It’s the Spring version of ‘Super Saturday’ at Randwick with a bumper nine race card, three of those events at Group l level. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:25) Cleanaway (bm88) 1600m
Think 4 Matowi (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) has come back in good order and can take this out. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where I thought he was the winner 250m out when he loomed, but his condition just gave out late, running fourth. He’s going super this guy and third up, should just about be at peak fitness.
9 Laure Me In (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is fitter and up to 1600m, he appeals as a key chance. Resumed over 1500m three weeks back at Rosehill where he was back, wide with cover, and tried hard, but condition just gave out late behind Discharged, who franked the form a week later. Like him up to 1600m and on the bigger track, hard to beat.
7 Pancho (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is knocking on the door. Chris Waller trained four year old that comes through the Discharged race from a fortnight back here. He was back in the run and while he never threatened, he did make up ground late and was good to the line. If he can sit a pair or two closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 2. (13:00) Gimcrack Stakes 1000m
It’s hard seeing anything other than a win for the Maher/Eustace filly 4 Enthaar (Bet Now: $1.60 TOP ODDS). Gee she went like a jet when winning her Kenso trial under J Mac, going through the motions on speed quite powerfully and smashed the clock in winning her trial. Think the only thing beating her is bad luck. One of the better bets on the program.
12 Total Babe (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of I Am Invincible for the WaterBott stable that earned her ticket into this race off the back of an all the way win at the Kenso trials. Was pushed out by Tommy and responded well before being throttled down late, but she did run really good time for the morning, so keen to see how she goes.
13 Vaccine (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have her share of talent for the WaterBott team. She won a trial on the Kenso track and was one that responded when asked for an effort and she took a split between runners to win her trial, which is a good sign for a baby. She’s got the Tulloch Lodge polish and has to be seriously respected.
Race 3. (13:35) Arrowfield Breeders' Plate 1000m
2 Astrologer (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) didn’t run great time for the morning when winning his Kenso trial, but in terms of action and movement, he was a standout. He was trucking throughout and when McEvoy gave him a squeeze, the response was there and instant. Times aren’t everything and sometimes you just have to trust what you see. And I what I saw was a smart colt.
6 Kalashnikov (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) is a key threat for me. He’s a son of Capitalist on debut and I suspect with the James Harron colours, being with Team Snowden, this horse will be ready to go to try and win the race his dad did before going on to bigger and better things. His trial win wasn’t the quickest of the morning, but the thing I liked was when asked for an effort, he responded and responded well.
9 Maurice’s Medad (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a Bjorn Baker trained son of Maurice on debut and I find him a fascinating runner given the breeding. He’s the colt in this line up that has had two trials, and each time he has looked pretty good despite racing greenly at various stages. Not sure he has the class of a couple of others, but he’s talented.
Race 4. (14:10) Hill Stakes 2000m
Think you have to be with 1 Fierce Impact (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS). In terms of proven big time performers, on a consistent basis, he has claims to being the best horse in Australia. Comes back to Sydney after winning another Group l, this time in the Makybe Diva when beating Russian Camelot, and we saw what he did last Saturday. Tick over trial was outstanding and 2000m looks ideal.
Was there any fluke about the performance of 8 Dadoozdart (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) in the Bill Ritchie two weeks ago? He was $101 and completely unwanted, but price and prior form aside, he was outstanding when fourth to Probabeel, and went to the line with a good one in Brandenburg. If he reproduces that effort here, the $26+ will seem ridiculous.
Fascinating runner is 5 Danceteria (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS), a quality animal for the Kris Lees camp that resumes. Didn’t really come up in the Autumn, albeit he did contest some strong races. Been given a really good break and although he comes into this with no trials, his best form from overseas would see him spank these.
Race 5. (14:45) Flight Stakes 1600m
Just needs clear air from the outset to build the revs and 2 Hungry Heart (Bet Now: $2.20) wins. Yes, Dame Giselle has a 2-0 record over her this prep, but the two runs have been sit/sprints, and the turn of foot Dame Giselle produces has been the difference. 1600m is a different pain barrier and IMO, Hungry Heart will eat it up. Been hot on her this prep, and not dropping off.
I do have a query at 1600m with 1 Dame Giselle (Bet Now: $2.70) but if it becomes a 400m sprint home, then she will give Hungry Heart an almighty scare. Turn foot she produced to win the Tea Rose was outstanding and she’s done nothing wrong this time in, winning 3/3. Good test for her here, but she’s got the runs on the board.
