Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:48) Tab Long May We Play (75) 1200m
5 Golden Mean (Bet Now: $1.90) is one of many already this season for David Vandyke who resumed with a win. This mare resumed at Ipswich when a heavily backed odds on pop and if you were on, it was a pretty painless watch, with the daughter of Congrats being far too good. She’s been a dynamite fresh, with all four wins coming first up, so that’s the query heading into this, but ability wise, she’s the best horse in the race.
2 No Doubt Acracker (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the seven day back up for the Stuart Kendrick team after racing over 1200m last Saturday at Eagle Farm when back near last in the run before getting into clear air and finishing off strongly when a close up third to Ziemba. If this was 1350m, would declare her. Just a query remaining at 1200m.
Fascinating runner is 3 Island Daze (Bet Now: $3.60), a former Grahame Begg mare that is now with John Smerdon. When trained in Victoria, she trialled like a star, but when it came to race day, for the most part, she raced like a donkey, so very interesting she’s now with Smerdon, and he does have a good record with tried horses, so watch the market.
Race 2. (12:23) Brc like Nowhere Else Hcp 1600m
4 Miss Cabaret (Bet Now: $3.40) looks a smart type and confident she can measure up to Saturday level. Heavily backed when debuting over 1400m two weeks ago at the Gold Coast in a Benchmark 3YO race and despite racing greenly in the straight, she finished off with purpose and was too good. Off that, eats up the mile and has more upside than most.
1 Magic Conqueror (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the seven day back up for the Kelly Schweida stable after racing over 1400m last Saturday at the Gold Coast when back in the small field and had to produce a strong finale to win, but that he did and was impressive. 1600m should be fine for him and overall, this race is lacking depth.
5 Petunia (Bet Now: $8.00) is crying out for the mile and she gets it here. Kelly Schweida trained filly that has had a few runs now at 1350m, the latest coming last Thursday at Ipswich when back and closing off very well late behind Scottish Mist. She’s racing as if the 1600m will be ideal for her and hopefully she’ll be strong late.
Race 3. (12:58) Mount Franklin Plate (c3) 1350m
7 Maddi Rocks (Bet Now: $1.50) looks the pony to bet on. Chris Waller trained mare who was absolutely luckless at Eagle Farm two back when resuming. Then went to Ipswich where she was absolutely bolting for a run. Just a matter of getting clear air, which is what she got and away she went. She’s quality and looks one of the hardest to beat, another that likes firm ground.
3 Metamorphic (Bet Now: $11.00) has returned in good order for Kelly Schweida. Both runs have come at Doomben and each time he has found the line pretty well, the latest coming last Wednesday here at this trip when a closing third to Superbowl Sunday. If he can take advantage of gate one, think he will be dangerous.
Chris Munce has got 9 Lady Brahmos (Bet Now: $5.00) going super at her past couple. Gave them a spanking to win at Ipswich two back then proved it was no fluke with a strong third behind Amiche over 1200m here a fortnight back, held but far from disgraced in defeat. She’s going well and can win without surprising.
Race 4. (13:33) Xxxx Dry (rs1mw) 1350m
4 Run For Glory (Bet Now: $1.70) is racing in super form at the moment for the Gollan camp. Loved the way he knuckled Down to win here two weeks ago. Was there to be run down but he showed good ticker when required to win. Harder here, but think he can measure up to them.
5 See Me Exceed (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Price/Kent trained mare that looked the good thing of good things when she resumed over 1400m at the Gold Coast, heavily backed into odds on and she duly saluted under a confident steer from Pengelly. Is a second up winner and looks to find another very winnable race. Hard to beat.
6 Tycoon Street (Bet Now: $16.00) can be dangerous here at odds. Kris Lees trained mare that produced a brilliant finale to win first up at the Gold Coast before going to Eagle Farm three weeks ago where she ran well but bumped into She Za Boss, who looked like Winx when bolting up to win. Third up bounce back is on the cards.
Race 5. (14:08) Cascade Hcp (c6) 1600m
If you can trust the first up, 2 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $5.50) is the pony to bet on. Was really disappointing in three runs during the Winter Carnival and was tipped out. Resumed over 1350m here two weeks ago and I loved the way he found the line late behind Phantom Falcon. Fitter and up to the mile, hard to beat.
3 Cloak (Bet Now: $1.80) has done nothing wrong since joining the David Vandyke camp, winning 3/3, the latest of those wins coming four weeks ago at this track/distance when leading throughout and proving too classy for his rivals. Tick over trial was good, and though this is hardest test this prep, he can win for sure.
