The Parks track at Morphettville is where SA metro racing takes place on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out five metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (11:55) Holdfast Insurance (bm64) 1250m
2 So You Can (Bet Now: $1.75) is a son of So You Think for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable that was well backed when debuting last Wednesday over 1050m at Balaklava and despite sitting back near last off a slow tempo, loved the way he found the line late to just miss out on picking up Alleboom. Fitter and up to 1250m, he’s very likeable.
3 The Krone (Bet Now: $2.25) is a son of Dissident on debut for the McEvoy camp. This guy has had two jumpouts at Flemington to prepare for start one, the latest coming last week on the Synthetic track where he ran second and looked to go about his business pretty well. Overall, this isn’t a strong race, so he doesn’t have to be anything special to take it out.
4 African Awesome (Bet Now: $17.00) will love the extra 200m. He debuted over 1050m at Balaklava last Wednesday and given the slow tempo, he really had no chance of figuring in the finish, but liked the way he finished his race off. Being by Fiorente, he’ll want further than 1250m, but the debut was encouraging and this isn’t a strong race overall.
Race 2. (12:31) Winning Edge Presentation-bm72 1400m
4 Flop (Bet Now: $5.00) is very good at around this level and for the first time this prep, she’s been placed in a winnable race. Ran in the Proud Miss two weeks ago at Morphettville and while beaten six lengths, she was far from disgraced in defeat behind Humma Humma. Saves her best for the Parks track and is hard fit now.
They haven’t missed 8 Elusive Nature (Bet Now: $3.20) in early betting. Will Clarken trains this mare, who ran on the course here two weeks ago…well, I say ran, but really, it was a barrier trial. Not sure she should have won, but should have finished much closer, getting badly held up for most of the straight. IMO, she’s too short, but there is question marks on most of these.
1 Pretty Glass (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented mare who is a length or two off her best, but is very capable at this level. Ran at Mount Gambier last time out where she was off the bit a fair way out but stayed on and surged late to get close to beating Canny Move. She’s a borderline Stakes class mare when right, so giving her respect.
Race 3. (13:06) M&j Chickens (bm68) 1950m
Looks an ideal race for the Grant Young trained 9 Exalted Ambition (Bet Now: $4.50). They tested him out in the Derby and was outclassed. A more realistic race was last start in a Benchmark 60 at Strathalbyn and the margin flattered his rivals because he was held up until late before eventually getting clear and his class kicked in. Back in trip a slight query, but this isn’t a strong race.
10 Monteferrante (Bet Now: $5.50) (Accepted Wednesday) is a lightly raced daughter of Pierro for Team McEvoy that’s racing well. Maiden winner first up over 1400m here before placing at Balaklava. Then went to Morphettville three weeks ago where she was held up at a vital stage and to me she seems a bit one paced, so losing momentum cost her some ground when fifth to Bajan. Ran on Wednesday at Strathalbyn and liked the way she closed off nearer the inside when second to A Knight In Paris. Hard fit and is a leading chance.
3 Turf Man (Bet Now: $10.00) is a John Hickmott trained stayer that’s going well. Ran over 2000m on the course proper here two weeks ago where I think he found the class a bit rich but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Busker’s Ballad. This looks more his level and should prove hard to beat…does he want 2200m and not come back to 1950m?
Race 4. (13:46) Adelaide Galvanising (bm68) 1000m
Leaning the way of 3 Dimaggio (Bet Now: $4.80) for the McEvoy camp. Market said he would get the maiden kill out of the way first up on the Ballarat Synthetic and that he did, albeit a bit too close for comfort for a $1.45 chance. Has always showed promise since his 2YO days and like the placement from the stable here in what is a winnable race.
11 Glory Game (Bet Now: $7.50) has done nothing wrong in two runs back from a break for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable. Gave them a pasting first up at Balaklava to break the maiden tag in what has turned out to be a pretty strong race. Then went around at this track/distance three weeks ago and was one of the major victims of the riderless horse, and could make a case that she should have won, albeit the eventual winner was badly hampered too. Hard to beat.
5 Larkham… (Bet Now: $10.00) he must be showing something at home to keep racing him this prep because to me, he seems a horse that wants the spelling paddock. Comes through the Dixon Street race from three weeks ago here when near the speed and battled away despite having every chance. Jump and run set up for him, can win.
Race 5. (14:21) Tab (bm68) 1300m
6 Dixon Street (Bet Now: $2.45) looks to have her fair share of talent for the McEvoy camp. Impressive first up winner at Gawler before racing over 1000m here three weeks ago where she was a major victim of the riderless horse and was almost going to be a good thing beaten, but she got clear from that horse and surged hard the last couple of strides to win. Very promising and confident she goes close again.
