A solid nine race card has been assembled for Belmont this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:53) Go Racing For Free Maiden 1200m
6 Winnie’s Wine is (Bet Now: $3.40) on top but it won’t be a race I’ll be investing in. This mare trialled up well prior to resuming over 1100m at Northam where she had a suck run nearer the inside before getting the cutaway and dashing hard late to run second to Sea Lake. Pike takes the ride which looks a good lead and up to 1200m, I think she’s a safe option re a tip, but not a betting race for me.
8 Kristella (Bet Now: $3.50) has had two runs back from a spell and hasn’t been far away each time she has stepped out. Was solid late down the Pinjarra straight first up before stepping up to 1300m at Northam when on speed and giving a reasonable kick but was held when third to Al Capitano. Like her back to 1200m and think she’ll be more effective with a sit.
3 Whole Lotta Shakin (Bet Now: $8.50) has had eight attempts to break his maiden, with the lone placing coming last time out at Pinjarra over 1300m when a close up third to Blue Sandgroper after getting a nice run just off the speed. Gets the claim and a soft draw, and back to 1200m I like. His runs this prep have been okay. Just not sure he’s a city maiden winner in waiting.
Race 2. (14:29) Westspeed Platinum Handicap (0MW) 1200m
7 Fairtrusive (Bet Now: $5.00) has been quite good in two runs back from a spell for Dan Morton. Thought she got a definite pass mark fresh behind Free Trade before racing over 1300m here two weeks ago when a close up third to Lookout. Third up, she should just about be ready re fitness and has place in both career runs third up. Just back to 1200m is the little niggle.
4 Sir Mambo (Bet Now: $2.40) is racing well at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for another win. Thought it would come last time out at this track/distance where he attempted to lead all the way but couldn’t quite finish it off when pipped near the peg by Three Secrets. He’s knocking on the door to win another race. Not sure it’s here, but he’ll run well all the same.
6 Lookout (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing for the third week in a row. Fast speed saw him win well here two back over 1300m before stepping back to 1200m last Saturday and just didn’t have the zip in the legs but was sound in defeat. On current form, he is really likeable. Just a query on whether or not he can back up, successfully, once again, especially in a race with depth which is what this has.
Race 3. (15:09) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Plate 1000m
I’ll take a punt on 6 Oristano (Bet Now: $7.00), who is on debut, and I think that’s a decent lead that a leading stable debuts a runner in town on a Saturday in an open plate for their age. This guy trialled down the Pinjarra straight last week and went like an absolute bomb in winning impressively, running time, and did it without being fully extended. He looks a nice prospect and confident he runs well here first up.
2 Massimo (Bet Now: $2.90) to make it 2/2. This Adam Durrant trained son of Sessions was confidently supported when debuting at this track/distance two weeks ago and despite doing a bit wrong early on in the straight, once he knuckled down, he put pay to them, produced good late splits and did it with a stack of improvement to come. Looks a good prospect and confident he wins again.
3 Amarillo Rose (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented filly who attempted to lead all the way two weeks ago first up here and she gave a decent enough kick but just felt the pinch late with her condition running out, finishing third to Massimo. You’d like to assume she’ll take good improvement off that re fitness and her form from the Autumn does read well enough to a win like this.
Race 4. (15:49) Vale Jack Cohen Handicap (1MW) 1000m
3 Glasgow Girl (Bet Now: $1.85) looks the winner. Lovely ride from Pike saw her win here two back before racing at this track/distance three weeks ago and it was just an awful watch if you were on. She was bolting but just had nowhere to go and she went around like a barrier trial behind the above average Essential Spice. Better luck this time around and I think she wins.
1 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $12.00) has to carry the weight but does have a bit of class on his side against these. He is five weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when on speed and tiring late when sixth to Don’t Fuss, beaten just over three lengths. He is a really good horse when produced with fresh legs and that was the first time in nine runs he didn’t run top three at the track/distance.
2 Akiko (Bet Now: $14.00) has been a ripping mare for Sarah Childs for a couple of seasons now and has now translated that to town. She was a beaten horse early on at this track/distance a fortnight back but she didn’t stop chasing and was very game in defeat when second to Shinju. The only knock with her is that while she has run well in town, yet to win.
Race 5. (16:29) Crown Perth Handicap (64+) 1200m
6 Shinju (Bet Now: $2.45) had been knocking on the door to win after two excellent runs back from a spell and the punters kept the faith last start, backing him with confidence, and they rewarded with a pretty dominant win, aided by a peach from McGruddy. He’s fourth up, so he should be hard fit now and draws once again to get a lovely run just off the pace.
