A strong eight race card has been assembled for Newcastle on Friday, headlined by the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.

Back Me

Might be the first race, a 2YO maiden pretty much, but 1 Toscanini (Bet Now: $2.25) is a good thing against these. The Maher/Eustace stable trains this youngster, who has had three career outings, all of which in Victoria and over sprint trips. He’s been hitting the line strongly each time and is crying out for ground, which he gets here. Barring bad luck, he wins.

Danger

3 Sidearm (Bet Now: $3.80) is a John O’Shea trained colt that had really good specking when resuming over 1200m at Canterbury and although he did have the rail spot, which was gold that meeting, he still worked home well late behind Gravina, producing some of the best late splits of the race. Up to 1400m, if he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.

Long Shot

Not really much depth to this race outside Toscanini. Next best would be 5 Much Much Better (Bet Now: $4.20), who had trialled up okay prior to debuting at Warwick Farm on a wet track when wide throughout but he didn’t really fire a shot and was a beaten horse on the turn. Gets firmer footing, which should help, and does look a horse who wants ground.

Race 2. (14:15) Bella Group Services Maiden Plate 2300m

Up in trip looks a big tick for the John Sargent trained three year old 3 Holy Sunday (Bet Now: $2.30). Loved the way he knuckled down to win the maiden two back at Scone over 1400m before stepping up to 1750m at Muswellbrook when back and seemingly not handling the wet track, but picked up late and surged to just miss out on the win. Think he’s really well placed here.

Danger

7 Lord Tropicana (Bet Now: $4.20) isn’t far off a maiden win for Gary Portelli. Ran over 2300m at Goulburn last time out in an identical kind of race and tried hard, but clearly no match for Fox Beat, beaten by three or so lengths, but beat the rest by seven. Has that solid 2300m run under the belt for this, which should hold her in good stead.

Long Shot

2 Colonnade (Bet Now: $8.00) lacks the class/form of some of these, but he isn’t lacking fitness. Wasn’t too bad in defeat here two back behind Colette before stepping up to 2000m at Taree and was okay late but clearly no match when second to Into The Oblivion. Think 2300m will be okay for him and is one to include in multiples.

Race 3. (14:50) Posthaste Handicap (78) 900m

Back Me

He has to be giving them weight again, but that is what 1 All Stand (Bet Now: $3.70) has done at his past four and he’s just produced outstanding sustained speed to win all four runs, the latest over 1100m at Scone in the Quirindi when lumping 62.5kg and was just too speedy for them. Interesting back to 900m but has the early toe and hard to ignore what he’s done.

Danger

4 Iconic Star (Bet Now: $3.90) back to 900m on her home track looks a good recipe. This Kris Lees filly was very impressive in her opening two runs for the prep, each resulting in wins. Then raced over 1000m at Warwick Farm last time when on speed and tiring late behind Segalas. Like the set up for her here and she can definitely bounce back.

Long Shot

5 Iamacrumpet (Bet Now: $8.50) could be a sleeper here at odds. Jan Bowen trains this mare, who was good in defeat two back at Warwick Farm behind Iconic Star before going to the Kenso track when wide no cover in a total forgive behind Maroch. Much better suited with cover and should get a lovely run just off what will be a very fast speed.

Race 4. (15:30) Westfield Kotara Maiden Handicap 1400m

Back Me

Think 1 Zebrowski (Bet Now: $2.60) can resume a winner for Team Hawkes. Had a two run Spring prep to start his career. Could easily make a case he should have won on debut at Goulburn when running second. Went to the Bondi Stakes and was outclassed but far from disgraced behind Kubrick. Trial leading in was good and 1400m first up I do like.

Danger

2 Patrina (Bet Now: $2.50) is a lightly raced daughter of Pierro for Kylie Gavenlock who has finished runner up in both career outings. Was heavily backed when racing over 1200m here just under two weeks ago but just copped a bit too much heat on speed and couldn’t quite finish it off when pipped on the peg by Devil Dan. With a more conservative run in transit, 1400m should be fine.

Long Shot

4 Pellezzano (Bet Now: $8.50) is the knockout chance. Kris Lees filly that was most unlucky on debut at Scone before racing here and really liked the way she closed off in the Devil Dan maiden mentioned above. If she drew a positive gate, I’d almost have her on top. I think if she can roll forward without spending petrol tickets, she’ll take some beating.