Convinced that 4 Alpine Dancer (Bet Now: $10.00) is working up to something positive. He’s parading better and better with each run and I thought there were signs a win isn’t far off in the Aqua Vite race from a fortnight back. He was going nowhere for a few strides, but picked up and I loved the way he found the line late. Hard to beat if he brings anything near his best.
Race 6. (14:43) Millers Swim School Qlty 1200m
6 Malahide (Bet Now: $2.15) does seem to be a mare best suited when racing with fresh legs so with that in mind, going her way. Michael Costa trained mare that hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Mares race when a close up fifth to Invincibella in a very good effort. Been given a good long break and looks to find a winnable race to resume in.
7 The Great Boombino (Bet Now: $12.00) is a beauty for Craig Cousins. This mare puts herself on speed, gives her all and tries very hard, which was the case over 1110m here a few weeks ago when leading and giving a really good kick, only to be nabbed right on the peg by Say Haya. Should land near the front again and prove hard to run down.
Did they figure out something with 5 Spirit’s Choice (Bet Now: $15.00) two weeks ago over 1110m here? She was last in the run, totally against her normal pattern of ripping and tearing in front and fading late. She was ridden cold and found the line pretty well I thought Just Orm. Up to 1200m I like and we know at her best she can beat these.
Race 7. (15:22) The Village Kitchen Ascot (72) 1600m
10 Prospectus (Bet Now: $2.90) is building up a good record for the Chris Waller and should take some beating here. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday when well backed late and in a driving finish, the gelding surged hard late to get the job done. Wasn’t far off a Saturday win two back but gets a golden chance here.
8 Getyourgreyon (Bet Now: $2.35) is a little query at 1600m but has to be given another chance after the run he copped over 1350m here two weeks ago. Was four wide for the trip under what was an ordinary steer from Jimmy Orman. The horse still had the hide to still hit the line, only tiring the last 50m. Jag is back on and if he can get cover from the gate, one of the hardest to beat.
3 Superbowl Sunday (Bet Now: $7.50) has returned in really good order for the Chris Munce stable, winning two of three. Latest of those wins came last Wednesday over 1350m here when leading throughout and I thought the ride from Larry was a beauty in front, controlling things to suit himself and kicking on strongly. 1600m should be fine and confidence is up.
Race 8. (16:02) Tab Long May We Play Hcp 1050m
This looks such good placement by Team Snowden with 15 Strike (Bet Now: $7.50). Talented colt that produced his best when in Queensland, winning on debut at Eagle Farm. This guy resumed at Canterbury where the market said he had three legs and while he didn’t run that poorly, he was still beaten, but I do like Jim Byrne back on and Blinkers back on.
6 Shooting For Gold (Bet Now: $3.30) is a progressive three year old for Steve O’Dea that debuted with a close up second at the Gold Coast before racing over 1110m here last Wednesday when backed as if he was Winx and duly saluted, bolting up as a short priced elect. Slightly back in trip is interesting, but he’s a Saturday class horse for sure.
Giving respect to 3 Mishani Miss (Bet Now: $2.15) for the Les Ross team. Gave them a spanking over 1000m at Eagle Farm two back before stepping up to 1200m three weeks ago and worked home well, but was clearly no match for a really good filly, and the only horse to beat Rothfire, Kisukano. That form is A1 for this race, so she’s hard to beat.
Race 9. (16:38) Brc Spring Carn. On Sale (75) 1200m
2 Snowzone (Bet Now: $4.80) has been up a little while for Kris Lees but continues to hold his form really well. This gelding ran over the 1350m here two weeks ago when near the speed throughout and was there to win, but I just think the trip sees him out when a close up third to Phantom Falcon. Back to 1200m, he’ll take some beating.
6 Royal Hale (Bet Now: $3.10) is third up now for the Tony Gollan camp and should be close to peak fitness. Just looked in need of the run fresh behind Aheadofhistime before going to 1200m at the Sunny Coast where he sat off a good speed and finished best under Ryan Maloney. Confidence is up, he can go on with it.
8 Starvirgo (Bet Now: $13.00) is a son of Zoustar for the Rob Heathcoate stable that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since May 15 at the Sunny Coast when leading and tiring late when fourth to Jeweliana. Trialled well here a couple of weeks ago…will be interesting to see how they ride him, because he has showed he can take a sit, while other times, he can run along in front.
