Eight races will be run and won at Morphettville on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out thirteen metres from the 1200m-400m; Out ten metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:11) Medallion Homes Maiden Plate 1100m
7 Glam Guru (Bet Now: $2.60) should win on exposed form. Macdonald/Gluyas trained filly who could develop into a Thousand Guineas type so we will see how she goes here. Two runs in the Autumn were both blacktype and both in strong races, with the debut being behind Time Awaits before racing down the Flemington straight and finishing behind Shoals. No trials, but class should get her home off that form.
1 Leorbit (Bet Now: $4.20) is a three year old gelding making his debut for the Will Clarken camp. Another that nicely is bred and on the breeding, he won’t need much time to show his best. Thought he trialled up really well on August 10 at Gawler and he is another that has been nominated/accepted/scratched a few times.
6 Sound Money (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Phillip Stokes trained gelding who debuted at Balaklava last Wednesday and didn’t really do a great deal to be fair but that maiden did look to have good depth to it. Stokes did have a couple of better looking types nominated here, but he goes with this runner which interests me.
Race 2. (13:46) UBET Maiden Plate 1100m
6 My Three Sons (Bet Now: $4.80) is a first starter for the Stokes yard. Three year old gelding who is well bred and the breed does come to hand early. Trialled up nicely at Gawler recently behind the well performed 3YO Kid Flash, and when it comes to the stable and first starters, you always respect.
11 Unscopeable (Bet Now: $4.20) is a filly first up for the Chris Bieg yard. She ran some nice races during the Autumn, but had enough and was a touch outclassed in the last run behind Broadband in the Breeders Stakes. No trials to speak of, but she did run okay behind Sandaat on debut.
2 Axelrod (Bet Now: $11.00) is an I Am Invincible gelding on debut for the Lloyd Kennewell yard. This bloke has only had the one public trial, which came at Gawler on August 10 where he looked to go quite well to the eye. In a race with not much depth, I think you have to respect this guy big time.
Race 3. (14:21) Irish Raceday September 2 Handicap (90) 1050m
1 Gun Case (Bet Now: $3.10) on top in a race that looks hard to get confident about. He ran down the straight at Flemington last time out where he got back in the run and couldn’t really come on behind Sunday Escape in a real messy race with several unlucky runners. Should get the sweet run from the gate here and the claim for Wong is a big tick.
4 Usain Dane (Bet Now: $5.00) is becoming a bit costly to follow but he does find a very winnable race here if he found his best form. He ran over the 1200m here a fortnight four weeks back and just lacked the turn of foot when the leaders sprinted but his effort was sound behind Go The Journey, who has run well since. Back to 1050m a big tick for this Stokes runner.
6 Brimarvi Prince (Bet Now: $17.00) could be a big improver here at odds. He resumed on the Parks track two weeks back and his run was better than what it reads. Got badly held up at the top of the straight and on a wet track with 61kg fresh, he was never going to dash from a standing start. He can with 54kg on his back and with the run under the belt.
Race 4. (14:56) Hughes Limousines Handicap (70) 2050m
9 Kirona (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare who is low flying this time in for the Balfour team. Two runs this time in, both over unsuitable trips and both times she has won, the latest coming last Wednesday at Balaklava where she was off the bit before the turn but picked up hard late and got the win. She will eat up the 2000m here.
3 Annaman (Bet Now: $2.70) gets one more chance for me. Got too far back two back behind Alamonteel before going to Flemington where he struck a hot field but his effort was more than commendable behind the above average Alward. Clearly no horse of that depth here, so he surely must take some beating.
11 Sagaab (Bet Now: $14.00) is on the seven day back up for the Travis Doudle team after racing over the mile here last Saturday where he got back off the pace and was off the bit a fair way out but kept coming and really hit the line hard late behind Creance. Clearly looking for further, which he gets here, and I like he is on the quick turnaround.
Race 5. (15:36) James Boags Premium Handicap (80) 1200m
2 Beautiful Flyer (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented mare that resumes for the Len Jarvis. She was a real find during the Autumn, constantly running well at a high level but the stable aimed too high in the Robert Sangster and Proud Miss to end the prep. Looked very good in a trial at Gawler and she flies fresh.
4 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $3.50) is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Barry Brook team who should be respected enormously here. She is three weeks between runs since racing over the 1250m on the Parks track where she toughed it out strongly and held off Sudden Wealth. Not the greatest of records on the course proper, but some of those failures were in strong races and she is a mare low flying.
1 Scratchy Lass (Bet Now: $10.00) contests the easiest race she has faced in a long time so it will be interesting to see how she goes with the massive drop in grade. Thought she didn’t do a bad job four weeks back at this track/distance in a slowly run race, sticking on quite well behind Go The Journey, who has run well since. She gets a great chance to bounce back to some positive form.
Race 6. (16:16) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (64) 1100m
8 Casque (Bet Now: $5.00) is two weeks between runs for the Robbie Laing yard after racing on the Parks track over 1000m where I thought he was pretty good in defeat but clearly no match for the blacktype performer Mystified, beaten three lengths into second. Up to 1100m yes, bigger track yes and more tempo yes.
4 Fully Stoked (Bet Now: $5.50) is a quality Al Maher gelding that is first up here for Phillip Stokes. This horse was heading down the Derby path in the Autumn but after failing to see the 1800m out in the Port Adelaide Guineas, he was freshened back to 1400m and failed to fire. Given a quiet trial recently and I’d be very wary here because he is the best horse in the race.
5 He Is Golden (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented and sparingly raced gelding who is five weeks between runs since racing over the 1000m here where he did a bit of work in the run yet kicked hard, only to be bloused late by Enzo The Barber, who has run well since to make sure that form is okay. 1100m is a little query, but with a nice run near the speed without doing much work, he can run it out.
Race 7. (16:56) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1200m
9 So Skilled (Bet Now: $3.30) is an above average four year old that resumes for the Dan Shepherd yard. This boy kicked off his career with three races during the Summer, winning two of three, including a win over this track/distance over Mica Be The One, who won last Saturday. Trial was outstanding and he looks ready to go.
1 Counter Spin (Bet Now: $5.00) can be a bit hit and miss at times for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable but he is never really far away and always runs well for connections. Last start he loomed to win the race but he was dipping and diving throughout the straight behind Chamois Road. Gets the claim for Raquel Clark and strikes a thin race.
3 Spy Decoder (Bet Now: $31.00) is the big watch for mine. Former Team Cummings galloper now with Grant Young and Young has done a great job through the years of getting the best out of these cast offs, and this is one of the better cast offs he has got. First run for him, I’ll be keen to see what he does.
Race 8. (17:35) Schweppes Handicap (82) 1600m
2 Balf’s Choice (Bet Now: $3.40) is a horse who is just low flying at the moment for the Balfour yard and it’s hard to go anywhere else. He looked gone 600m out two weeks back over the 1550m but he kept finding under the urgings of Neilson to nab London Fog late and draw clear. Heading towards the Balaklava Cup and this looks an ideal lead in.
6 Black Sheep (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Darren Weir trained seven year old who should be respected enormously here. His effort last time out over 1700m at Flemington was fabulous. He did a power of work in the run, sitting three and four wide no cover for the trip yet still kept coming and was only beaten off the final 75m when fifth to Jaminzah. With a more economical trip here, he can win for sure.
1 Victory Downs (Bet Now: $5.50) comes back in trip and I think that will be perfect for this SA raider. Arguably should have won the Winter Championship Final two back but had no luck before stepping up to 2000m where he attempted to lead all the way and that was clearly not his go behind Pacodali. Better when he has something to chase so if that eventuates, he’ll take some beating at odds.