4 Montefilia (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to me like a filly that will love a rise in trip, more so than the 1600m. She was freshened up leading into the Tea Rose and was very good late when third to Dame Giselle. If this becomes a proper contest, she’ll be one of the strongest late. Does she have the class to go with Hungry Heart? Time will tell.
Race 6. (15:25) Premiere Stakes 1200m
It was a statement when 2 Classique Legend (Bet Now: $3.00) won The Shorts two weeks ago and I think he can make another statement here. It was an electric performance from the grey when he won here last time out, producing a brilliant finale to overhaul his rivals. He’s got improvement to come, and drawing near Nature Strip, I wonder if McEvoy will give him a dig and get the drag across, potentially being a stalker to Nature Strip.
1 Nature Strip (Bet Now: $1.75) is the one to beat but if you are on him, it will be heart in the mouth stuff. He dumped J Mac last Monday in a trial before trialling again on Monday and was a bit tardy to begin with but mostly looked to be going easily. The habit of jumping slowly is starting to creep back in so I’d be treading carefully if you want to dive into short odds.
Can 8 Libertini (Bet Now: $12.00) push claims for an Everest slot? Quality mare for Anthony Cummings when right, but the wheels have really fallen off her the past 12 months after being so explosive early on in her career. Been given a good break and has trialled up really well for her return. A win wouldn’t totally shock given the explosiveness she has.
Race 7. (16:05) Epsom Handicap 1600m
The one to beat here IMO is 11 Probabeel (Bet Now: $5.50). Classy mare for Jamie Richards that comes here off the back of a somewhat arrogant win in the Bill Ritchie two weeks ago. Once McEvoy had her just off the speed and not near last in the run, it was race over and she duly saluted. She’ll love the Randwick mile and track should be firm.
3 Star Of The Seas (Bet Now: $5.00) is deserving of a Group l win and he gets a great chance here. Has finished runner up at Group l level in four of his past five outings, the latest in the George Main where he surged hard late but just missed out on picking up stablemate Kolding. Gets a little pull in the weights from that run into this and is flying. Just needs to win one.
9 Wild Planet (Bet Now: $13.00) has always promised to be a Group l class horse so keen to see how he goes against these. Ugly watch first up in the Show County and it looked like it would be something similar in the Theo Marks but thankfully Tommy was able to get clear and he finished best to wear down Wild Planet. Races as if 1600m will suit, down in the weights and in an in form camp.
Race 8. (16:45) Metropolitan Handicap 2400m
Class and brilliance will carry 2 Mugatoo (Bet Now: $2.90) a long way. I think the way to beat this horse is to make it a proper staying contest, and not a sit/sprint. His undoing in the Autumn was when he was in proper staying races and not sit/sprints, like he has faced at his past couple, the latest the Newcastle Cup when showing his customary turn of foot. The weight is the issue. He’ll need to be the good horse the handicapper thinks he is in order to win.
8 Brimham Rocks (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Chris Waller trained stayer that looks spot on for this race after a couple of runs back from a spell, the latest outing being the Kingston Town when a strong third to Taikomochi after being near the speed. It’ll be interesting to see what Avdulla does from the wide gate, whether he goes forward. But convinced he’s going well.
I’ve seen worse $67 chances than 11 Carif (Bet Now: $26.00). He finally gets his right set up. A staying handicap on dry ground. He’s been more than a pass mark in all three runs this time in, teasing like he’s going to do something positive, the latest in the Kingston Town. I think at the big odds, he’s certainly worth something very small.
Race 9. (17:20) Cerrone (bm88) 1200m
Giving enormous respect to 8 Burning Crown (Bet Now: $7.00). Once upon a time, he was a proper rogue, but as he has got older, he has started to fulfill that early potential. Huge run in defeat first up over 900m at Newcastle in the Hurricane, sitting wide throughout and chasing gamely when second to Akasaki. Fitter, up to 1200m, lands on speed, hard to beat.
Fitter and up to 1200m are two big ticks for 4 Hilo (Bet Now: $3.20). James Cummings trained four year old that resumed three weeks ago at Rosehill where he got a suck run behind the speed before bursting through and looking home, but was nailed late by a quality mare, Fituese. He’ll come on from that and is hard to beat against these.
5 Asharani (Bet Now: $10.00) is a quality mare for Kris Lees that resumes. She looks like a Mare that could snare some blacktype during the Melbourne Spring so keen to see how she resumes. Is first up with two trials under the belt to get ready, the latest at Wyong when not really knocked about. Good fresh horse, and speed on in front should help her cause.
