to wind into her work and was never really likely but found the line well enough behind Rusty Spirit. Off that, an extra 100m is fine, and she gets in pretty well after the claim.

Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 3 His Eminence (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Colin Webster trained gelding that resumed over 1300m at Pinjarra and was good without threatening from off the speed behind an in form gelding, Starring Knight, who I think could be a moral on Saturday in the last at Ascot. Might want one more run and a rise in trip, but the return was too good to ignore. Definite winning chance.

8 Senorita Dorotea (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is bursting to win a race for Team Casey. She has finished runner up her past two, the latest being here last Saturday where she was off the speed throughout before being presented clear air and was there to win but couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to Ex Sport Girl. Like her on the back up, she maps perfect and strikes a very winnable race.

3 Born To Talk (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a model of consistency for Neville Parnham that is rarely far away from the action. That was the case just under two weeks ago at Pinjarra when near the speed and fought on gamely in defeat when a close up third to Double Spice. Saves his best for Ascot, he’s very genuine…but like Senorita Dorotea, he can struggle to put a race away, but should be around the mark.

4 Dani Bella (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a George Dupre trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since December 4 at Pinjarra when an all the way winner in the Grandstand Cup in a race which had far more depth than what she faces here. Not a noted fresh horse, and hasn’t trialled publicly, has the right racing style to run a cheeky race and potentially pinch a first four spot.

NEXT BEST: Race Three Number 1 Givemeonereason

LONG SHOT: Race Five Number 6 Maktastic
