One of the bigger days in Sydney racing for the Spring comes around this Saturday at Randwick where it is Epsom Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

There’s something about 6 Diddles (Bet Now: $7.00 FAT ODDS) I really like. Beautifully bred filly for Clarry Conners who has looked very good in a couple of trials, the latest over 800m at Warwick Farm when leading all the way and seemingly doing it rather easily I thought under Tommy Berry. The query is that Tommy has jumped off to ride a $34 pop. That aside, happy to be with her.

Danger

9 Mayaaseh (Bet Now: $4.25 FAT ODDS) is a beautifully bred daughter of Exceed And Excel on debut for the Snowden camp. I thought she was most impressive in winning her particular trial. Was pushed out somewhat when leading, but the big tick is that she responded and looked to move quite nicely. Well backed in early markets suggest she’s got ability.

Long Shot

If you’re looking for one at odds, definitely include 12 Press Week (Bet Now: $91.00 FAT ODDS), a daughter of Hinchinbrook on debut for the Brett Thompson team. Has only had the one trial, which came at Newcastle, and gee I thought she went very good, better than some of the fillies who trialled in Sydney. Did a bit wrong late, hence the lugging bit going on, gets gate one and finds C Williams. Definite watch.

I’ll go with 10 Krameric (Bet Now: $9.50 FAT ODDS) for the Waller team. This colt trialled last Monday at Randwick where he was run off his legs early but once balanced up and those in front steadied, I really liked the way he closed off, which followed a sharp trial win a couple of weeks prior. Looks a lovely type and I think he’ll be strong late.

Danger

7 Fiery Red (Bet Now: $5.75 FAT ODDS) is a son of Pierro for the WaterBott team. He covered a stack of extra ground in his trial behind Exceed The Stars and though pushed out, he went with that horse and looked to respond quite well to pressure, which is a good sign for a juvenile. Gapped third too which is another tick.

Long Shot

11 Lionsgate (Bet Now: $21.00 FAT ODDS) is a More Than Ready colt for the Snowden camp. In terms of the official trials, he looked the most professional. Jumped sweetly, landed on, relaxed, did everything nicely and went about his business quite nicely I thought. Probably will get double figures about him and I think that’s a touch of overs.

8 Mickey Blue Eyes (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS) for me. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this three year old, who was very good in his opening prep, most notably a second to Graff on debut. Given a good spell and resumed at Bendigo where he was a notable drifter but I loved the way he knuckled down late to get the win. The mile looks perfect and right down in the weights, he’s likeable with upside.

Danger

6 Purple Sector (Bet Now: $7.50 FAT ODDS) is a very interesting runner. John Thompson trains this three year old, who comes through a maiden at Kembla last week where he absolutely bolted in under Tye Angland, admittedly not beating much but he was sharp. Looks a progressive type and I think he can measure up here.

Long Shot

9 The Soloist (Bet Now: $41.00 FAT ODDS) is a Richard Freedman trained filly who is 2/2 to start her career, both coming at Goulburn over 1200m and 1300m. Hasn’t been beating much, but the way she has gone about it has been quite impressive and she’s run okay time each start relative to the meeting. 1600m and the class rise the two queries, but the stable don’t place them out of their grade unless they think it can measure up.

Race 4. (14:15) Hill Stakes 2000m

Back Me

Haven’t been on her back this prep, but I’m jumping on the 10 Egg Tart (Bet Now: $2.55 FAT ODDS) train now. She looks a good thing. Two runs back have been outstanding. Should have won the Tramway first up when luckless behind Comin Through before going to the George Main and running some sizzling late splits behind Winx. She’s flying and her record at 2000m+ is outstanding. Any rain and that makes her an even tougher prospect to beat.

Danger

9 Ace High (Bet Now: $4.50 FAT ODDS) looks the only major threat to her. He too comes through the George Main where he was near the speed and fought on pretty well but just didn’t have the zip of those in front and whacked away for fourth. He’s out to 2000m now, so getting to an ideal trip, and gets a sweet gate.

Long Shot

Expecting a much better run from 1 Who Shot Thebarman (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS). I thought he’d run a cheeky race in the George Main but he ran a bit below expectations given how well he trialled. Getting to a more ideal trip now and off the trials, he appeared to come back in brilliant order. Want to see confirmation on race day here.

Race 5. (14:50) Premiere Stakes 1200m

1 Redzel (Bet Now: $2.70) does look the one to beat. There were plenty who wanted to pot him and side with the trial pin up horse, Invincible Star. He gave the mare windburn and won with a lot of class and authority, plus ran sizzling time. The second up syndrome is a little query off such a dominant win, but he’s the best sprinter we have. I’ll trust him to run well.

