5/4/2021 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben, Easter Monday Races

Easter Monday racing in Brisbane heads to Doomben for an eight race program. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

1600m+ maiden races in general are bludgers but north of the Tweed and they are proper bludgers. This is no exception. There is a big but coming though. As a whole, it’s a nothing race, BUT there is a standout in 3 I Am A Beauty (Bet Now: $2.20), who only just has to hold his form to be winning. He was a real eye catcher two back over 1400m at Grafton before going to the mile at Eagle Farm just over two weeks ago and was very good late, closing off strongly to run third. Just has to hold up from gate one, clear air and he’ll be winning.

2 Isabella’s Spring (Bet Now: $2.20) is racing well. Just finding it hard to break the maiden tag. She ran over this track/distance last time out where I thought Chau rode a peach race on the mare. She was there to win but just couldn’t finish it off when second to Deep Sceiva. Bursting to win a maiden and she gets a great chance yet again.

5 Angelic Archer (Bet Now: $8.00) is on the back up for Trevor Thomas after racing here on Wednesday. She was 1600m back to 1350m when just off the speed and battled on pretty well behind impressive winner She’s At Regatta. Back up in trip with Fradd steering, she’s a leading contender behind I Am A Beauty.

5 Alert And Ready (Bet Now: $2.60) has the potential to be a Saturday class horse. She has shown enough in her career to date to suggest she has that sort of talent. With that in mind, she’d want to be winning this. Didn’t handle the wet track in the 2YO Jewel at the Gold Coast but was far from disgraced in defeat. Tick over trial was a very sharp piece of work and clearly the one to beat.

12 Apple Tart (Bet Now: $2.00) can be a definite improver here. She resumed on her home track at the Sunny Coast and failed to fire after getting a reasonable run in transit. Market didn’t want a bar of her late, so that was telling. Rodd jumps on and Blinkers on first time, from the inside gate, the set up is there to bounce back.

Of the other two runners, the one bred to handle the wet better is 2 Crack Of Doom (Bet Now: $6.00) being by Domesday out of a Kempinsky mare. His two runs back from a break have been pretty good, both over the short course of 800m and 1000m respectively. Harder here, but the small field helps.

4 Brandwood (Bet Now: $2.05) has the recent Doomben wet track form, so I’ll lean his way. Debuted over 1200m here and he took a while to get into his work, but he found when required and surged hard late to win. How strong is the form? I don’t think it is overly strong, but in the right camp and finds a winnable race with a few of these having eyes on bigger prizes.

7 Howdy Angel (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Tony Gollan trained filly that has been given a mini freshen up. Several weeks between runs since bolting up over the mile at the Sunny Coast. I reckon she has been freshened up with the Queensland Oaks in mind, so keen to see how she goes back to 1350m.

6 Fortified (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Ocean Park for Chris Waller that is in a similar boat to Howdy Angel, with eyes on a Derby. He resumes after a strong opening prep in the Summer, winning on debut at the Gold Coast before a solid effort here. Trialled well and while better over further, he’ll be strong late.

David Vandyke is the in form trainer in Australia and when his runners have 3-4 weeks break between runs, it’s pretty much an ATM. He has 11 Still Reigning (Bet Now: $3.60) engaged and I think she can get the job done. Resumed several weeks ago on her home track at the Sunny Coast and while she didn’t beat much, gee she was dominant in the run to the line. Confident she can measure up.

1 All To Do (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Stuart Kendrick trained galloper that resumes. Hasn’t raced since December 18 on his home track at the Sunny Coast when attempting to lead throughout. Looked home but was nabbed late. Resumes without a trial, but draws soft and generally sprints well fresh.

7 The Diamond (Bet Now: $8.50) is a stablemate of All Too Do and is also resuming. His last run came over 1000m at the Sunny Coast where he was well supported in the field of five but didn’t fire a shot and only beat one home in a plain effort. Quiet trial to get ready, so watch the market with him.

1 Chevychaser (Bet Now: $4.50) has the right form to win this I feel. First two runs back from a break came on testing ground here and while he didn’t threaten, he made ground each time and was quite good. Last run at Eagle Farm, he didn’t fire but some horses are like that on that track. He can bounce back.

2 Northern Woods (Bet Now: $2.70) is a key threat. This four year old has done a pretty good job since joining the Chris Munce camp. Ran over 1800m at the Sunny Coast last time out. Tried hard from near the speed, just no match for Top Order. Better suited back in trip and handles wet ground.

8 Sino Defeat (Bet Now: $7.50) can sneak a first four spot. Paul Butterworth trained gelding that ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time out. Liked the way he found the line albeit was comfortably held near the line by Karaka Lad, who looks very progressive. Wendy Peel is riding very well at the moment and her 3kg claim helps.

Another Vandyke runner with a break between runs here is 11 Orbisyn (Bet Now: $1.40) and he does look above average. Debuted over 1110m here where he was on speed throughout before Maloney clicked him up at the top of the straight and he gapped them. Market loved him and I dare say they will love him again. I do.

3 Rock Amore (Bet Now: $3.70) is an interesting runner. Formerly with the WaterBott camp, he now finds himself with Tony Gollan. His overall form in NSW reads okay, but okay for 1200m is a different story. No public trials, so a bit of guessing involved, but his lone career win came on a heavy track.

8 Keep On Loving You (Bet Now: $14.00) is an honest customer for Paul Nolan Jnr that is racing well at the moment without winning. Ran on his home track at Toowoomba last time out when on speed. Les Tilley booted for home on him and he looked the winner for a few strides, but had to settle for a second to Maddiara. That reads okay for a race like this.

I’ll take a chance with 2 Rhyme Time (Bet Now: $3.50). No idea what to do with him but just have to trust what he produced fresh at Toowoomba. Market didn’t want a bar of him ($3.2-$4.8) but he landed in a plum spot from the gate and once he got clear air, away he went and he was dominant. Staying at 1200m is interesting but likes wet ground and gets run of the race stuff from the draw.

8 Enterprise Keren (Bet Now: $4.40) is racing well for Mick Lakey. Thought she was going to win last time out at the Sunny Coast. Was there to put them away but just lacked the killer blow to finish the job and had to settle for a close up third. Should get a lovely run from the gate and the claim for Huxtable helps.

5 Daring Belle (Bet Now: $7.00) was scratched from Saturday to be saved for this. She ran last Saturday at Doomben where she was back in the run and never really a winning factor, but did make up ground and was pretty good late the piece I thought. Likes wet ground and the claim will ensure she could roll forward and give them something to chase.

8 Amicitia (Bet Now: $4.00) is sneaky going well I reckon. Tony Gollan trained mare that caught the eye fresh at the Sunny Coast. She then went to the Gold Coast a few weeks ago where she was seemingly not handling the bog but picked up and I thought she was good. Like her up in trip and has upside to come.

4 Dio D’Oro (Bet Now: $4.80) is a swimmer and if the forecast is right, he will get conditions to suit. He ran on the Jewel Day at the Gold Coast on a bottomless track and ran well in a much stronger race, the same race that Amicitia contested above won by Akage. He loves wet ground so has to be respected.

Fitter and up in trip are two big ticks for 7 Westlink (Bet Now: $7.00). He resumed over 1200m at Eagle Farm in what was an on pace dominated affair. He was back in the run and never really a winning threat, but did make up ground in a good effort. Better suited here and is a knockout chance.
