The Masters continues at Ascot this Saturday where it is Winterbottom Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Winterbottom Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Winterbottom Stakes
Race 1. (15:24) Tourism Wa Trophy 1000m
1 Sassy Trader (Bet Now: $2.50) is fitter so want to give him another chance despite a rise in grade/depth. Ran over 1100m a few weeks ago here where he bungled the start and that pretty much sealed his fate, but to top it off, he wanted to wander about under pressure. Got the talent to win this. Just needs to put it together.
Giving respect to 2 Madam Torio (Bet Now: $3.60), who resumes off a mini spell for Martin Allan. Last raced on September 12 at Belmont when on speed and trying hard but was at the end of it and looked a tired horse when fourth to Brooklyn Pier. Saves her best for fresh legs and though comes here without a public trial, Chris Parnham does stick.
Not sure I could back 3 Our Danni (Bet Now: $18.00) to win but could certainly include her in wider multiples. Four weeks between runs since a solid enough effort here behind Chantorque in what looked a strong race on paper. Was a sharp two year old but hasn’t really translated it to her 3YO season. One for wider exotics.
Race 2. (16:04) Amelia Park (bm71+) 1400m
On top is 10 The Fugazi (Bet Now: $3.60) but not a great deal of confidence. Attempted to lead throughout two weeks ago in the RJ Peters and tried hard from the front but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Truly Great. Form out of that wasn’t exactly ticked off in the Railway, but back to this level, from the gate, he looks well placed to break through.
1 Position Of Power (Bet Now: $7.50) has been up forever it feels like but this David Harrison trained gelding is holding his form really well. Harvey made use of the barrier last time out when winning at this track/distance, getting the box seat from gate one and in a driving go, finished best. If he keeps holding his form, he’s hard to beat again.
4 Lorentinio (Bet Now: $23.00) is a son of Demerit for Jim taylor that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since May 30 when down the track at Belmont behind Festival Miss after sitting wide no cover for the trip. Looks to have trialled up well in readiness for his return and is a horse who can spring out a good run on the fresh side.
Race 3. (16:44) Mrs Mac's (rs1mw) 1400m
The Gangemi team have a great record with tried horses and they’ve continued that trend with 5 Island Missile (Bet Now: $4.50), formerly with the Snowden camp but since coming to WA, he’s done a really good job. Three runs and last start saw him win last Wednesday over 1200m here. The rise to 1400m looks perfect and finds a winnable race.
7 Beffunjar (Bet Now: $6.00) has put together a tidy little record in her 12 start career. She has won three of those starts, but you have to go back a little while to find a win. Still, her recent form is sound. Last start saw her run a close up third on Cup Day over 1500m here behind Cornflower, who is in form. Draws well and back 100m in trip is fine.
9 Peppijack (Bet Now: $7.50) is a very honest animal for Jason Grieve that should be suited back up to 1400m. Was 1400m back to 1200m two weeks back here where he was on speed and did try hard, but couldn’t finish it off and hold out the finale of Home In Five, settling for second. Back up in trip is a positive and he can take this out.
Race 4. (17:24) Westspeed Platinum Final-bm60+ 1400m
4 Pink ‘N’ Gray (Bet Now: $19.00) is a very genuine galloper and is so honest, so think he is the safe option here. He ran over 1400m here a couple of Wednesdays back when on speed throughout and tried hard but had no answers late for the finale produced by Wakan Tanka. He’ll give himself every chance with his racing pattern and proving hard to beat.
The signs were there that 7 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $7.00) was ready to go first up, with resuming at 1400m, Blinkers on and a sharp trial win. The market agreed, backing him into $8.50 from $11 and under Chris Parnham, he was too good for them in a strong return two weeks ago. Interesting to see what the market does second up.
Couldn’t back 2 Lacevinsky (Bet Now: $11.00) to win with borrowed money but he is an honest horse for Simon Miller who is rarely far away. Just can’t crack it for a win. Market liked him two weeks ago and he seemed to get the run of the race just behind the speed. Presented to win but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Wild Fusion. Can win…but couldn’t back to win. More an exotics option.
Race 5. (17:59) Crown Towers (bm66+) 1200m
Have to give 6 Resortman (Bet Now: $2.45) another chance. Michael Lane trained gelding that had trialled up very well prior to resuming over 1000m here two weeks ago where the track was very wet and he just really struggled to pick his feet up in the conditions, so I’d be forgiving of that run and back on top of the ground, he deserves another chance off those trials, that were too good to ignore off one run.
Good lead here that Pike is booked to ride 5 Sweet Dreamin’ (Bet Now: $8.00). Go back to earlier this year, Pike jumped on this guy and he won three on the bounce, so he knows the horse well. Forget last Saturday. Chased a strong speed and tired late. Pike is back on board and provided the run last weekend hasn’t busted him, he can take this out.
1 Mr Kunafa (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Blackfriars for Bruce Watkins that resumes. Hasn’t raced since April 18 over the mile here when down the track and looked a tired horse behind Utgard Loki. Like what I have seen from him in trials to get ready for his return and does save his best for Ascot. One to watch at odds.
