Blacktype racing returns to Morphettville and the Parks track this Saturday where it is Penny Edition Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:11) Spring Carnival Handicap (70) 1250m
3 Eclair Sunshine (Bet Now: $4.00) clearly on top for me here. Above average type for the Stokes yard who resumed over 1050m on the course proper on June 17 where he sat off them before presenting wider and attacking the line hard to nab the well performed Kid Flash. Tipped out immediately with a Spring prep in mind. Keen to see what he does.
2 Sebfire (Bet Now: $4.50) produced an electric finish to win first up in a strong maiden at Swan Hill before racing on the course proper here a fortnight back where he looked a good thing on paper and pretty much ran up to that albeit the margin was only narrow. Fresh effort may have taken a fair bit out of him so I am expecting him to bounce back hard third up.
5 Sharing Secrets (Bet Now: $7.50) closed off with real purpose first up to run second to Poseidon’s Pool before racing in the Sebfire race two weeks back where he was again very good late, finishing the race nicely to run third. Getting to peak fitness now and stable is just low flying at the moment.
Race 2. (13:51) Irish Steeple 3500m
4 Ours (Bet Now: $3.10) interests me here. Kiwi jumper for Patrick Payne after formerly being with the legendary Kevin Myers that is making his debut down under. He comes through the Winter Carnival at Riccarton where he won his maiden over the steeples before backing up four days later in a strong race and not handling the back up. He’s a big watch here.
2 Abebe (Bet Now: $2.90) is a very consistent jumper for the Musgrove team who should take some beating here in a relatively thin race. He has been working on his jumps craft over the hurdles and been performing quite well, the latest at Ballarat when a game second to Gold Spur. Did trial well over the bigger fences before then so he’s up to these.
1 Mannertone (Bet Now: $15.00) will love the drop in depth here. He looked outclassed in the Grand National at Ballarat last time out and that proved to be the case with Tommy Ryan pulling him out of the contest. This is a very ordinary steeple, and it’s the sort of level he could bounce back in.
Race 3. (14:26) Syd McDonald Senior Memorial Handicap (82) 1950m
Thin race but leaning the way of 11 Vintage Grove (Bet Now: $2.80). Five year old gelding for the Richard Jolly yard who is on the quick back up after racing on the course proper last Saturday where he did a power of work in a fast run race, but despite that, he loomed large to win but just ran out off puff the final 75m. The win prior at this track/distance was super so happy to be in his corner.
1 Temps Voleur (Bet Now: $5.00) hadn’t really done much for a while but there was market support a fortnight back on the course proper to suggest he’d run well and he sure did that, leading all the way under Jordan Turner to score a narrow but brave win. Two starts on the Parks track for a win and fourth to Balf’s Choice. Reads well for this.
6 Have Plenty (Bet Now: $12.00) is getting closer and closer to peak fitness so I give him a knockout hope here. He ran over the mile last Saturday in what was a strong race and just faded late behind Victory Downs. Big drop in depth here and he is out to a trip which he likes and he does save his best for this circuit.
Race 4. (15:01) Irish Hurdle 3200m
1 Transfixed (Bet Now: $2.20) looks one of the better bets on the program. He was so so on the flat but he could potentially be one of the better jumpers in 12 months time. He is two for two over the sticks and has been very impressive each time, the latest coming three weeks back at this track/distance. Harder here, but have to side with him.
The gallant mare 3 Dane Hussler (Bet Now: $2.20) has found a new lease of live over the sticks for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Very poor effort two back at Sale but she bounced back in a big way last time out at Ballarat. She was bolting throughout before Tommy Ryan gave her clear air and she romped in eventually by ten. She’s the only threat.
2 Who Says I’m Ready (Bet Now: $8.50) drops a fair bit in grade/depth after contesting the Grand National Hurdle at Sandown last time out. Was outclassed in the end behind Ancient King but I thought he was pretty good all things considered. With better jumping, he should have won a strong hurdle race at Bendigo two back. Right in this.
