Saturday racing returns to Canterbury this weekend for a strong nine event card with really good depth right across the nine races. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

[crownbetoffer]

Race One (12:35) : TAB Plate 1100m:

Back Me: 2 Malahat (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Godolphin colt that debuts here off the back of an encouraging second in a Rosehill trial on October 14 where he ran a pretty strong second to Ace High. Breeding suggests he’ll come to hand quickly, and the stable, as always, are having a really good run with their youngsters early on in the season. This isn’t a strong two year old, so I’m happy to be in his corner.
Big Danger: 8 Teaspoon (Bet Now: $4.00) is an Arrowfield daughter of Snitzel that comes here for Michael Freedman off the back of a couple of trials, the latest coming on October 11 at Randwick when second to Champagne Cuddles, who came out and won impressively last Saturday at Rosehill so that form is franked and the first trial has seen the form hold up okay also.
Long Shot: 1 Ipso Facto (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Pierro colt on debut for the Mark Newnham yard. He comes here off the back of two trials, the latest coming last Tuesday at Warwick Farm when running second, beaten under a length in a tidy effort. Probably needs to improve off the trials, but not much to figure prominently.

Race Two (13:10) : Schweppes Handicap (67) 1550m:

Back Me: 1 Chaussure (Bet Now: $1.60) resumed over 1400m at Warwick Farm a tick over two weeks back and despite the maiden field carrying a big of depth, he sat off them and then when Tommy asked for the effort, gee he really extended nicely and only the handy three year olds can win fresh at that trip. Can only see upside with him and he rates highly.
Big Danger: 2 Show ‘Em (Bet Now: $5.00) attempted to lead all the way two back over 1400m at Kembla Grange and just tired late to run third. Josh Parr hopped on and he got the horse to relax out the back in a strongly run race under the lights here and the horse reacted to that racing style, producing a solid finish and being strong to the line. I think he can go right on with it.
Long Shot: 4 Fifty Ways (Bet Now: $16.00) was somewhat of a forgive run when resuming behind Suspenders before pulling up with laceration in the mouth behind Quantrill, who of course franked the form by winning at Canterbury last weekend. Back on her home track and if everything is right with her, she is right in this.

Race Three (13:50) : #theraces Handicap (85) 1100m:

Back Me: 3 Mr Manhattan (Bet Now: $3.20) resumed in a similar race over 1000m at Warwick Farm during the long weekend and he was pretty smart in getting the job done, sitting off speed before Avdulla presented him to the outside and he let down like a nice horse. Has since trialled at that track and looked good to the eye, and the form out of the trial has been franked via stablemate Sugar Ray Leonard.
Big Danger: 2 Sarajevo (Bet Now: $4.80) is the very interesting runner. Former Godolphon galloper that is now with Kris Lees and comes here off the back of a pleasing effort in the Lightning when making ground behind Spieth. That form has been franked via Kaepernick on Cup Day, which is a tick, and first start for the new stable…it might be worth to check the market and see if there is a push.
Long Shot: 4 Painte (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Strada gelding that resumes for Joe Pride. He is a stablemate of Mr Manhattan who hasn’t raced since finishing a close up second over 1200m at Rosehill behind Grande Punto. He has had a couple of quiet trials leading in, but he can sprint well fresh. Don’t be shocked to see him supported in the market and run a beauty.

Race Four (14:30) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1550m:

Back Me: 9 Cliff (Bet Now: $4.20) is a three year old taking on the older horses but it’s hard to ignore what he did to his rivals at maiden level on Queanbeyan Cup Day last time out, leading throughout and bolting up by nearly eight lengths. Looks to map well here, so gate nine is no concern to me, and Kathy O’Hara does ride front runners very well.
Big Danger: 3 Sunny Fame (Bet Now: $3.30) is in the form Matty Dunn stable and comes here off a little three week freshen up since running midfield over the Eagle Farm mile where she was heavily backed. Stable have been near unbeatable when they bring horses to these Highway races with city form. Just needs luck from the tricky gate to prove hard to beat.
Long Shot: 13 Verbal (Bet Now: $19.00) is on the back up after racing last Saturday at Dubbo where she was ridden a treat by Ken Dunbar, sitting off speed before saving ground nearer the inside and bursting through to win. That was her first run in three weeks, and though untried at the trip, I think she will get it and some of her efforts in Canberra have been quite solid.

