The Sunshine Coast will host Queensland metro racing this Saturday where it is Sunshine Coast Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:27) Coastline BMW 3 Series Plate (Class 3) 1600m
Pretty keen here on the Matty Dunn trained 7 Saxton Rock (Bet Now: $2.45). Thought his effort last start over 1350m at Doomben was outstanding. Spotted them a start off a moderate tempo yet still found the line strongly to run third to Constant Flight. That form reads very well for this and now at the mile, on the bigger track, he looks one of the better bets on the card.
12 Pierre Bizel (Bet Now: $7.00) has been up a fair while for Stuart Kendrick but is racing well. Ran last Saturday at Eagle Farm where he was given a nice steer by Luke Tarrant and he gave the three year old every chance. Just wasn’t good enough when third to Takings. Like that he backs up immediately and is now back on his home track, where he saves his best for. Definite threat.
14 Kopella (Bet Now: $18.00) has earned another crack at metro level. 12/10 steer from Michael Murphy got her the win last time here, getting well back on the rail before getting the splits at the right time and the horse burst through, took the lead and clung on. Bit harder here, but these Tregea runners usually run well in town and she’s a horse with upside it would seem.
Race 2. (14:02) Coastline BMW X4 Handicap 2400m
These staying races always tricky to sort out with confidence so I don’t think it would take much improvement from the Group l winner 1 Capital Gain (Bet Now: $5.00) to figure in the finish. He’s teased a couple of times that he’s going to win another race but the moment you have that thought, he runs a shocker. I just think he got too far back last Saturday at Eagle Farm behind Art Attack. If he’s close enough on the turn, he’s certainly good enough.
The unknown is 3 Follow Suit (Bet Now: $3.10), who is third up for Chris Waller after two runs in Sydney to start the prep. Thought it was fitness that beat him first up at Warwick Farm but then next time out at Randwick, even though he was he;d up a touch in the straight, he was still a tad disappointing for mine. Significant drop in depth for him, he can win…but gee he’s hard to trust. Mind you, so are the majority of these.
8 Antigone (Bet Now: $21.00) could be an improver at odds. This Barry Lockwood trained mare got a win on the board two back at Beaudesert when on speed and too good for an average lot before racing at Eagle Farm last Saturday where she got back and was never in the hunt behind Art Attack. Has a liking for the Sunny Coast so an improved showing wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 3. (14:37) Coastline BMW 8 Series 2YO Classic Plate 1200m
I’ll side the way of race experience and 2 Alligator Blood (Bet Now: $2.60). Debuted at this track/distance on December 30 and despite doing a bit wrong in the run, he proved far too good and won impressively, and that form has been franked. Tick over trial last week here was good, got back, worked to the line nicely under no pressure and he’s got the run under the belt.
1 Stampe (Bet Now: $2.05) looks the main threat. Chris Munce trains this bloke, who has had three career outings and has gotten better each time he has stepped out, his last start coming at the midweeks on January 9 and he absolutely bolted in after sitting on speed. Think the bigger track will suit him even better and he does have the hard race fitness/experience under the belt.
6 Royalist (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Rochelle Smith trained filly who hadn’t been sighted in public prior to her debut at the Gold Coast over 1200m where she was relatively unwanted in betting but despite having no friends in the market, I thought she was impressive and put them away with purpose. Did that despite doing a bit wrong, so there’s room to improve and I think she has to be respected.
Race 4. (15:12) Coastline BMW X5 Handicap 1600m
3 Bold Warrior (Bet Now: $17.00) will do me. Gary Doughty trains this bloke, who has put together a decent little record in a short space of time. Ran over 1350m at Doomben on January 9 and worked home strongly from the back to run a narrow second to Sienna Rose. Off that run, the 1600m should be fine, and with cover, I think he’ll get back and have last look at them.
Tony Sears has done a fab job with 1 Barefoot (Bet Now: $3.10). Strong winner over 1800m at the Gold Coast before backing up a week later in the Guineas, coming back 400m in trip, and running a beauty in defeat when fourth to Boomsara. Back up to the mile looks ideal and that form is clearly A1 for this. What’s left in the petrol tank is the only query with her.
7 Red Stina (Bet Now: $4.60) steps up a fair bit in grade/depth, but there is a bit to like about this filly. Three weeks between runs before racing last Wednesday at Doomben over 1200m where she sprouted wings late from the back to get the win. Has placed in both runs at the mile and the form around those two races does read quite well for this, so don’t rule her out. Not a long shot, but $3.90 is rock bottom, so expecting it to ease.
Race 5. (15:52) Coastline BMW X7 Handicap 1000m
10 Sing Song (Bet Now: $15.00) looks a handy filly for the Matty Dunn team who I think can run well. Resumed at Lismore and put them away pretty quickly to win the maiden before racing on her home track at Murwilllumbah where she was wide no cover throughout and that cost her the win. Comes straight to town, which does look to be a good lead IMO.