Race 6. (18:35) Quayclean (bm78+) 1200m
1 Carocapo (Bet Now: $3.90) can win again. On the quick back up for Jim Taylor after winning last Saturday at this track/distance, and I thought the ride from Ramoly was a peach. Controlled things in front to suit the horse and from the 300m onwards, despite a $14 SP, he was never getting beat and was strong to the line. Has the gate to kick up and lead again and take some running down.
2 Don’t Fuss (Bet Now: $9.50) is an improver I feel. He was somewhat disappointing behind Carocapo last Saturday, but it was a real sit/sprint and that just doesn’t suit this horse so when the sprint went on, he couldn’t pick up. Tempo should be more genuine this time around and he can bounce back for sure with his best.
10 Fred Dag (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Patronize for Bruce Watkins that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since August 1 at Belmont over the mile when down the track behind the then in form Jeraft. Thought the recent Lark Hill trial was quite encouraging and he is a horse who can pull out a decent run fresh, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 7. (19:10) Tabtouch-r/c'ship Final-bm60+ 1200m
1 Manhattan Money (Bet Now: $6.50) has class on her side and I think that will be enough to get her home here in what looks a very competitive Regional Championship Final. She got her way into the race via a strong win in a heat at Kalgoorlie, lumping 60.5kg in the process. Has the class and the turn of foot to win this.
13 What About Moses (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Steve Wolfe trained gelding that kept up his impressive first up stats when winning the heat at Albany, landing some good bets in the process after getting a suck run behind the speed and finishing best when clear air presented. Not quite as dynamic second up but stable is flying at the moment.
4 Read The Riot Act (Bet Now: $13.00) is the knockout chance here. Son of Oratorio for Roy Rogers who ran third to What About Moses in the Albany heat and he was a real eye catcher from the back, producing good late splits when third to the Wolfe runner. If they go silly in front, which is potentially on the cards, he’ll be strong late.
Race 8. (19:50) Tattersall's Cup 2100m
Good test here for 3 Arctic Stream (Bet Now: $9.50), but I think he can take this out. Was good late in the Lee Steere behind Kay Cee before going to the Carbine Club last Saturday when ridden upside down and dropping off late behind Neufbosc. Better suited when ridden with a sit, so hopefully that eventuates this time around and the rise to 2100m suits.
10 Royal Command (Bet Now: $2.50) looks on track for another tilt at the Perth Cup, a race he did fail in earlier this year. Comes through the Ascot Gold Cup where he got back off the speed and worked home well but was never really a threat in picking up Too Close The Sun, who ran second in the Railway last Saturday, so the form has been ticked off. Fitter, up to 2100m, firmer footing, very likeable.
Not sure 5 Freez’emoff (Bet Now: $19.00) wins, but for wider multiples, could certainly entertain. Resumed over the mile here three weeks ago and just looked in need of the run behind Tollman, though she was specked in betting, into $21 from $26. Think if she’s going to be a legitimate Perth Cup contender, needs to be running well here.
Race 9. (20:30) Winterbottom Stakes 1200m
With due respect, overall, this isn’t a strong edition of the Winterbottom and if 1 Trekking (Bet Now: $2.20) is anywhere near his best, which the trial on Monday indicates he is, then he just wins. Not much went his way in the race last year behind Hey Doc but 12 months on, he’s a much better horse and the trial win on Monday was very sharp. He’s ready to go and only bad luck beats him.
16 Celebrity Queen (Bet Now: $7.00) is the one on the up and has the Peters/Williams combo and had it not been for Trekking, Pike would be steering instead of Chris Parnham, who has a fab record on the mare, with two wins and a second from three rides, the latest start seeing her win the Colonel Reeves two weeks ago. She’s the pick of the locals.
14 Flirtini (Bet Now: $31.00) is the blowout chance here. Out of sight out of mind with some given she didn’t do a great deal first up behind Celebrity Queen, but she is a mare who hates getting her toe in and that was clearly evident from the outset in the Colonel Reeves. Gets back on top of the ground and she can unleash a brilliant finale when she gets conditions to suit.
Race 10. (21:10) urphy (bm77+) 1600m
Back to this level, looks an ideal race for the Ross Price trained 1 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $10.00). Attempted to lead throughout in the Ascot Gold Cup two weeks ago and tried hard, but was clearly no match for Too Close The Sun, who ran second in the Railway last Saturday, so the form has been ticked off and do like him back to the mile. Hard to beat.
2 Money Maher (Bet Now: $5.00) is on the seven day back up for the Pearce camp after racing last Saturday in the Carbine Club when just off the speed throughout and tried hard. Just lacked the class to finish it off and be a winning threat when a close up fifth to Neufbosc. Fitter, up to the mile, he’s likeable here.
7 Jericho Missile (Bet Now: $13.00) is a little query at the mile but he does have a touch of quality about him when right. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago when back in the run and was never really a winning threat but liked the way he picked up late in the piece. Think 1600m first time here will be okay and his best is good enough.
