A strong eight race card has been set down for Mornington on Sunday where it is Ansett Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:55) Total Animal Supplies (bm70) 2400m
Bludger of a staying race to kick the meeting off. 3 Montabot (Bet Now: $5.50) could easily blow this field away given he’s a lightly raced import with #SF. Few weeks between runs since a down the track effort at Kembla behind Our Intrigue. That form does read quite well for this. The form reads well…just yet to win this prep and hasn’t won in a long time being the query.
Safe option is 1 Prince Ziggy (Bet Now: $3.50), who is racing really well at the moment for Jamie Edwards but can’t quite crack it for a win. Finished runner up his past two, the latest at Swan Hill when fighting on strongly in the straight. Gets in well after the claim, draws soft, he’ll run an honest race.
6 Border Leicester (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing well for Team Browne and should be around the mark. He ran over 3000m here last time and was sound in defeat, albeit no match for True Marvel when second. He’s got no turn of foot, so back in trip a query, but he’ll stay and be strong at the end provided this isn’t a sit/sprint.
Race 2. (13:25) Mount Popa (bm70) 1500m
8 Groovy Kinda Love (Bet Now: $3.30) has had a really good grounding for her return and I think it can be a winning return for Mick Kent. This mare has had two trials and a jumpout to get ready for her resumption and Damian Lane, who rides her better than anyone else, is on here. She’ll do me.
10 Plucky Pirouette (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy mare for Craig Jennings that resumes. She got to her best when she got to 2000m+ last prep, so 1500m might be on the short side for her, but she has looked encouraging in a couple of jumpouts to get ready, so watch the market with her.
2 Meehni (Bet Now: $11.00) gets the Blinkers back on, and that could spark improvement from this Team McEvoy mare. Few weeks between runs since a fair effort at Sandown behind a handy horse, Petruchio. Back to Mares grade, and with the claim, her best is certainly good enough.
Race 3. (14:00) Kenya (bm70) 1000m
7 Starry Legend (Bet Now: $2.50) is a definite market/yard watch. John Sadler trained three year old that resumes after a three run prep as a juvenile. He won the first two in good style before contesting The Showdown over 1200m at Caulfield where the six furlongs was a bridge too far. Three jumpouts to get ready tells me he’s wound up to run a positive race fresh.
8 The Billionaire (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Team Freedman trained four year old that resumes. Hasn’t raced since March 24 at Sandown when a close up second to Encircle after sitting near the speed, and that is where he’ll likely be in the run here, especially with two solid trials under the belt to get ready.
5 Divine Mr Tycoon (Bet Now: $71.00) hasn’t set the world on fire in two runs back from a break, but overall, this is one of the weaker races he has contested in some time. Both runs this prep have come in town, the latest being a few weeks back at Caulfield behind Second Slip. That form reads well for this.
Race 4. (14:35) Penang Turf Club Trophy (bm70) 2000m
Fitter and up in trip are two big ticks for 7 Nobel Heights (Bet Now: $2.45). Matt Cumani trained gelding that resumed over 1800m at Sandown. Just got held up for a stride or two before eventually getting clear and was good late behind Bea Tempted. Hard to beat if gate one is used to advantage.
1 Herman Hesse (Bet Now: $3.50) has the Maher/Eustace polish and has to command respect with upside. Strong Australian debut on the Ballarat Synthetic before going to a Country Cup at Warracknabeal where he had to chase a solid tempo and had to like the way he dug in late when required. Heading in the right direction and is hard to beat.
9 Angelic Scent (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to have her share of talent for Matt Laurie. Resumed over 1500m here where she paraded like she would need the run but despite that, she finished off her race with real purpose when third. Straight to 2000m is interesting but home track advantage and has upside.
Race 5. (15:15) Laverrod (bm70) 1200m
1200m is on the short side for 3 Steinem (Bet Now: $2.40) but she could just blow these away with natural talent. Made a big impression in her first prep, so much so she started favourite in the SA Oaks where it all came up too soon for her. Couple of trials, so the grounding is there. Just needs luck from the draw.
1 Zoushine (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Team McEvoy mare that is certainly capable if she produced something near her best. Comes through the Madame Bolli race at Sandown mentioned above where she had a suck run behind the speed and had her chance when fifth. Giving her another chance up in trip.
4 Energy Within (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Tom Dabernig trained mare that had her first run for the new camp when resuming at this track/distance and I thought she showed a bit of ticker in getting the job done from off the speed, making a sustained run and finishing best. Harder here, but has Olly steering and is a first four contender.
Race 6. (15:45) R.m. Ansett Classic 2400m
I’m with 7 Lunar Flare (Bet Now: $3.50) but not a great deal of confidence. Loomed like she would win at Flemington last time out but whether she turned it up, or Tooradin kicked on too strongly, not sure. But she is bursting to win a race and while she isn’t winning, she is racing well. Something that can’t be said about some of these.
5 High Emocean (Bet Now: $3.50) won this race last year. Is she going as well 12 months on? I’d say no, but overall, the depth here is very much on the thin side, and she does have the Maher/Eustace polish. Brutally run race at the Valley last time, which found her out. Been given a good break to recover, and up in trip, she can win.
2 Aktau (Bet Now: $18.00) won the Mornington Cup last year. He hasn’t done a great deal since then so perhaps getting back to this track will spark some form of improvement. Beat just one runner home behind Degraves in the race mentioned above so off that, can’t see him turning the tables, but a first four threat.
Race 7. (16:20) High Emocean (bm70) 1200m
I did this preview with 2 Snapper (Bet Now: $2.10) out, but now that he is racing here, he’s a good thing. Resumed at Sandown where the market said it would be a prep, blowing out in betting alarmingly, but despite that, got really close to knocking off Twist Of Fury. That horse ran poor yesterday, but it still looks strong form for this and he’s got upside/improvement to come.
I’m looking at this race with Snapper running at the Valley, not here. If he runs here, he just wins. 9 Salton Sea (Bet Now: $4.40) looks the one to beat with him out though. Cliff Brown trained gelding that has had two runs this time in, latest coming at this track/distance when looking home but was nabbed late by Energy Within. Good set up this time around with Lane sticking and he’ll do me.
11 Hickok (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Tony Noonan trained four year old that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since July 24 when close in a solid 3YO race at Caulfield won by Sacred Palace in what has turned out to be a hot form race, with four winners coming from it. Jumped out well leading in, trained here and maps well from the gate.
Race 8. (16:55) Rosebud Country Club (bm70) 1500m
11 Francesco Guardi (Bet Now: $8.00) is a big query here. Chris Waller trained former UK galloper that makes his Australian debut. The stable can produce an import to win at start one down under, and didn’t mind his Flemington jumpout last week. Not sure he wins, but a must for exotics.
10 Deepstrike (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented four year old for the Price/Kent camp that resumes. He was touted as a SA Derby prospect after impressive performances early in the prep when last in work, but the wheels fell off when he got to Adelaide. Starting off fresh here, has trialled well enough and has a touch of quality.
12 Toosbuy (Bet Now: $23.00) has home track advantage and should land in a good spot from the draw. Brett Scott trained gelding that surprised many with a win two back at Bendigo before going to Cranbourne when far from disgraced behind Milton Park. He’s a first four contender.