1 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $4.00) is an absolute beauty for the Les Ross team that resumes. He was just so reliable during the Winter and early part of the Spring, consistently running well at this level and being placed superbly. Could have potentially run during the Summer Carnival, but dodged that and resumes here off the back of a quiet trial behind Capital Connection but he does seem a real race day animal.
8 Cailini (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Smart Missile filly for Tony Gollan that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since September 22 over this track/distance when running a close up second to Defence Missile, who was flying at the time. Interesting she resumes without a public trial, but was dynamic on debut last prep despite doing plenty wrong in the run. Keen to see how she goes.
Race 6. (16:32) Coastline BMW M Sport Handicap 1000m
Great to see 3 Tumbler (Bet Now: $4.60) back at the races. Quality mare for Barry Lockwood that resumes and she seems to have found an ideal kicking off point to get a first up win. She’s very explosive when right but has had her issues throughout her career. She’s back and gee her trial at Doomben was sharp. Loved the way she closed off under no pressure to run second to a good one in Capital Connection. I think if she’s right and not conceding a huge start, she’ll win.
7 Spurcraft (Bet Now: $3.60) is the interesting runner. Charlotte White trains this very good sprinter, who resumed at Ipswich and on face value, being a $1.50 favourite, he was terrible given the run he had in transit. But, I will say he was just a stride slow to begin and he’s a horse who seems to be at his best when leading and rolling along. If that eventuates here, he’ll take some beating.
5 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Kelly Schweida trained son of Dane Shadow resuming. He can be a bit hit and miss at times, but his best would clearly see him go close against this lot. He hasn’t raced since September 22 when down the track over 1400m here. Been given a good break and I thought he trialled up really well at Doomben behind Miss Toorak Flyer. He’ll be strong at the end.
Race 7. (17:12) Coastline BMW M2 Competition Handicap (75) 1200m
9 Ignite The Light (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who is a Saturday class horse and his confidence should be high after bolting up a couple of Wednesdays back at Doomben, leading all the way and dominating things nicely, running sizzling late time under hands and heels riding from Brad Stewart. 1200m at the Sunny Coast looks a tougher ask, but perhaps with cover, he’ll be dangerous.
2 Sword Of Justice (Bet Now: $9.50) hasn’t won in a little while but he does look well placed at this level. Ran in an open handicap at the Gold Coast three weeks ago where he was back in the run but finished off quite well behind Tyzone. Considerable drop in depth and draws much better. Has to rate highly.
7 Ragazzo Del Corsa (Bet Now: $11.00) definitely deserves a crack in town. John O’Sing trains this bloke at Rockhampton and I think he’s in near career best form as well. Was 1200-1050m last start at Rocky and he looked in a bit of trouble in the run, not looking like he’ll run down the leader, but he knuckled down and in the end class got him home. Does no work from the draw and is a knockout chance for sure.
Race 8. (17:47) Sunshine Coast Cup 1400m
8 Gaulois (Bet Now: $3.40) will do me. James Cummings trains this bloke, who comes through the Bernborough at Doomben where he just got too far back/wide in the run and was no chance from the 600m onwards but did a good job to get as close as he did to Bergerac. Big track, 1600m, nice trial under the belt and we all know the quality is there. Hopefully he can produce it.
4 Bergerac (Bet Now: $6.00) was a surprising yet impressive winner of the Bernborough before racing last Saturday over the mile at Eagle Farm where he was given a lovely ride by Michael Murphy but just found Emphasis a touch too good on the day. Tends to save his best for the Sunny Coast and the Tregea runners usually do well on the seven day turnaround.
Interesting runner is 1 Sovereign Nation (Bet Now: $9.00), formerly with the Hayes/Dabernig team but is now under the care of Matty Dunn. He was just a few lengths off Group l level when trained in Melbourne but did run well in a couple of really good races. Brings no public trials but has a touch of class on his side so I think he’s definitely one to watch here.
Race 9. (18:25) Coastline BM2 Z4 Handicap (0MW) 1400m
14 Mewstone Rock (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Symons/Laxon trained who is four weeks between runs since resuming at Doomben over 1200m where she got a mile out of her ground, as is the norm with her, and she finished off race quite strongly to run third to Brains who won last Saturday to frank the form. Good record on her home track and up to 1400m looks a big tick.
I’m hesitant to include 2 Coral Bay (Bet Now: $4.20), but his record on his home track is just outstanding. He ran last Saturday over 1400m at Eagle Farm and for mine, he was disappointing behind Braisn because he did get the inside split and was there to attack the line but he just whacked away when clear. Giving him another chance back on his home track.
10 Lulu Express (Bet Now: $8.00) has been going alright for Toby Edmonds in recent times, contesting far stronger races than what she lines up in here. Ran in a Class 6 on her home track at the Gold Coast last time and wasn’t beaten far behind a good mare and an in form one in Star Reflection. 1/1 at the track and the form around her does read well. $8/thereabouts looks a touch overs.
