Boxing Day racing in Sydney heads to Randwick, headlined by the Summer Cup (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:05) HEADWATER @ VINERY HCP 1100m
Gee I really like the look of 7 Return With Honour (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) and I think he’ll give this fav something to chase. On debut for Gerald Ryan this colt and I was really taken by his trial last week at Hawkesbury. He went through his gears like a really nice horse and ran sizzling time under no real pressure. Drawn wide, but has early toe, comes over and is hard to run down.
2 Damaged (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is an Exceed And Excel colt for James Cummings that is having start one. He’s had just the one trial, which came at Kembla when a narrow second but looked to go about his business quite nicely and something in hand. Stable are starting to hum along with their juveniles and he draws a soft gate for the debut.
8 Giovanna Run (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a Press Statement filly on debut for Chris Waller. This girl has had just the one trial in readiness for her first day at the races, a 900m barrier trial at Rosehill, where she was on speed and though niggled, responded well and won the trial in handy enough time. Always have to respect the Waller stable and their two year olds when they look forward at the trials.
Race 2. (13:45) TAB PLATE 1300m
Better racing manners and 10 Celandine (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) looks the good thing on the program. James Cummings trains this filly, who debuted at Hawkesbury where she pulled hard off the pace, then when Glyn asked for an effort, she wanted to drift about under pressure and should have won when beaten narrowly by a good one in Fashchanel. That reads well I think and should just about take this out.
5 Rari (Bet Now: $2.45 TOP ODDS) is a very honest type for Greg Hickman that is bursting to win a maiden. He has finished a narrow second over 1400m in both runs back from a spell, the latest on the Kenso track when pipped near the peg by Mission Dream. He’ll run a strong 1300m here no doubt. The query will be does he have the change up speed in the legs.
13 Saigon (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is hard to beat here given the form around her. Loved her first up run at Gosford, closing off well from the back behind a good one in Instant Attraction. Second horse, Electric Girl, has won in town since, and the third horse, Crimlet, won at Newcastle on Saturday, so the form around her reads super and up to 1300m on the bigger track, she’s a key threat.
Race 3. (14:20) HYLAND BOXING DAY SALE HCP 1100m
Happy to be in the corner of 4 Aim For Perfection (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) for the Mark Newnham team. This mare hasn’t raced since July 6 over 1400m here when a solid third to Notation, who of course has gone right on with it to end up being Stakes placed, so that form reads very well for this and her recent Hawkesbury trial win was very good to the eye.
5 Adelong (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for Brad Widdup that is 2/2 to start her career, the latest coming over 1200m at Kembla and gee the win had plenty of merit. Copped pressure on speed and was there to be run down late but she showed really good ticker the last 100m to cling. Don’t mind her back to 1100m. Just depends if that last run busted her.
1 Unguarded (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has the weight but she does have class on her side and that will carry her a long way towards victory. Resumed in a similar race on the Kenso track at this trip and seemed to have her chance behind Worldly Pleasure, but perhaps she just needed the run. Like the booking of Nash, fitter and is better suited on the bigger track.
Race 4. (14:55) QUINCY SELTZER HCP 2400m
A step up in trip looks perfect for the John O’Shea trained 1 Nordic (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS). He was very good against the pattern two back at Kembla over 2000m behind Mr Reckless before stepping back to 1800m just under three weeks ago at Rosehill where he found them a bit sharp despite being disappointing on face value. Like him up in trip and has upside still I feel.
2 Quality Seeker (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is worthy of another chance I feel. Was really keen on him last time out on the Kenso track and on face value, you’d have to mark him down as very disappointing behind Miss Moana after getting a good sit behind the speed. The win prior at Hawkesbury was outstanding, so perhaps back in trip will help.
10 Kentucky Tornado (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is the one with the most upside. Chris Waller trains this mare, who has had two runs back from a break, the latest coming at the midweeks at Rosehill when a closing third to La Grisa, and actually clocked the best last 200m of the race. Off that, should eat up 2400m here and is one of the leading chances.
