A couple of blacktype races are the drawcard for the nine event meeting for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:43) Xxxx Dry Hcp 1110m
5 One Shy Ruby (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the pony to bet on. Chris Anderson trained filly who got a blacktype placing next to her name two weeks ago in the Dalrello when on speed and fought hard under Jimmy Orman but just found one too good in Smart’N’Sexy. That form reads well for this and I think back to 1110m is a big tick.
2 Bellissimi Amci (Bet Now: $4.20) is a daughter of Rothesay for Rob Heathcoate that resumes. Hasn’t raced since March 21 at Eagle Farm when a close up second to surprise winner Mishani Epic and was potentially one for the Winter Carnival but the stable gave her a break. Recent trial was quite good and if this becomes a testing 1110m, she’ll be strong late.
I think that pair have a margin on the rest, with next besting 1 Dark Son (Bet Now: $7.00), short course juvenile for the Sears camp who may struggle at the 1110m at this level, but he’s got the early toe to give himself every chance and does have the hard race experience/fitness under the belt, and with the claim for Murphy, will give a sight.
Race 2. (12:18) Gallopers Sports Club Plate 2030m
8 Cellarmaid (Bet Now: $3.10) on top. Kelly Schweida trained filly that beat all bar Waipati two back over 1800m at the Gold Coast prior to running in the Roses two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and loved the way she found the line when ridden cold, finishing second to a high class filly in Vanna Girl. Off that effort, she’ll eat up 2000m and that form is A1 for this.
3 Lando Bay (Bet Now: $4.40) is racing so well this time in for John Thompson. Loved the way he put them away to win over 1800m at Randwick three weeks ago against his own age, largely helped by a sweet steer from Bowman. He’s racing as if 2000m will be okay and this time of year, the depth starts to drop away so I think this is good placement.
6 Man Of Sinn (Bet Now: $9.00) would love a rise to 2400m instead of coming back to 2000m but it was hard to miss his effort in the Rough Habit from three weeks ago behind Ballistic Boy after spotting them a decent start in the run. He looks a progressive stayer on the rise and if this becomes a testing 2000m, he’ll be strong late.
Race 3. (12:53) Ascot Green (85) 1050m
17 Hi Fiver (Bet Now: $6.50) is racing in super form for Brian Wakefield. Has won two on the bounce, the latest coming four weeks ago over this track/distance when loving a fast tempo before getting the splits nearer the inside and was too god for Koonunga, who arguably should have won last Saturday at Flemington so that reads well for this.
The best version of 5 Spirit’s Choice (Bet Now: $4.00) would see her win this but just not 100% sold on how well she’s going. In saying that, her recent runs have come in much stronger races than this. I think if she is to win, either has to lead or be outside the leader because she does seem a bit one dimensional in the sense she jumps and runs.
15 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing quite well for Barry Lockwood and is around the mark more often than not. Just a little query on his line chasing ability at the end of 1050m. 1300m was a stretch too far last time out behind Thy Kingdom Come but he has the solid run under the belt to perhaps be stronger this time around at the end of the race, and gate one is a big help.
Race 4. (13:28) Souths Sports Club Hcp 1350m
On top is 3 Scathing (Bet Now: $3.60) for the Chris Munce team. This son of Trusting has been given a freshen up since contesting the Fred Best where he was far from disgraced in defeat when fourth to Dawn Passage, who went on to start favourite in a Stradbroke, so you’d like to think that form reads very well for this, and tick over trial was impressive.
1 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $4.20) deserves a crack at this level. Kris Lees has this filly going super. Loved the way she knuckled down to win two back on the Kenso track before racing at Randwick a few weeks ago where Louise Day produced a 12/10 steer from the wide gate to beat a noted wet tracker in Misteed. Good test here, but now is the right time of year to try.
8 Starla (Bet Now: $9.50) is an interesting runner. Chris Waller trained filly who was scratched from last Saturday to be saved for this. Last start came over 1300m at Warwick Farm when wide throughout and was there to be beaten but showed good ticker under J Mac to get the win. Given a freshen up, over a month between runs with no trial. Watch the market.
Race 5. (14:03) Premiers Cup 2200m
Think a rise in trip will suit 9 La Pulga (Bet Now: $4.60), who comes here with different form, having raced in the Eagle Farm Mile last Saturday where he was back in a fast run race and worked home strongly late behind Gaulois. Is proven at 2200m and has the upside compared to some of these who are just plugging away.
