The Masters at Ascot wraps up this Saturday with the third and final Group l of not just the Carnival but the 2020 calendar year, the Kingston Town Classic (1800m), the drawcard. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Kingston Town Classic 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Kingston Town Classic
Race 1. (15:19) Tourism WA Trophy 1000m
1 Destructor (Bet Now: $8.50) for me in the opener. Son of Demerit on debut for Neville Parnham off the back of two trials, the latest seeing him win over 1000m at Belmont in pretty solid time for the juveniles that morning. Stable should always be respected with their youngsters and he has a good gate to use for start one.
6 Flying Missile (Bet Now: $4.80) will lead these up and look the winner for a long way. Debuted in the Crystal Slipper where she attempted to lead throughout and she gave a good kick. Just felt the pinch late when third to impressive winner Heavenly Waters. Back to 1000m with the run under the belt, she’s hard to beeat.
7 Pixie Chix (Bet Now: $26.00) is a David Harrison trained filly on debut. This girl has had two trials to get ready for start one, the latest seeing her place over 950m at Lark Hill where she looked to go about her business well enough in reasonable time. Is bred to come to hand early and is well related, so watch the market.
Race 2. (15:59) Crown Perth Handicap (1MW) 1600m
Pretty keen here on the three year old 11 Bragwell (Bet Now: $2.60). He drops a fair bit in grade/depth after racing in the WA Guineas two weeks ago where he was a real eye catcher from the back behind stablemate Watch Me Dance, who goes around as a leading chance for the Kingston Town. Drops to a 1MW race here and from the gate, can sit much closer in the run and prove very hard to beat.
6 Butterlea Lad (Bet Now: $23.00) is a beauty that will put himself near the speed and try hard, which is what he did two weeks ago here in a 66+ race and battled away really well in defeat behind Red Publisher. Looks well suited back to this level and if he can overcome the tricky draw, he’s a leading contender.
7 Mr Mt Walker (Bet Now: $27.00) rises a bit in grade/depth but is racing well for the Steve Wolfe team. Resumed with a close up fourth at Mount Barker before going to Albany where he had to lump the big weight but despite that, he finished best and was too good for his rivals. Did run well in town last prep so he’s capable of running a positive race here.
Race 3. (16:39) Tabtouch Handicap (72+) 1100m
Back to a fast run 1100m I do like for 5 Long Beach (Bet Now: $2.70). Was on him when he raced over 1200m two weeks ago here where he was back off a very moderate tempo and he just couldn’t quicken well enough behind Carocapo, who won again last Saturday to tick that form off. Tempo looks more genuine this time around and should prove hard to beat.
6 Plutocracy (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Simon Miller trained gelding that resumes. This son of Sebring hasn’t raced since the Winter when solid in defeat behind the subsequent Group l performed Red Can Man. He does seem a horse best suited with fresh legs and his recent trial was quite good, so keen to see how he goes, especially from the soft draw.
I was really surprised that $20+ was the price for 7 State Attorney (Bet Now: $9.50) when he won here a few weeks ago. His wet track form wasn’t too bad and he had strong form. He produced a strong finale to get up and win at big odds. Won’t be getting those anytime soon I dare say and think he’ll be better suited on firmer footing.
Race 4. (17:19) Amelia Park Handicap (66+) 2200m
Good test here for 1 Midnight Blue (Bet Now: $4.50) but with the claim for a very much in form apprentice, leaning his way. Two weeks between runs since racing here when given a peach steer by Pike just off the speed and once he presented to win, he was strong to the line in winning. Interesting to see if he can progress to the Perth Cup but on current form, he’s the one to beat.
5 Adornment (Bet Now: $4.80) hasn’t won in a while but reckon she’s going well and can take this out for Adam Durrant. Placed behind Midnight Blue two weeks ago where she was tracking the pace and did try hard. Just couldn’t quite quicken in a game effort. Could I back her to win? No, but she’s a key threat regardless.
4 Dark Musket (Bet Now: $91.00) can fill a first four spot here at a decent price. Down the track two back in the Ascot Gold Cup before racing here two weeks back where he was back near last in the run and worked home okay without threatening behind Midnight Blue. Long time between drinks but will be strong at the end.
Race 5. (17:54) Jungle Dawn Classic 1400m
In the corner of 6 Serenity Bay (Bet Now: $5.50) for the Williams camp. Talented mare that resumed in the Carbine Club where she got back to near last in the run and worked home strongly off the speed when beaten narrowly by Neufbosc. Fitter, back to Mares grade with Parnham sticking, she’s the one to beat IMO.
