A nine race program has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out half a metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:42) Tab Venue Mode Hcp 1110m
6 Stellar Magic (Bet Now:Β $2.35) on top for me in the opener. O’Dea/Hoysted trained filly that continued their great record at Grafton with this girl. She led throughout to win a 1000m maiden against the older horses, bolted up and ran good time, which is always a good sign. Should hold up from the inside gate and prove hard to run down.
2 General Wolffe (Bet Now:Β $5.00) has to be respected. He spanked them last time out over 1200m here, sitting near the speed throughout before booting clear in the straight and maintaining a big margin to the line, winning by over five lengths. Form around him does read well…just depends how will he handle a wet track.
1 Collay’s Spirit (Bet Now:Β $19.00) is suited up in trip. Resumed over 1000m at the Sunny Coast and just found them a bit sharp, but liked the way he finished his race off when fourth, beaten just under two lengths. He’ll appreciate a rise in distance and has won on soft ground, so wet track is no issue.
Race 2. (13:22) Iconic Care Hcp 2000m
4 Humbolt Current (Bet Now:Β $1.55) does look the one to beat after scratchings, but is short enough now as an odds on pop. He ran over 2400m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago where he had a great struggle with the in form Romakash and looked like he would fight back and win. Was just outgunned on the line. The one to beat, clearly, especially with an improving track.
3 Sir Barnabus (Bet Now:Β $6.00) can be an improver here at odds. He was good two back in the Members Cup behind Hail Manhattan before going to the Gold Coast where he got back in the run and failed to fire a shot on testing ground behind Dissolution. Better suited here and can take this out.
8 Meteor Light (Bet Now:Β $14.00) is a dead set swimmer so wetter the better for this former Victorian, who has done a pretty good job since joining the Hulbert camp. He ran third to Romakash at Eagle Farm last time and he stuck on pretty well after sitting on speed. If he gets the conditions he wants, he’ll take beating.
Race 3. (14:02) Ace. (bm85) 1600m
7 Guise (Bet Now:Β $3.30) is a leading chance for Chris Waller. Ran three weeks ago at Eagle Farm over 1800m. Got back in the run in what turned out to be a sit/sprint, and she’s a mare who doesn’t really like that set up. She prefers to go through her gears and build momentum into the race, so hopefully that eventuates here.
2 Seeingisbelieving (Bet Now:Β $3.90) can be an improver at odds for Tony Gollan. He resumed three weeks ago at Eagle Farm over 1400m. Paraded like he would need the run and that is how it panned out when last behind She Za Boss. Might need one more, but has a touch of quality when right.
4 Barefoot (Bet Now:Β $20.00) can be a definite improver up in trip for the Sears camp. Resumed over 1300m a fortnight ago at the Gold Coast where she wasn’t happy on the wet track but still thought she was a pass mark behind Akage. If this track can dry out, I think she’s in this as a knockout chance.
Race 4. (14:42) Ethos Orthodontics Hcp 1350m
Alan Robinson has a nice three year old on his hands here in 3 Bundyandcoke (Bet Now:Β $3.70). Has shown good promise in all four career outings, winning his past two, each coming over 1200m here. Has been strong late in both wins and is racing like he will appreciate further so the 1350m here I do like.
6 Better Get Set (Bet Now:Β $5.50) looks to have returned in really good order to my eye. Was a clear eye catcher first up behind Sweet Rhapsody before going to the 3YO Jewel at the Gold Coast where she ended up starting $101. She ran out of her skin when a closing fourth. Off that, should love the rise to 1350m and you’d like to think has upside provided last start hasn’t busted her.
9 Nicci’s Spirit (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is suited back up in trip. Tony Gollan trained filly that has run over 1200m her past couple, the latest being the 3YO Jewel. Never really a winning factor where she was in the run but was good late to run fifth. Been up a while, but the form around her reads well.
Race 5. (15:22) Pitcher Partners Hcp 1350m
7 Elixir (Bet Now:Β $4.80) is racing well for Les Kelly. Tempo was against him two back behind I’ve Gotta Nel before backing up a week later and running well yet again when a close up fourth to Akage on a very testing Gold Coast track. He won’t mind getting his feet wet and does have decent Doomben wet track form.
