The Summer Carnival really heats up at Ascot this Saturday where it is Lee Steere Stakes Day, featuring the WA debut of New Zealands best horse, Kawi. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (15:15) : Lavazza Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Sweet Ora (Bet Now: $1.50) is a talented filly for the Durrant/Miller yard who is on the back up after racing last Saturday here where she took a little while to wind up and find her feet but once she balanced up, she attacked the line. No issue with the seven day turnaround and rates highly.
Big Danger: 2 Stored Energy (Bet Now: $13.00) is a talented type that resumes after a very good opening prep in the latter part of the Autumn with some races behind quality animals such as Whispering Brook. Not much to go on trial wise, but has class and quality.
Roughie: 4 Diamond Princess (Bet Now: $21.00) ran behind Sweet Ora in that race mentioned above and to the eye she was pretty plain but I think she just did a bit too much work on speed. Senior rider takes over now and she does map well here in the small field. Doubt she can win, but I think she’ll finish closer to Sweet Ora than last time out.
Race Two (16:00) : Champion Fillies Day Handicap (72+) 2150m:
Back Me: 7 The Forgotten One (Bet Now: $5.00) took an eternity to breakthrough for a win, but it finally happened over 1800m last time out where he got back in the run and finished off with purpose late to score a narrow but decisive victory. Now that he has got the win under the belt, I think he can go right on with it.
Big Danger: 6 Proxy (Bet Now: $4.00) has been given a three week freshen up since racing over 1800m where he sat back in the run and closed off okay late in the piece behind Bollywood Blitz. Better suite up in trip to my eye and he should have a bit of upside left in the tank.
Long Shot: 5 Fulgur (Bet Now: $34.00) is the wed fit horse who could knock these out. He ran over 2200m here a fortnight ago and stuck on really well nearer the inside when third to Already Famous. Moses was still alive when he last won, but this isn’t a strong race and he is slowly starting to find some form.
Race Three (16:45) : Perthracing.com.au Handicap (1MW) 1200m:
Back Me: Key runners here come through the More Aces and the best run of the race was 3 Astronomite (Bet Now: $2.10), who will go around odds as he did that day when he sat off a very slow speed, and given he was first up with bigeye fish to fry, he couldn’t sprint sharply enough. Looks a more genuine tempo here, so I am happy to be on him.
Big Danger: 9 River Dance (Bet Now: $4.600) ran third in the More Aces where he had late market support and ran up to that, sticking on well and not beaten far. Probably needs to improve off that because he won’t get the luxuries that was afforded to him that afternoon, but he is still a place chance.
Roughie: 1 Travellin (Bet Now: $12.00) ran over 1000m here a fortnight back where he sat back in the run and he just couldn’t sprint well enough in the run home. Back up to 1200m will really suit. Not sure he can win, but is a must for exotics.
Race Four (17:30) : James Boags Premium Handicap (1MW) 1800m:
Back Me: 6 Someday Oneday (Bet Now: $2.70) is on the back up after racing over 1500m here last Saturday where he got back in the run and closed off hard late in the piece when a close up second to Push To Pass. I think rising to 1800m will suit and the seven day turnaround will improve.
Big Danger: 2 Magic Rocket (Bet Now: $4.20) ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he sat off them in the run and chased hard down the entire straight but was just no match late for The Forgotten One. That hard outing should toughen him right up for this assignment. One of the hardest to beat.
Long Shot: 1 Confusing (Bet Now: $26.00) is on the back up after racing over the mile last Saturday where he was just outsprinted and outclassed behind Scales Of Justice. Up in trip will suit and this is a massive drop in grade. Sharp improver.
Race Five (18:10) : Amelia Park Handicap (72+) 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Gigante (Bet Now: $4.40) ran over this track/distance three weeks back in a hot race where he sat off speed and chased hard all the way down the straight when a close up second to Cool Passion. Gets the weight relief after the claim, hard fit in form and should take some beating.
Big Danger: 6 Furious Dame (Bet Now: $4.00) is a nippy customer who comes through that race King River contested where she sat on speed and fought on pretty well late behind Benito. She will be in front for a long way. Last 100m will test but she may hold on.
Long Shot: Race falls away after this pair. 3 Sireeze (Bet Now: $17.00) is a handy type that resumes here after a pretty solid Summer last season, which ended with a closing midfield finish in the Pinjarra Classic behind First Among Equals, who has gone on to really good things since. No trials, but sprints well fresh and has a very good record at the track.
Race Six (18:50) : WAROA Lee Steere Stakes 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Kawi (Bet Now: $3.60) is the best horse that New Zealand has to offer so it is a real feather in the cap for Perth racing that they got him. He was the star of the show during the Carnival across the Tasman, and his last start win in the Windsor Park was huge given he was wide no cover on a day when making ground was hard. If he brings his best, he probably wins.
Big Danger: 4 Lite’n In My Veins (Bet Now: $5.50) is being touted as the next great hope for Perth racing in terms of being capable of mixing it with the best in the east and he is building a record to suggest he could. Showed tremendous fight to win the Northerly last time out, sitting off speed and chasing hard, then fending off rivals in the final 100m. He is a star and is the pick of the locals. He bumps into New Zealands best though.
Long Shot: 1 Pornichet (Bet Now: $81.00) made his WA debut behind Lite’n In My Veins in the Northerly where he was ridden up on the speed and he dropped out of the race late. I think he is much better when ridden with a sit so I think if that eventuates here, he can bounce back.
Race Seven (19:30) : Fairetha Stakes 1400m:
Back Me: 11 Final Salute (Bet Now: $18.00) did a very good job when resuming at Northam in a maiden befriend racing over 1500m here and working home with real purpose late in the piece behind Swedish Memories. Third up now, so he should be ready fitness wise and in the right stable.
Big Danger: 9 Lusaha (Bet Now: $17.00) looks a real up and coming type for the Dan Morton yard. He ran over 1200m last Wednesday at the track and was made to work for it. He was under pressure before the turn but once he balanced up, he really attacked the line and scored an impressive win. Up in trip is no issue, getting fitter and in form.
Roughie: 1 The River (Bet Now: $34.00) comes through the Belgravia (1200m) where he had market support at odds but again was quite disappointing in the straight. He was one of the better youngsters last season, so any inkling of that here and he is right in the game I think.
Race Eight (20:05) : Glenroy Chaff Handicap (66+) 1400m:
Back Me: Going to give 3 Antique Dream (Bet Now: $9.00) another look here. She was very promising around this time last year, winning several races on the bounce before being tipped out. Has had two runs this time in and for the most part, she has been a bit disappointing. Third up now, so she should be ready fitness wise and Pike is on.
Big Danger: 7 Cronkite (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the main threat. This gelding is low flying at the moment for the Williams stable, winning thre of three this prep and on each occasion she has been dynamic. Draws awkwardly here which is a concern, but I’ll leave that in the capable hands of Glenn Smith.
Long Shot: 12 Mosseratti (Bet Now: $19.00) trialled well behind Astronomite before resuming at Geraldton where he got way too far back in the run and perhaps was ridden a touch arrogantly. He is much better than that, and I am not ignoring the trial after one run. He goes in multiples.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 2 Kawi
NEXT BEST: Race Three Number 3 Astronomite
VALUE: Race Eight Number 3 Anitque Dream