Back to 2200m and back to Doomben are two big ticks that sway me the way of 2 Le Juge (Bet Now: $4.80), who won the Chairmans two back over 2000m here before stepping up to 2400m at Eagle Farm in the Tatts Cup and wasn’t as effective when fourth to stablemate Brimham Rocks. He’s a Doomben specialist and back 200m in trip I do like.
The 2000m+ form of 4 Satono Rosen (Bet Now: $21.00) certainly reads well for a race like this. Both runs have come over the mile, the latest coming three weeks ago at Randwick on a bottomless track where he couldn’t pick his feet up behind Dealmaker. Thought the trial last week was pretty good and 2000m+ is when he finds his best, so an improved showing is certainly on the cards.
Race 6. (14:42) Canadian Club Plate (c6) 1350m
6 Soxagon (Bet Now: $2.30) to bounce back. Like most, was keen on him over 1400m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago. He got beat, had his chance when beaten by Red Chase…but did Stewart go too slow? Is leading not his caper, or was just beaten fair and square? I think back to a truly run 1350m is ideal and with cover, a bunny to chase, I dare say he’ll be more effective.
7 Thy Kingdom Come (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the key and perhaps only threat to Soxagon. Pulled his head off two weeks ago at Eagle Farm but still managed to produce an impressive finale to nab Elixir right on the peg. Suspect with Shijin engaged, this will become a fast run 1350m and he potentially can land box seat behind Shijin.
12 The Pines (Bet Now: $11.00) is a handy mare for the Edmonds camp that can take this out. Ran over 1300m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she was back near last throughout and given the race shape, she really had no chance, but liked the way she finished her race off behind Solar Star. That was her first run in a month, so you’d think there’s room for improvement.
Race 7. (15:22) Spear Chief Hcp 1350m
4 Twitchy Frank (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. Has had a few homes throughout her career but now finds herself with Tony Gollan in the search of some blacktype. First run for the new stable here and looks to be settling into Queensland life nicely if her trial at Deagon on Tuesday is any guide. Loved the way she went and is a definite yard/market watch.
1 Scallopini (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Steve O’Dea trained galloper that surged hard best to win the Hinkler first up before going to the Ascot Handicap where he was back and spotting them a decent start. Closed off strongly late to run third to surprise winner In Good Time. Outstanding third up record and should take some beating.
2 Chapter And Verse (Bet Now: $7.50) looks like he is crying out for the 1350m and he gets it here. Has just found the 1200m in both runs back from a break a bit sharp, but the latest outing in the Ascot Handicap was quite good I thought behind In Good Time, hitting a flat spot when asked for the big effort but was good late. Definite winning chance.
Race 8. (16:00) Sapphire Stakes 1630m
5 Sure Knee (Bet Now: $8.00) is flying for Chris Waller. Ran over 1300m at Rosehill two weeks ago when hooked back from the wide gate but loved the way she found the line behind stablemate True Detective. The chance could well be there for her to sit closer in the run and if that can eventuate here, think she’ll take a power of beating.
6 Krone (Bet Now: $4.80) hasn’t really been tried beyond 1400m but she’s racing as if she’ll appreciate the 1600m. Ran in the Dane Ripper where she got a fair way back in the run but closed off strongly, only to run a close up fifth to Love You Lucy. Once upon a time she was most effective at 1200m but is racing as if she wants the mile.
3 Delectation Girl (Bet Now: $9.00) is back to Mares grade and I think she’s an improver here for sure. Ran in the Eagle Farm Mile a fortnight back in what was a fast run race, and for mine, she was just run off her legs, but she did make up ground very late behind Gaulois. Back to Mares grade, she can easily bounce back here.
Race 9. (16:34) Alcyone Hotel Residences (75) 1200m
2 Pinnacle Star (Bet Now: $3.30) is a son of Starspangledbanner for the David Vandyke stable that is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Eagle Farm when doing a bit of work in the run and I thought was more than sound in defeat behind the in form Plenty, who was luckless a week later, so think that form reads well for this.
1 Oriental Runner (Bet Now: $6.00) is a few weeks between runs for Stuart Kendrick since racing over 1200m here where he was a well supported short priced elect and seemed to get the right run in transit but gee he was weak late when third to Right Or Wrong, who was far from disgraced in the Ascot Handicap two weeks ago. With the right run, he can win.
11 Love Squirrels (Bet Now: $8.50) should be suited up to 1200m. Resumed over 1110m here at the midweeks where she was very one paced in the straight originally when asked for the effort by Fradd but picked up and was pretty good late. Looks like a horse that wants further, which she gets here, and wasn’t beaten far by Pinnacle Star second up last prep.