Great to see 1 Vanna Girl (Bet Now:Β $2.40) back at the races. Team Edmonds trained mare that resumes after a mixed Spring prep, where she didn’t really measure up in Sydney but her two runs at Flemington during Cup Week were luckless. She has class/quality on her side and in a race like this, she’ll take a power of beating.
I’m very interested in 4 Cloak (Bet Now:Β $4.80), who resumes for David Vandyke. He really came of age last prep for the stable, winning four on the bounce before a game second to Reckless Choice at Eagle Farm and was spelled. The trial was just fair I thought but he’s always been a raceday horse and never really been a barrier trial star.
Race 6. (16:02) Chemist W'house Click & Go-c3 1110m
14 Weona Smartone (Bet Now:Β $1.85) is a son of Shamexpress for David Vandyke that resumes. This four year old had a two run Spring prep, winning on both occasions over 1000m at the Sunny Coast. Been given a good break, potentially with the Winter Carnival in mind, and has trialled super in readiness.
6 Leadership Spill (Bet Now:Β $4.00) deserves another chance. Returned to racing with a dominant all the way win here before going to Eagle Farm three weeks ago where he led and seemed to have his chance I thought when fourth, a tiring fourth at that. Third up, hard fit, he can bounce back for sure.
11 Contemptuous (Bet Now:Β $17.00) lacks the class of some of these, but is hard fit, racing well and should lob into a perfect spot from the draw. Dominant win fresh at the Sunny Coast before racing here when near the speed throughout and battling away pretty well behind Amiche. Must for exotics.
Race 7. (16:42) Capestone Village Plate (c3) 1110m
6 Snitzari (Bet Now:Β $2.60) is a Kris Lees trained filly that has been up a little while but is holding her form nicely. Ran here last Wednesday and she ate up the mud to bolt in, winning in very testing conditions. Seems to be be holding her form well despite hard racing and has to be respected here.
4 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now:Β $7.50) isn’t the most reliable galloper going around but is usually thereabouts at this level. Ran the Military Rose at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and like most that meeting, she didn’t seem to handle the wet track when fourth. Not sure I could back her to win, but a must for multiples.
9 Daring Belle (Bet Now:Β $46.00) has a pretty plain strike rate, but she does come here as a last start winner. Got the job done on testing ground at Doomben two back under a good ride from Cowan. Then raced here last Wednesday testing ground and was far from disgraced in third. Harder here, so couldn’t back her to win, but think she is a definite inclusion in wider multiples.
Race 8. (17:18) Gotransit Hcp 1050m
7 Toorooloo (Bet Now:Β $4.20) looks the safe option. David Vandyke trained filly that showed good ticker to lead throughout last start at the Sunny Coast over 1200m. She was there to be run down in the straight and was strongly challenged but found plenty under pressure to kick on and fend them off. Run of the race from the draw and back in trip no issue.
9 Snappy Reply (Bet Now:Β $3.60) is a smart filly for Tony Gollan that resumes. She did a super job in her first prep around this time last year, winning on debut before placing in the other two runs, both over 1200m here in strong races. Bred to swim and stable is going super at the moment, so a definite market watch.
13 Salbris (Bet Now:Β $12.00) can be dangerous here at odds. Daughter of Spirit Of Boom for Stuart Kendrick that resumes. Did a good job in her first prep, winning one and placing in a further runs from three outings. Trialled well leading in to get ready for his return and Blinkers on for the return signals intent.
Race 9. (18:00) Aus Natural Therapeutic Grp-c6 1200m
6 Lashes (Bet Now:Β $3.80) is a quality mare for Matty Smith that can certainly win this without surprising. Had a two run stint in Melbourne in search of blacktype. Ran fourth in the Bellmaine behind Probabeel before finishing down the track behind Fabergino at Flemington. Better suited in a race like this and loves wet ground.
8 So Taken (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is another that looks to map super. Well placed by the Waller camp two weeks ago at the Gold Coast, finding wet ground, finding a relatively thin race and she duly bolted up. Finds another winnable race and drops in weight, plus looks to map sweetly just off a genuine speed.
5 Guntantes (Bet Now:Β $23.00) interests me. Rob Heathcoate trained four year old that resumes. He hasn’t really fired a shot since his two year old days so interesting that the stable have persisted to try and get him back to positive form. Resumes without a public trial but doesn’t mind give in the track and gets in well after the claim.