Danger

5 In Her Time (Bet Now: $7.50) is the forgotten horse here isn’t she? Won this race last year, arguably should have got a slot in the Everest last year and has been a big time performer ever since. From all reports, her feet are the best they have been and she’s looked outstanding in trials/trackwork. I think she’s ready to make a statement here and we know she is versatile pattern wise, which is a big tick.

Long Shot

3 Santa Ana Lane (Bet Now: $7.00) comes through the Ball Of Muscle race at Caulfield and I thought his run was simply outstanding. Back, wide and with the big weight off a slow tempo but he produced outstanding late splits late behind Joe Pride’s sprinter. Looks primed to run well in The Everest. He’ll give them a start again here but launch late.

Race 6. (15:25) Flight Stakes 1600m

Back Me

At the odds, I have to be with 9 Maid Of Heaven (Bet Now: $14.00). She had a minor setback so she went into the Tea Rose fresh and I thought she was the best run behind Miss Fabulass, especially her last 75m when attacking the line with purpose. The only way she was going to threaten is if she drew a good gate and she has. Game on.

Danger

I’ve got a nice futures ticket on 2 Miss Fabulass (Bet Now: $2.05) so I’ll be cheering for her too, but surely her current odds are rock bottom. In saying that, she was just so explosive in the Tea Rose and that turn of foot late was that of a Group l horse. Gets her chance here and likely wins, but she’s too short for mine.

Long Shot

7 Baccarat Baby (Bet Now: $23.00) can run a decent race at odds. David Vandyke trains this filly, who has simply been too good for them up in Queensland. Admittedly she’s beat nothing but she’s done it nicely and with big weights. The tick for her over these is that she’s got hard mile runs under the belt so the 1600m here is no issue.

Race 7. (16:05) Epsom Handicap 1600m

It’s hard to get away from 7 Unforgotten (Bet Now: $4.20). Star mare for Chris Waller who hasn’t raced since giving them a caning in the Chelmsford when given a 12/10 steer by Bowman to race clear and dash like a proper horse. She just looks so well in at the weights and the break between runs is no issue as it should allow to her to have remaining speed in the legs.

Danger

3 D’Argento (Bet Now: $4.40) is a beauty. He’s been outstanding in a couple of runs back from a spell. Resumed with a gutsy third to Winx in the race named in her honour before going to the Theo Marks where he was ridden a bit upside down and didn’t have the same ping when second to Home Of The Brave. Back onto a firmer surface and down in the weights, he should take beating.

Long Shot

I reckon 4 Shillelagh (Bet Now: $23.00) is ticking over nicely for the Waller team. Really liked her resumption in the Theo Marks when back in the ruck but closing off quite nicely late in the piece behind Home Of The Brave. Tick over trial behind Single Gaze and she is a Cantala winner so she’s got the ability to beat these.

At the weights I’d say no, but on class, I can’t believe $14-$15 is on offer for 1 Auvray (Bet Now: $20.00). Thought he was quite good first up behind Avilius before going to the Newcastle Cup where I thought Tye rode a 12/10 on the horse and it was home, but Carzoff had the suck run and just had the dash in his legs late. Hard fit now, 2400m yes and he’s got class.

Danger

10 Brimham Rocks (Bet Now: $5.50) is going along nicely for Chris Waller, but could I have him as fav? Certainly not. Yet to win in Australia since coming from overseas, so betting wise, he’s too short, but he’s got the right form with a narrow second to Avilius in the Kingston Town. Weighted to run well…just needs to find a spot from the sticky gate.

Long Shot

Convinced that 3 Libran (Bet Now: $11.00) is going well for the Waller team. First two runs this time in, he produced outstanding late splits late behind Winx and Unforgotten respectively. He then went to the Kingston Town and was ridden as if it was a barrier trial behind Avilius. Up to 2400m is a big tick and has class.

Race 9. (17:25) Snitzel Sprint (88) 1200m

Back Me

11 Maximus (Bet Now: $6.50) for me. Team Snowden trains this gelding, who I thought produced a ripping resumption at Rosehill three weeks back on abog, closing off strongly nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be, when second to Soothing. Back on top of the ground, good second up record and draws to stalk Right Or Wrong, or even sit in front and land box seat.

Danger

15 Problem Solver (Bet Now: $4.60) is very likeable here. Gerald Ryan trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since the Autumn Carnival here when midfield in the James Carr behind Moss Trip. Has looked great in a couple of trials, good fresh horse and should get every chance from the draw with an in form Tim Clark steering.

Long Shot

Β 9 Beau Geste (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Street Cry resuming for the James Cummings stable. He had a pretty solid Autumn/Winter prep, which ended in the Daybreak Lover behind the well above average kiwi galloper The Bostonian. Been given a couple of quiet trials but he’s a very good fresh horse and likes racing here.