8 Turbo Power (Bet Now: $9.00) was an impressive winner at Kalgoorlie two back before racing at this track/distance where he just went too keen in the run early on and had nothing left for the straight when sixth to Little Fish, who had a dream sit near the speed and proved too good. I think if he can relax a bit better in the run this time around, he can bounce back for sure.
7 Lofty Lad (Bet Now: $20.00) is a huge query. He’s a talented animal when right but it’s been a little while since he has showed that. Hasn’t raced since March 30 at Ascot when down the track behind the then flying Special Reward. Resumes without a trial but stable can do that and produce them to win first up, as we saw recently with Bel My Pago. Keen to see how he goes.
Race 6. (17:09) Ian Riley 60th Birthday Handicap (1MW) 1400m
7 Kia Ora Star (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a really good gamble here. He was one of the runs of the day when resuming over 1400m here two weeks ago, settling near last in the run before being forced very wide on the turn, losing momentum, but picked up and was excellent late when third to Blackwood River, with his late splits clearly being the best in the race. Keen on him here.
6 Beauty Kanas (Bet Now: $10.00) is a former Sydney sider who has done a good job since coming to WA. He comes through the Blackwood River from a fortnight ago where he was another suited by the good speed and finished off strongly, but couldn’t quite get the job done when a narrow second to the Miller galloper. Would prefer him over a tad further but hard to beat all the same.
9 Regal Counsel (Bet Now: $8.50) deserves another crack in town. Peter Fernie has this bloke flying high with confidence having won his past two at his home track at Kalgoorlie in dominant fashion, proving far too good for his rivals. Good test for him now to see if he can measure in town once again because once upon a time he did. Stable flying in town recently too.
Race 7. (17:45) Amelia Park Handicap (76+) 2100m
3 At The Ready (Bet Now: $5.00) hasn’t won in over a year but I reckon a victory isn’t far away. He comes through the Mr Alby race from a few weeks ago where he was wide throughout, with cover, and tried hard, but couldn’t quite get there and had to settle for a fourth to the Paula Wagg trained stayer. He wants a strong tempo in front because he’s a pure stayer. If that happens, he can win.
13 Spiritual Warrior (Bet Now: $4.00) is a horse I was keen on running well at odds when over 2000m here two weeks ago and under a lovely ride from Paul Harvey, he just kept finding and edged them out late for a tough and gritty win. Consistency isn’t his strong point, but I don’t see a great deal of depth here and he just has to hold his form to be competitive here.
2 Gunnago (Bet Now: $12.00) comes through the Spiritual Warrior race from a fortnight back here. He got a fair way off the speed but produced some of the quickest splits of the race between the 800m-200m, before feeling the pinch late given it was his first go over a staying trip. You’d like to think he’ll improve big time with that run under the belt and is a definite threat.
Race 8. (18:25) Peninsula Mile (76+) 1650m
Finding it hard seeing other than a win for 10 No Say In It (Bet Now: $8.00). Was on him at this track/distance two weeks ago and helped by a nice steer off the speed from Knuckey, he really attacked the line late and was far too good for his rivals, with his late splits clearly being the best in the race. Just has to repeat that and I think he’ll be getting the job done again.
Michael Lane has continually asked 9 Free Trade (Bet Now: $4.20) to raise the bar and the horse has done it superbly this time in. He looked in a bit of trouble over 1400m here last Saturday 200m from home when Neurologcial was coming back, but the horse dug in and on the line, he was holding his rivals. 1600m is a different pain barrier, but why not try him now given how well he’s going.
8 Missile Launch (Bet Now: $13.00) has been going okay this time in and was good to see him find some positive form last time out. Carbery rode the galloper a bit closer in the run, doing a bit of work to get him outside the speed and he looked to travel well, giving a good kick in the straight but was no match late for No Say In It. With a more economical run, he can run well again.
Race 9. (19:05) Jesse & Sarah's Mongol Derby Recognition Handicap (64+) 1650m
Pretty ordinary race to close out the card. 10 Early Explorer (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the one on the up. This four year old ran over 1400m at Pinjarra just over two weeks back, sitting well off the speed before peeling wider and letting down strongly to get the job done, clocking some decent late splits in the process. Heading in the right direction and up to the mile should be fine.
3 Bold Success (Bet Now: $6.00) just has to repeat his last start effort at this track/distance to go close. He was wide no cover two weeks ago on what was a solid tempo and was entitled to drop away and run near last, but he kept finding and was very good in defeat behind the in form Snowchino. Draws much better and the depth here is nowhere near as strong.
One thing we know with 4 Beaucount (Bet Now: $7.50) is that if you back him, you’ll get a great run for your money. He sat on a solid speed at this track/distance two weeks ago and fought on strongly when second to Snowchino. He tends to race best when leading by himself and rolling at a good tempo. If that eventuates here, he’ll prove very hard to run down.