Good little test here for 7 Cupid’s Bow (Bet Now: $4.50) but confident she can measure up. Resumed over 1100m at Kilmore against the older horses and while she wasn’t entirely happy on that tricky track, her class came to the fore and she was much too good for them before going to Sandown last time out when back and working home okay without threatening. Clearly a harder assignment here, but she’s got upside and in the right stable.
Fitter and back on firmer footing, want to give 8 Francisca (Bet Now: $16.00) another chance. Had jumped out well prior to racing last Saturday at Murray Bridge where she was wide no cover for the trip and on testing ground, she failed to fire a shot. Draws much better this time around and is better suited on top of the ground.
Race 6. (15:01) Aami (bm64) 1550m
2 Blow Torch (Bet Now: $3.80) is starting to find some good form for the McEvoy stable. Ran over 1400m at Murray Bridge last Saturday and really liked the way he found the line late after getting held up early on in the straight when a close up second to the well performed filly Done By Me. Draws wide, but has now found form and up to 1550m is a big tick.
7 Exalted Dee (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Grant Young trained mare that is on the quick back up after racing at Murray Bridge last Saturday over the mile when coming back in trip and found the line okay behind Coolth, then was close up at Strathalbyn on Wednesday, but to me she is a mare who is more effective on dry ground so hopefully the weather gods are kind for her, and around this trip suits.
8 Predicts (Bet Now: $27.00) certainly has the engine under the hood to take this out, but she’s got a few loose screws upstairs. That was clearly evident at Strathalbyn last time out over 1350m. She looked completely drunk under pressure and Stubby couldn’t get stuck into her at all, with the filly wanting to lay in. Can win, but needs better racing manners.
Race 7. (15:41) Adelaide Appeals Comm. (rs2ly) 1000m
1 Terbium (Bet Now: $5.00) has been somewhat disappointing this time in but I think you have to give him one more chance. Ran over 1200m at Morphettville three weeks back where he wasn’t able to take advantage of the inside gate and got a pair or two further back than what Crowther would have liked and the race was just a mess, won by Miss Mandito. If he brings his best, he’ll win. Been a while since he has produced that.
3 Equal Love (Bet Now: $3.30) is a stablemate of Terbium that comes back from Stakes grade after contesting the Proud Miss two weeks ago when kicking up to hold a forward spot and was outclassed late behind Humma Humma. I doubt she’ll hand up from gate one over 1000m. If there is any petrol in the tank, she’ll take some beating.
8 White Kaps (Bet Now: $12.00) can be a tricky horse to catch but is certainly capable at his best. Comes through the Star Hills race from two weeks ago where he was back off the speed and worked to the line pretty well without really threatening, finishing fourth, beaten 2.6L. Good record on the Parks track and stable is flying.
Race 8. (16:21) Furphy Hcp (58) 1250m
5 Pale Ale (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Danielle Wilson trained grey who can bob up from time to time. Ran over 1200m at Murray Bridge a few weeks ago and worked home pretty well without threatening when third to Gringzinger Express, beaten just over two lengths. Good record on the Parks track and with the gate/claim, he’ll run a positive race.
8 Nordic Pride (Bet Now: $9.00) has his share of talent it seems for David Jolly and not easy to go Maiden to 58 grade, but think he can handle it. Gee it was a big win to break the maiden tag at Gawler last time. Was spotting them a decent start in the run but came with a brilliant finale from the back to get up and win. Heading in the right direction and has more upside than most.
10 God’s Penny… (Bet Now: $7.00) gee he’s promised so much but has let punters down time and time again. He hasn’t raced since May 6 over 1000m at Murray Bridge when seemingly getting every chance behind Mrs Hyde, who dominated from the front, but God’s Penny failed to fire. He’s got the ability to win, so giving him one more chance.
Race 9. (17:00) South Beef (bm58) 1000m
1 Appalachian (Bet Now: $3.10) is a David Jolly trained sprinter who certainly has the talent to go close. First two runs this time in saw him pretty much go around like they were barrier trials. Then had a sharp jumpout prior to racing at Morphettville when heavily backed but he failed to come on behind Be My Star. Think this type of race suits and he can bounce back.
13 Almadriva (Bet Now: $3.30) is worth another chance I feel. Gave them a spanking to win first up at Gawler before going to the 1050m on the course proper here three weeks ago where she was heavily backed but I thought she was most disappointing behind Rushwa after getting every chance. She’s better than that last run surely.
9 The Publikin (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Grant Kluske trained mare that’s racing well and got a well deserved second career win last time out at Strathalbyn. Got into a lovely spot just off the speed before getting clear air at the time and for me, it was Gatt that lifted her over the line. Interesting she comes back to 1000m but will be strong late off a good speed.