10 Tycoon Storm (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare that comes through the Jungle Mist and she was one of the more unlucky runners in the race. Tucked in behind the speed and just didn’t get clear at the time she wanted to and ended up being an unlucky third. Fitter, up to 1400m, looks one of the hardest to beat.
I’m quite interested in 11 Ration Aly (Bet Now: $14.00) for the David Harrison camp. She was kept pretty safe in betting when racing in the Jungle Mist despite racing well out of her grade. Had her chance but far from disgraced in defeat. Like her up to 1400m and off that effort, she can measure up to this lot for sure.
Race 6. (18:30) Lee Steere Classic 1400m
Think 5 Western Empire (Bet Now: $2.25) can bounce back here and with Pike choosing it over Mystical View is a decent enough lead for me. Comes through the WA Guineas where he got back in the run and did make up ground without threatening. Interesting he comes back to 1400m but tempo should be quite genuine and he will get his chance to finish over the top.
3 If Chantorque (Bet Now: $3.80) can stretch her brilliance to 1400m, think she’s a leading chance against these. Russell Stewart trained filly that is two weeks between runs since taking out the Placid Ark, where she had the suck run behind the speed and used her turn of foot to put them away. The query is 1400m, but she gets a cheap run once again and is hard to beat.
10 Mystical View (Bet Now: $16.00) looks to have her share of talent for the Williams team. Comes through the Placid Ark where she got back in the run and was never really a winning threat. Still, good in defeat behind Chantorque. The rise to 1400m looks ideal for her. Just interesting that Pike chooses Western Empire and not this girl, so watch the market and see what it does.
Race 7. (19:10) AJ Scahill Stakes 1400m
I’m with the mares here, with 9 Flirtini (Bet Now: $5.50) on top. On the quick back up for Simon Miller after racing last Saturday in the Winterbottom, and she was outstanding from the back when fifth to Elite Street. Was good to see her do that because the resumption was plain, albeit on wet ground. Fitter, hard fit now, up to 1400m, think she will take a power of beating.
10 Celebrity Queen (Bet Now: $1.95) is a very good mare for Team Williams. Ran in the Winterbottom last Saturday and the ride from Parnham was an absolute beauty. Trucked through beautifully between runners and burst through, just missing out on picking up Elite Street. 1400m is the query but does get Pike aboard.
1 Kementari… (Bet Now: $6.50) bless him. He has got the bad wraps, but his two WA runs have been quite good, the latest coming in the Railway where he found them a bit too slick but was a definite pass mark I thought behind Inspirational Girl. Like him back to 1400m. Will just need luck in the run from a sticky draw.
Race 8. (19:50) Kingston Town Classic 1800m
Bit surprised that 4 Too Close The Sun (Bet Now: $8.50) is the odds he is. I thought he would be a bit shorter given he is better suited at 1800m than the mile of the Railway from two weeks ago. He ran a career best. Just no match for the brilliance of Pike and Inspirational Girl. If you’re a weights man, this guy has no chance. But, he is better suited up in trip, is a proven weight carrier and will land on speed, rolling and proving hard to run down.
12 Inspirational Girl (Bet Now: $2.50) has taken all before her this time in, graduating from a 66+ race horse to a Group l winner, having taken out the Railway. Given a 12/10 steer by Pike, slicing his way through the field on the mare and she was much too good. Yet to prove herself beyond a mile but is racing like she will eat up 1800m and beyond.
11 Truly Great (Bet Now: $26.00) looks a big improver here up in trip. Impressive winner three back at this track/distance before going to the RJ Peters to get his ticket into the Railway, which he won. Far from disgraced in the Railway but still thought he had his chance. He looks like he’s being targeted towards the Perth Cup and I do think that 2000m+ handicaps is when he’ll come into his own. But still think he’s a must for exotics here.
Race 9. (20:30) Seacorp Handicap (1MW) 1200m
12 Angelic Miss (Bet Now: $4.60) looks a progressive mare for the Simon Miller camp and confident she can measure up to this lot. Tick over two weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when given a perfect steer just off the speed and when she presented, she showed good change up speed and was impressive. Looks hard to beat against this lot.
6 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Zoffany mare for the Williams camp that resumes. This girl had a mixed Winter prep, where she won first up but was disappointing in two subsequent runs. Her best is clearly good enough to beat these and the recent trial was more than encouraging. Watch the market and see what it does with her.
13 Cockyjoy (Bet Now: $19.00) has done little wrong in two runs back from a spell for James Grieve. Solid second to Express Time fresh before racing over 1000m here where she had the suck run behind the speed and proved too good for her rivals. Yet to prove herself at 1200m but is racing like she will handle it this time in. Knockout chance.