Race Five (15:10) : Ranvet Handicap (93) 1200m:

Back Me: 6 Snoopy (Bet Now: $3.20) looks one of the better bets on the program. He has been freshened up since running fifth in a barrier trial that was the Cameron Handicap behind Chetwood, who of course went to Caulfield and bolted up. Freshen up looks to have done him the world of good based on a sharp trial win last week where he won by a space and ran time. Brings that here and he just about wins.
Big Danger: 5 Grunderzeit (Bet Now: $4.00) continued his outstanding record at the track here with a strong on speed effort at this track/distance and defying a slight market drifter. Four wins and a second from five outings at Canterbury is a record that is hard to ignore and though not quite as dynamic second up, you just can’t leave him out.
Long Shot: 1 Kuro (Bet Now: $7.00) is the clear watch horse. Very classy galloper for Joe Pride that is well and truly Stakes class. He resumes here after a somewhat frustrating Autumn where he failed to fire, but a couple of recent trials to tune up for his return to racing indicates he is ready to rumble. Weight is the issue, but if he overcomes that, he’ll go close.

Race Six (15:50) : Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1250m:

Back Me: 1 Reincarnate (Bet Now: $2.50) for me here. He was game in defeat two back at Rosehill behind Sir Plush before turning the tables on that runner at Randwick where Tim Clark absolutely crawled them in front and gave nothing else a chance, leading throughout and bolting up. I think he will cop pressure here in front but his record at Canterbury is very good, he’s hard fit and in super form. One of the hardest to beat.
Big Danger: 5 Sir Plush (Bet Now: $2.70) had good market support to win that Rosehill race fresh before going to Randwick and really, given the race was run, he had no chance to run down Reincarnate, but he stuck on pretty well to run second. Third up now, so he should be ready fitness wise and there is a little weight pull in his advantage over Reincarnate. Just needs a bit of luck in running to go close to turning the tables.
Long Shot: 8 Well Hardley Ever (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented yet frustrating gelding that resumes for Clarry Conners. He was a real mixed back in the latter part of the Autumn/early Winter, running early on in the prep before tailing away towards the end and I think that is the key to him-fresh. Trials indicate that, and I think if you are going to back him, it will be now and next start. Massive chance

Race Seven (16:40) : Ashbury Handicap 1550m:

Back Me: 4 Religify, (Bet Now: $1.80) I thought, was going to Hawkesbury so I didn’t really include him, but he is running here, he looks the bet of the day. Did an enormous job in defeat last time out at Randwick where he sat outside a hot speed yet fought on very well when a narrow second to Rock Forthe Ladies. Looks the sole leader here, and a dry track at Canterbury with the rail true means leaders will be hard to run down.
Big Danger: 5 Gods In Him (Bet Now: $5.00) for me to bounce back. Not sure what happened at Randwick first up but he was just awful behind Thunder Fantasy, sitting back and not coming on at all. He has since bolted up in a Rosehill trial last week, so I am keen on him to bounce back here.
Long Shot: I think 7 Dylan’s Rojo (Bet Now: $21.00) could be an improver here. I am not sure what happened at Taree last time out other than the fact they did go hard in front and he was asked to carry 60.5kg. Tumbles down to the minimum now, maps well and has a very good record at Canterbury. Willing to give him another chance.

Race Eight (17:25) : McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (78) 1900m:

Back Me: 3 Eschiele (Bet Now: $4.80) looks the way to go here. Didn’t mind his effort a fortnight back over the mile at Randwick when making up ground late in the piece behind impressive winner More To Gain. Go back to the Winter and he performed very well in the Queensland Derby series, two efforts behind the subsequent Group l placed Mackintosh. That looks the right form for this race.
Big Danger: 2 My Giuliano (Bet Now: $4.20) ran in a Chris Waller handicap at Randwick last time out and the genuine tempo suited this mare as she sat off speed and when presented by Josh Parr, she let down strongly to score a narrow but decisive victory. She has an outstanding record at Canterbury and rates highly to my eye in a tricky race.
Long Shot: 11 High Opinion (Bet Now: $9.00) got a long way back in the run when racing over the Warwick Farm mile last time out and he just couldn’t make up the required ground behind New Tipperary, who franked the form by winning at Rosehill last Saturday and is being touted as a Sydney Cup horse. That form reads well and this horse will love the step up in trip.

Race Nine (18:05) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (77) 1100m:

Back Me: 12 Infra Dig (Bet Now: $4.80) produced a lovely finish to get the job done first up at Gosford before going to Warwick Farm where she had the case of the second up syndrome behind impressive winner Diddums. Third up now, so she should be ready fitness wise and the form around her from last prep just reads so well for a race of this quality.
Big Danger: 6 Rose Of Man (Bet Now: $4.80) ran over 1000m at Randwick a fortnight back and she had to cut back to the inside which wasn’t the best ground when third to the potential Stakes class mare Nieta. She runs very well at Canterbury, and with a likely genuine tempo here, she can sit back and ambush late.
Long Shot: 3 Allez Chival (Bet Now: $12.00) has been given a two month break since racing over this track/distance where she copped serious heat near the speed with a big weight and dropped out behind Burradoo. The claim for Heywood helps, she does tend to race well here, and her best racing is when she is produced fresh. Market watch.
