Ten races will be run and won at Randwick on Saturday where it is Civic Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Civic Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Civic Stakes
Race 1. (11:00) Tab Highway Hcp (C2) 1400m
11 Sir Ravanelli (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) is a very promising animal for Terry Evans. 2/2 this time in, bolting up fresh at Grafton before going to Port Macquarie where he made a mess of them again in godo style. Both wins have come on testing tracks. Who knows, he could be better on top of the ground and be a nice horse. I’ll take a chance on him.
6 Bootscooter (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is a key threat for me. Ran in a 1500m Highway here two weeks ago and just got left a bit flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and was good in defeat in when second to Zadig. Back in trip could be a slight negative, but a good tempo should ensure she’s one of the strongest late.
8 Fighting Magnus (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a Graham Payne trained three year old that resumes. First up at 1400m tells me he’s forward enough to run well fresh, stable is in good form and I’d say the stable has eyes on a race like the Grafton Guineas, which is a couple of weeks away, so fitness levels should be around the mark. Watch the market and see what it does.
Race 2. (11:35) Schweppes (Bm72) 1600m
2 Indifference (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) has come back a nice horse. 2/2 this time in, winning the maiden fresh at Goulburn before repeating the dose with another impressive win at Newcastle. He’s too good for them at the Provincials. Comes to town, but the way he’s racing, confident he can measure up.
4 Deficit (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) should love the rise in distance for the Ryan/Alexiou camp. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Rosehill where he got back to near last in the run and worked to the line pretty well when second to dominant winner Niffler. Was good at the mile last run last prep and he was only second up last time, so there is room for improvement/upside.
6 Kalino (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is close to D-day for Chris Waller. Trialled up like Black Caviar prior to the first up run but I will say, both efforts this time in have been a bit on the plain side, so the jury is well and truly out on him, but he has the Waller polish and you can’t drop off…yet.
Race 3. (12:10) Midway (Bm72) 1100m
8 Conrad (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a fascinating watch. Kim Waugh trained son of Maurice that resumes, having not raced since Golden Eagle Day when down the track in the Four Pillars. Has had a good break, with a few trials to get ready, and to my eye, he’s ready to go. Market will tell you if indeed he’s ready.
13 Just Field (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS) is suited back to 1100m for Damien Lane. This mare hasn’t been too bad this time in, but she’s been plagued by either wet tracks or racing over a trip too far. She’s a dry track, short course type, so she gets conditions to suit and can run a much improved race.
4 McCormack (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Eurozone for Tracey Bartley that resumes. He hasn’t raced since April 1 at Muswellbrook when down the track in the Muswellbrook Cup behind Regal Stage. The form around him reads very well for this. Resumes without a trial, so watch the market.
Race 4. (12:45) Precise Air (Bm72) 1300m
Might be an off season 72, but this is the best race of the meeting. Plenty of talent on display, including 6 Po Kare Kare (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS). Not sure she beat a great deal at Gosford, but the arrogance of the win to round them up from last without being fully extended was something else. I am cautious that she beat pretty much nothing, but she’s always looked promising, so keen to see how she goes.
9 Bitcoin Baby (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) is third up from a break and should just about be at peak fitness. Ryan/Alexiou trained filly that has had a couple of runs back from a break and each time she has run well, but has raced like she will be better for the run. Third up from a break, she should be hard fit and maps ideally with intent from the jock.
3 Sacrimony (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1300m for Chris Waller. Solid effort two back behind Cotehele over this trip before coming back to 1200m and was good, but clearly no match for a very impressive Waihaha Falls. I think that form has to read well for this.
Race 5. (13:20) Quayclean (Bm78) 1800m
2 Flexible (Bet Now: $7.50) can be a big improver at odds. James Cummings trained mare that was several weeks between runs when racing in the Comme Bella Fille race from two weeks back here and I thought her effort was a pass mark given the ordinary set up. Much better suited here and she does have a touch of quality when right.
3 Comme Bella Fille (Bet Now: $2.70) has come back in super order for John O’Shea. This mare is 2/2 this time in, winning fresh on the Kenso before proving that was no fluke with a dominant win two weeks ago here. She’s a 2000m+ mare so the rise to 1800m from the mile is ideal and really, hard to ignore what she’s done this time in.
6 Lovetheinvasion (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Jason Deamer trained mare who is racing in career best form. Ran over 1900m at the midweeks at Canterbury last time and she looked all over a winner when she kicked, but was nabbed right on the peg by an in form Tinnie Winnie. She’ll jump on the bunny and try hard.
