Staying at 1600m is the slight query with 5 Thurmond (Bet Now:  $SP.00) but ability wise, I do think he has a bit on these. Aussie debut came over the mile at Pakenham where he tried hard after getting a suck run in transit and just couldn’t quite get there when a close up third. Natural upside…just wish this was 1800m/2000m. But, even allowing for that query, I do think he has a bit on these.

10 Nordic Belle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) ran fourth in the same maiden that Thurmond contested. She was on debut and seemingly had every chance in transit but just lacked the killer blow to go with them late but she stayed on and was good in defeat. Good upside/improvement and does get B Shinn on.

6 Reach The Peak (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an improving type for Moody/Coleman. He debuted at Donald where he just looked a bit raw and new to the caper but kept finding the line and was quite good in defeat I thought behind My Zephyr. Fitter and up in trip, he commands respect.

3 Friday At Five (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the comfortable leader and with front end control, she’ll take running down. She attempted to lead throughout in the Dunkeld Cup last time and gave a strong kick from the front but couldn’t quite see it through when nabbed late by Rhinoceros. Looks the leader, in well after the claim, hard to beat.

1 Kind Gesture (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the class factor and won’t know herself in a race as weak as this. She ran over 1700m on the course proper here last time and didn’t quite fire behind Ruakaka Raider. Back to this level, hard fit, positive ride, she’s a leading chance.

2 Starspangled Baby (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes back to 1800m after racing over 2040m at The Valley last time out where she got into a decent spot behind the speed but when it came getting to clear air, it just didn’t quite eventuate for her. Gets the claim and back in trip is a positive. A win wouldn’t shock.

1 Inexorable (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the one. He ran last Thursday over the mile where he got into a decent spot off the speed before making his run and he tried hard but was no match late for a strong three year old, Lario. Like him slightly back in trip, he drops miles in grade/depth…just has to overcome the gate and he’ll be too good.

9 Ourania (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is lightly raced and has talent for Team Hope. She resumed at Benalla when well tried late and the bets were landed, giving them a start and a beating in a very sharp display. The rise to 1500m is ideal and she is a recent winner whereas most of these are not coming here in winning form.

2 Chakado (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will welcome the drop back in grade/depth after racing in a strong Class 3 on Cranbourne Cup Day when just off the speed and tried hard but was no match for them late when fifth to Oh Too Good. That form surely has to read well for this.

4 Samangu (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a mare for Grahame Begg that is above average and despite the tricky gate, she’s clearly the one to beat. She resumed over 1200m in a maiden at Ballarat where she landed on speed, comfortably, and it was just a matter of pushing the button. Once Childs pushed the button, away she went and she was arrogant. Confident she can make it 2/2 this prep.

2 Rockabilly Rebel (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Team Payne trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Sep 24 when ending the campaign on a high, winning at Swan Hill in a good effort from off the speed. Likely spots them a start but should be strong at the end.

1 Korobeiniki (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is dangerous if she’s within range. She got too far out of her ground at Pakenham last time and while she was never a winning threat, she did make up good headway to finish fifth, beaten 4.5L. She’ll get back but with a drag into the race, she’s a sneaky chance at odds.

2 Rockabottle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the way I am leaning in what looks a tricky race. Moody/Coleman trained galloper that resumes after going 2/2 during the Winter, winning fresh at Sale before repeating the dose in style at Pakenham Synthetic. Jumpout work has been encouraging, gets the claim and maps ideally. I think he’s the straight bat play.

1 Intrepid Eagle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes back to 1200m for Team McEvoy after racing over 1350m on Donald Cup Day, chasing strongly from off the speed but found one better in quality mare Flying Fizz. Back to 1200m I think is okay and he is the one with hard fitness under the belt.

4 Where’s Poppy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since Nov 1 when a narrow but strong winner at Kilmore, getting the sweet sit in transit and finished best to win, just. He does tend to race well on the fresh side and has a kind map in his corner.

8 Butternut Princess (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned in really good order for Moody/Coleman. She resumed at Kyneton where she was off the speed before peeling wide to make a sustained run and loomed to win, getting better as the race went on in an impressive win. Good upside/improvement to come and strikes a winnable race in town.

4 Loafer (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a leading contender. She resumed over 1100m at Kyneton where she was a well supported favourite and she didn’t give her supporters too much concern, sitting on speed and she was far too good in a strong display. Good racing style and has upside. Hard to beat.

10 Shadhavar (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell and will press forward you’d assume. They rode with a sit first up and it didn’t quite work out so they rode her with intent last time and she made amends, leading throughout and was quite strong. Harder here, but with her racing style, she’ll give herself every chance.

8 King Of Wessex (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned well and the rise to 1800m is ideal. He resumed over the mile at Bendigo where he got a fair way out of his ground but finished off with purpose in a pretty good return behind Private Jumbo. Fitter and up in trip, B Shinn on, he appeals.

3 Austrata (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is two weeks between runs for Reece Goodwin since racing over this track/distance when off speed and kept chasing but was held on the line when beaten 4.5L by Divine Crown. He has that 1800m run under the belt and and Lane sticks.

6 Purveyor (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Bevan Laming trained gelding that resumes. He is first up, having not raced since July 6 over 2500m at Flemington when down the track behind Steel Run. He is better suited over further but 1800m fresh signals intent and this race has thinned out after scratchings.

4 Navy King (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the straight bat play in the get out. He resumed in the China Bowl at Ararat where he had a beaut run in transit and tried hard but just found one better in handy mare Mawallock. Fitter and up in trip, ideal map, upside…he’s the one to beat.

14 Roadcone (Bet Now:  $SP.00) commands respect. He ran two weeks ago over this track/distance when off the speed and kept chasing in a good effort when a close up third to Dragoon. Gets the senior rider on now, has a kind map to settle much closer, leading contender.

8 Saint Lazare (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has returned well and commands respect as a knockout chance after a win at Kyneton where he got into a nice spot just off the speed before angling wider and let down with purpose late to finish best and win. Gets in well after the claim and maps ideally once again.

NEXT BEST: Race One Number 5 Thurmond

LONG SHOT: Race Eight Number 4 Navy King