Race 5. (16:10) Hungerford Hill Maiden Plate 1200m

Back Me

Looks a really good race for the James Cummings trained 5 Zakat (Bet Now: $3.10), who resumes after a three run Spring prep where he went close to winning each time he stepped out but couldn’t quite get there. Been given a good break and loved the way he went to the line in a recent Rosehill trial win, beating All Time Legend, who bolted up on Tuesday to frank the form.

Danger

4 Warp Speed (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Star Witness for Team Hawkes that resumes. This gelding had two runs in the Spring to start his career, both at metro level in town and while he didn’t win, he was far from disgraced in each outing. Looked decent enough in a recent Rosehill trial win and stable gets Bowman to steer.

Long Shot

Not sure 3 Oakfield Navajo (Bet Now: $17.00) wins but the colours have had such a good run of things in recent weeks. Ran over this track/distance a tick under two weeks ago where he got a good run in transit and tried hard, but couldn’t quite get there when fifth to Devil Dan. That form looks inferior to some engaged here but hard to ignore these Oakfield horses at the moment, especially at Newcastle.

Race 6. (16:50) Kam-Cool Refrigeration Maiden Plate 1600m

Back Me

13 Reaching (Bet Now: $2.05) looks the second good thing of the meeting. Regally bred filly for Kim Waugh that was scratched from Wednesday to be saved for this. Resumed on the Kenso track and her late splits were outstanding from the back in what was an on pace dominated affair. She’ll love the Newcastle mile, gets three wide cover and finishes over the top.

Danger

5 Lanu Moana (Bet Now: $9.00) is a daughter of Ocean Park that looks above average and will win her share of races. Had good specking when debuting over 1400m here two weeks ago and the market got it right. Had a suck run behind the speed and worked home well to run second to Night Witches. Up to 1600m, enormous upside, she’s hard to beat.

Long Shot

I think back to the mile will suit the Ron Quinton filly 11 Rainy Day (Bet Now: $27.00). Was good over the mile two back before racing over 1800m here last time out where she got back and worked home okay but was never really a winning threat. I like her back to 1600m and if she can sit closer in the run this time around, she’ll take some beating I think.

9 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $5.00) is worth another look. Just had one soft trial leading into the Southern Cross where he looked to travel quite keenly in the run and was there to be a threat 250m out but just whacked away. Seems to be a much better horse on top of the ground and when he has clear air, so if that can eventuate here, think he’s a definite improver.

Danger

3 Special Reward (Bet Now: $3.30) is a former WA sprinter who has done a really good job since joining Kris Lees. Career best win last time out in the Southern Cross at Randwick when afforded a lovely sit just off the speed before peeling wider, letting down strongly and though Cascadian loomed large to beat him, Special Reward showed good ticker to fend him off. Been saved for this race specifically, home track, hard fit, in form, very likeable.

Long Shot

13 Royal Tudor (Bet Now: $46.00) is over a month between runs for Rod Ollerton since scoring a really sharp win over 1400m at Randwick. Got back in the run but had plenty of cover before tracking up beautifully into the race and really, once Clenton pushed the button, it was game over. He’s flying this time in and although this is harder compared to recent runs, he’s measured up at this level previously.

Race 8. (18:05) Simtrack Handicap (64) 1200m

Back Me

6 Islands (Bet Now: $12.00) is just struggling to put a win on the board for Brad Widdup but she hasn’t been far away of late. Latest run came on CC Qualifier Day at Albury when getting a good run in transit just behind the speed before getting the split, dashing, looking home, but was nabbed near the peg by Falling Waters. Not a great deal of confidence, but in her corner.

Danger

10 Snitzinnati (Bet Now: $7.50) is an interesting one. Daughter of Snitzel for Gerald Ryan that was kept pretty safe in betting when resuming over 1000m at Muswellbrook where she was back, wide without cover, yet looked to travel very well before gradually creeping forward and despite the hard run, she finished best. Form out of that maiden has been good and 1200m should be fine.

Long Shot

7 Ellie’s Encore (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Paul Perry trained mare that is on the quick back up after racing on Armidale Cup Day on Sunday in the Newmarket where she was back in the run and never really a winning threat but did male up ground late and wasn’t too bad at all behind a handy one in Heaven’s High. Back on her home track, she’s a knockout chance.