Race 6. (13:55) Stayer's Cup 2600m
Down in the weights, hard fit and with staying prowess with upside, I am in the corner of 8 Funambulist (Bet Now: $5.00). Annabel Neasham trained import that has done a pretty good job this time in, his last start being a dominant triumph at this trip at Gosford where he didn’t beat much but he lapped up the trip and ran through the line. I think he’ll eat up a hard 2600m and keep going.
6 Shameless Miss (Bet Now: $2.70) should have no issue with the trip after winning over 2400m at Warwick Farm last time out. I loved the ticker she showed to win because Our Candidate was there to run her down but she found and on the line, was holding that horse comfortably. Tumbles in weight, hard fit, in form, hard to beat.
5 Monreal (Bet Now: $12.00) is one for wider exotics. Ran in the Shameless Miss race from from the Monday meeting at Warwick Farm. He seemed to have his chance and battled away okay late in the piece when third to the Waller mare. Trip no issue and has been working up to a win for some time. Knockout hope.
Race 7. (14:30) Acy Securities (Bm88) 1800m
6 Francesco Guardi (Bet Now: $5.00) has come back in really good order for Chris Waller. J Mac rode him a peach to win three weeks ago at Eagle Farm, driving hard late nearer the inside and J Mac lifted him late to win. Tick over trial on Monday was good and up in trip, he’s the one for me.
2 Wairere Falls (Bet Now: $13.00) is racing like 1800m will suit. Chris Waller trains this gelding, who has raced over the mile his past few, the latest being two weeks ago here when back and making up some headway without threatening behind Cliff’s Art. I think 1800m is okay and form around him reads well.
9 Solar Apex (Bet Now: $3.50) is three weeks between runs for Chris Waller since racing over 1800m at Rosehill where they wanted to ride him forward but he was badly away and forced to settle last. He was never a threat but was good late behind Surf Dancer. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll take beating.
Race 8. (15:05) Civic Stakes 1400m
10 Grove Ferry (Bet Now: $9.00) on top but not a great deal of confidence, unless there is confirmation they will snag back from the wide gate rather than press forward. He did his best racing when ridden with a sit. Second prep for this import and we know these types do improve big time in their second prep. Trials have been great and off a good speed, can see him launching late.
9 True Detective (Bet Now: $9.50) doesn’t win out of turn but gee he’s a ripper for Chris Waller. He tried his guts out a fortnight back here but was just no match for a very much in form Coal Crusher. Was 1400m back to 1300m so I do think a rise back up to 1400m suits and he’ll be around the mark.
14 East Asia (Bet Now: $21.00) can bounce back. Several weeks between runs since contesting the Helen Coughlan where she got back to near last in the run and couldn’t get into the race behind Najmaty, who arguably should have won the Dane Ripper. Now with Joe Pride, we know he is just about #1 when it comes to improving a tried horse.
Race 9. (15:45) Petaluma (Bm78) 1100m
8 Irish Angel (Bet Now: $6.50) is bursting to win one. If you were on her back at Rosehill a few weeks back, apologies for bringing it back up. I think it’s safe to say that with proper clear air, she goes close to winning instead of a fourth to Per Inaway, getting no luck in the straight when seemingly full of running. Ready to win and is hard to beat here.
7 Hulk is Hulk… (Bet Now: $8.50) honest, tries hard but just can’t put it together on a consistent basis. Got a fair way back in the run a fortnight back here and despite never being a threat, he was good late, beaten just over two lengths. If he’s within range, he can be dangerous.
11 Broken Arrows (Bet Now: $71.00) is one I could include for wider multiples. Ran in the Siege race from two weeks back here where he got back in the run and just couldn’t get involved. I will say that he was five weeks between runs so there is room for improvement to run a better race at odds.
Race 10. (16:25) Elite Sand & Soil (Bm78) 1400m
I was assuming 8 Sinba (Bet Now: $3.50) would run in the Sunny Coast Guineas next Saturday given he ran at the midweeks at Doomben last time where he was ridden with intent from KWT and once he got the inside split, he went through his gears and he spanked them. The key looks to be getting back on top of the ground/firmer footing, and if he just holds the effort of last start, he’ll take beating.
5 For Valour (Bet Now: $6.00) looks to be in for a good prep. WaterBott trained gelding that resumed over 1200m at Rosehill three weeks ago where he was near the speed throughout and was there to win but being first up, condition just gave way late when third to Kingsheir. Fitter, up in trip, he’ll take beating.
18 Beaufort Park (Bet Now: $18.00) is flying for Saab Hassan that is bursting to win a race. He was very good late behind Jojo Was A Man two weeks back here, working home with real purpose from near last in the piece when fourth. If he’s within range and gets a drag into the race, he can be dangerous.