Race 5. (15:30) TAB HCP 1100m
Gee I think 14 Chat (Bet Now: $17.00) is a good gamble here. To my eye, he trialled so much better than Edison (Recent Saturday Winner) leading into his resumption at Wyong, a track I don’t think he was 100% happy on, but loved the way he found the line late behind Exceed The Stars and clocked some of the best late splits of the entire meeting. Bigger track, fitter, and up to 1100m, he’ll take some beating.
7 I Am Capitan (Bet Now: $6.00) has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell for the Gwenda Markwell stable. Plenty of merit in each outing, resuming at Kembla behind Trumbull before going to Rosehill when wide no cover on speed and just feeling the pinch late behind The Party Girl. Lands on speed here and provided he doesn’t spend too many petrol tickets early, he’ll take some beating.
If this becomes a hotly run 1100m contest, I’d be including 11 Three Sheets (Bet Now: $26.00) in wider multiples. Hasn’t raced since the Jungle Juice Cup back on October 28 at Cessnock on what was pretty much a concrete track and those off the speed for the day really struggled. Has run well at Randwick previously and the bit of give in the track compared to Cessnock will be perfect.
Race 6. (16:10) SUMMER CUP 2000m
Looks a lovely race for 6 Live And Free (Bet Now: $4.20) to find some winning form. How he didn’t win the Festival two back I do not know when pipped on the peg by Ranier. He then went to the Villiers and the run was inconclusive I thought. Just didn’t really get proper clear air to let down. Like him up to 2000m and this is a massive drop in grade/depth. Keen.
2000m form a tad suspect, but 5 Taikomochi (Bet Now: $7.50) does get conditions to suit on pace. Attempted to lead all the way in the ATC Cup at Rosehill where he got his own way in front before being asked to go 600m from home and the last 50m or so, he got the staggers and ran fourth. He should lead this field up. Just a query on how strong he’ll be at the end.
Will the 2400m under the belt toughen up 8 Emperor’s Way (Bet Now: $12.00) for this assignment? I think you’d have to say, for the most part, he’s been disappointing this prep. Latest run came over 2400m at Randwick in the Christmas Cup when fourth to Morton’s Fork and while he was held up, he was out in time to be dangerous but whacked away. That 2400m outing could well hold him in good stead for this.
Race 7. (16:50) OWERMANS OFFICE FURNITURE HCP 1600m
1×3/1×4 play here I think in the shape of 8 Zidane (Bet Now: $12.00). Had good specking when resuming over 1200m at Kembla where he was back near last in the run and spotting them a huge start, but closed off well late in the piece behind Adelong. For the most part, he was terrible last prep, but that resumption was encouraging and up to the mile I like but straight away to 1600m from 1200m is the query though.
With the scratchings, 1 Seeingisbelieving (Bet Now: $2.60) looks to get a really good time of it on speed and will be hard to run down. Resumed at the midweeks at Rosehill when settling just off the pace before being presented in the straight to win, only getting beat, just, by a handy one in Excellent Proposal. Should lead and prove hard to beat.
7 Showminder (Bet Now: $8.00) might well be looking for the mile after a couple of runs at 1400m where he has got back, found the line well without threatening but has been solid enough, the latest coming on the Kenso track behind Bandersnatch. Do like him at the mile and the form from the run two back behind Spencer is reading quite well.
Race 8. (17:30) SEPOY @ DARLEY HCP 1300m
Just can’t ignore the win from 10 Dubai Tycoon (Bet Now: $10.00) last week at Bathurst. Admittedly didn’t beat much, but it was the manner in which he won that impressed me, spanking his rivals over 1400m and smashing the track record, running amazing time relative to the meeting. He’s been excellent in two runs for Cav. Confident he measures up.
8 Cock Match (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Zoffany for the WaterBott stable that had nearly two months off prior to racing at the Rosehill midweeks where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick but just petered out of it the final few strides when third to Captain Stardust. Fitter, lands on speed, he’ll be hard to run down.
3 Blazing (Bet Now: $8.50) has to be given another chance. Had trialled up very impressively prior to resuming at Gosford where he was four wide no cover on speed for the trip and actually did a good job to stick on like he did behind the very promising Big Parade. Like him up in trip and the tick over trial last week was pretty good to the eye.