Race 5. (15:41) James Boags Premium Handicap (75) 1000m
4 Stormcraft (Bet Now: $5.50) on top. Darren Weir trained runner who resumed with a brilliant win from the back to win at Ballarat before going to Bendigo where he couldn’t really pick his feet up on the shifty surface behind stablemate Labuan Star. Firmer surface here, third up, and J Allen steers.
10 Enzo The Barber (Bet Now: $6.50) scored a brilliant first up win here before not pulling up 100% next start. He then ran over the 1200m on the course proper a fortnight back and loomed large to win but the distance was just too far and was grabbed late by Mica Be The One. Back to 1000m, back on the Parks track, should see him go close.
11 Ashero (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Gordon Richards trained four year old that is talented and loaded with talent. He resumed a fortnight back over the 1050m on the course proper and was a bit unlucky not to finish closer behind Nodoubtaboutit. Got held up for a few strides when building momentum. Has won on the Parks track and draws a soft gate.
Race 6. (16:21) Schweppes Handicap (75) 1250m
7 Verstappen (Bet Now: $4.00) on top. Danny O’Brien trained gelding who has the potential to be a blacktype performer but needs to get his rating up big time which is why he has been placed here by the stable- hoping for the kill, and I think he gets it. Really good return at Geelong when beating all bar another potential blacktype performer in Crystal Fountain. Really keen on him here, especially fresh.
6 Penny For A Pound (Bet Now: $15.00) is a really good mare for the David Jolly yard who continued her good fresh record with a third over the 1000m here three weeks back behind the above average Mystified. Never really was going to win but she stuck to the task well before her condition just gave way late. Trialled up really well last week here and looks ready to go.
3 Captain Duffy (Bet Now: $31.00) is the big watch here. Back with Phillip Stokes after a stint in Sydney where he really failed to fire in some high quality events, including the Randwick Guineas. Wasn’t asked to do much in a recent Gawler trial, but if he is anywhere near right, he will take a power of beating.
Race 7. (17:01) UBET Penny Edition Stakes 1400m
I think the value here clearly lies with 1 Gailo Chop (Bet Now: $9.00). He was too bad to be true when first up in the PB Lawrence but he should be forgiven. Just did far too much work in the run and first up against that class of field…was never likely. Drops big time in depth here, gets a soft draw, handles all conditions and has a fab second up record.
3 Mio Dio (Bet Now: $4.60) is an absolute ripper for the Will Clarken stable. He’s not the most naturally talented horse going around, but what he has done since being with Clarken has been remarkable and that continued a fortnight with his win in the Spring Stakes. He will only improve off that and he loves racing on the Parks track.
15 Serenely Discreet (Bet Now: $8.00) looks good overs herself. Her two runs back have been strong and really, she should have bolted in last time but just had no luck at a vital stage behind Chamois Road. She should be close to peak fitness now third up from a break and up to 1400m is a big tick.
Race 8. (17:40) The Malcolm Morris Handicap (70) 1400m
12 Jamaican Rain (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Richard Laming trained mare who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming at Sale and the way she ran/won, that was exactly the case. She absolutely spanked them, won by nearly four, ran time and beat up a nice field. Only has to hold that form to go close here.
8 Supreme Polarity (Bet Now: $8.50) is a talented type for the Stokes yard who is three weeks between runs after racing on the Parks track over 1250m. I want to be forgiving of his failure. I don’t think he is a horse who can go 0-100 instantly. He needs to build momentum and he can’t. Up to the 1400m with clear air, he definitely can.
13 Miss Identified (Bet Now: $16.00) is a talented mare for Travis Doudle who kicked off the prep with a couple of strong seconds, including one here here behind Miss Jane, before going to Sandown where she was far from disgraced behind Special Diva. Draws to get good cover, likes racing here and the $16 does seem overs.
