Queensland metro racing this Saturday heads to Doomben for a nine race program. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:23) Tab Venue Mode Hcp 1050m
I’m very interested in 7 Hamlet Von Snitzel (Bet Now: $3.90). Natalie McCall trained colt that comes here off the back of what I thought have been a couple of sharp trial wins on his home track at the Sunny Coast, the latest being last Tuesday, winning by a space and running good time for the morning. Stable isn’t really known as one to follow with juveniles but this bloke looks talented.
The lead here looks to be via 11 Mystic Gem (Bet Now: $3.90). Kris Lees trained filly that was scratched from what looked a moderate maiden at Wyong on Wednesday to run here. She has had one trial to prepare for start one and looked pretty good there. Draws soft and think she’s a leading chance in an even contest.
10 Mishani Enchanted (Bet Now: $5.50) can be dangerous at odds. Comes through the Pearl at the Gold Coast two weeks ago when back near last in the run and working home quite well late in the piece behind Swift Witness. If she can hold up from the inside gate, she’ll be a winning threat.
Race 2. (13:58) Hellbent At Inglis Classic Hcp 1600m
Think if this track does dry out, which I think it will, then clearly in the corner of 2 Ligulate (Bet Now: $2.15). Somewhat outclassed three weeks ago in The Buffering but he was good late without threatening behind Soxagon, who went so well last Saturday, so think that is the right form and up to the mile is a big tick.
3 Prometheus (Bet Now: $2.80) is the big query here. He was a notable late drifter in betting when racing at the Gold Coast two weeks back and the market got it right. He was tardy away, back near last in the run and found nothing in an ordinary effort. He’s better than that and prior form was good enough to beat these.
On paper, back to the mile with 1 Le Juge (Bet Now: $13.00) is an interesting one, but the record says that five of his ten career wins have come over the mile, so I actually think it is a positive. Last run over 2000m behind Get Stuck In was just fair, but this is a drop in overall depth/grade and his best is good enough.
Race 3. (14:33) Mount Franklin (bm72) 1600m
11 Gunnobe (Bet Now: $7.00) can bounce back into the winners list. Lindsay Hatch trained mare that was an impressive first up winner at Ipswich before going to Eagle Farm where she seemed to have her chance but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Splendorinthegrass. Third up, hard fit now and this race is considerably weaker.
7 Smart Meteor (Bet Now: $5.50) probably hasn’t gone on with his promise from when he was three years of age, but he does find a winnable race here if he finds anything near his best. Wasn’t too bad late last time out at this track/distance and should get a lovely run in transit from the gate.
10 Drumadoir (Bet Now: $19.00) is a very interesting runner. Has shown city class ability since day one but at times has been very inconsistent. The resumption over 1200m here was very encouraging, working home strongly from the back when third to Soubrette. Straight to the mile is interesting but she has a good second up record.
Race 4. (15:12) Sky Racing Plate (c3) 1200m
10 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now: $5.50) deserves another chance. Resumed with a narrow second at Eagle Farm behind Shooting For Gold before going to the Gold Coast where the market didn’t want a bar of her and she ran up to that when down the track behind Stolen Jade. That’s good form for this and draws to get run of the race.
Can you trust 1 Garibaldi? (Bet Now: $2.25) I think you can now. Somewhat lucky to win two back at the Sunny Coast, but there was nothing lucky about his win last time out here. He was on speed and gave them a belting in an impressive display. Comes here with fresh legs and being kept to these lesser class races I do like.
Keen to see 6 Dixon Bay (Bet Now: $18.00) resume. Gillian Heinrich trained gelding that is first up, having not raced since Feb 23 at the Sunny Coast when a game second to a pretty solid veteran in Fabulonh. Trialled up very nicely at the Gold Coast to get ready, so I think watch the market and see what it does.
Race 5. (15:52) Millers Swim School Hcp 1200m
3 Batangas Entry (Bet Now: $3.20) gets one last chance for me. Was trying to get a spot in the Magic Millions via a win in a lead up, but he didn’t measure up at all in the Gold Edition and Vo Rogue. This looks more his level and if you go off his form last prep, he’s a definite winning chance against these.
Want this track to dry out for 1 Derulo (Bet Now: $5.50) because he does look like a horse that needs a firm surface. Has had two runs for John Smerdon and has been solid each time, resuming with a second here before going to the Gold Coast a fortnight back and was somewhat disappointing. Hoping for an aggressive ride, finding the front and proving hard to get past.
11 Bundyandcoke (Bet Now: $26.00) is still a maiden but think he’s one to include in wider multiples. Debuted over this track/distance where he got back to near last in the run and worked home strongly without threatening when third to He Knows. He’ll get back to near last in the run and work home strongly.
Race 6. (16:32) Kirin Hcp 1200m
8 Satine (Bet Now: $6.50) is flying and I have been impressed by her two wins this prep, both at 1200m and each start she has run good time in winning from near the front, the latest being at Ipswich where she was there to be run down but powered clear at the end. Tricky race, but hard to knock the way she’s going.
The query with 2 Bleu Zebra (Bet Now: $3.10) is stretching her brilliance to the six furlongs. She was electric last time out over 1050m here when on speed and charging clear late to win and win well in very fast time. If she can run a strong 1200m with that change up speed still effective, she’s hard to beat.
7 Red Wabbat (Bet Now: $61.00) should be suited up to 1200m for Rex Lipp. Just needed the run fresh over 800m at Ipswich before going to 1100m at Gatton where she got back and worked home strongly late in the piece behind a city performer in Five Oxford. If she’s within range on the turn, she’s good enough.
Race 7. (17:12) Tab Live Sky Vision (bm80) 2000m
Fitter and up in trip I see as a big positive for the Chris Waller trained 5 Mangione (Bet Now: $8.00). He has had two runs back from a spell, both coming here, the latest being over the mile when initially flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and was solid late. Gets to a more ideal trip and has quality when right.
11 Makedon (Bet Now: $8.50) is progressive and heading in the right direction. He should be suited up in trip after producing the goods last time out over the mile at the Sunny Coast, finishing best in a driving go. He’s been looking like a stayer for some time and now he gets to that sort of trip.
3 Torrens (Bet Now: $9.50) has been up a fair while for Ethan Ensby but is finding some decent positive form at the moment. Dominant winner two back at Eagle Farm before going here where he loomed to win and looked the winner for a couple of strides, but was nabbed late by Happy Go Plucky. Hard to beat.
Race 8. (17:48) Gallopers Sports Club (bm90) 1200m
8 Socialising (Bet Now: $4.00) is three weeks between runs for Tony Gollan since racing in the Nudgee at Eagle Farm where she was back near last in the run and never really a winning threat, but did make up ground and was a definite pass mark behind Athiri. That clearly has to read well for a race like this.
1 Inquiry (Bet Now: $11.00) can easily win this without surprising. Both runs back from a break have been plain, but he hasn’t been placed to advantage. Resumed at the Gold Coast and needed the run before going to the Falvelon where she found the class a bit much. If he can find the front here and get control, he’ll take some running down.
7 High Cost (Bet Now: $10.00) can add some value to wider multiples. Resumed over 1000m at Eagle Farm and was good late despite never really being a winning threat. Does no work from the draw and can be a sneaky first four hope.
Race 9. (18:25) Brc Membership Renewal (c6) 1350m
11 Roman Aureus (Bet Now: $4.60) saves his best for Doomben so giving him one more chance. He ran at the Gold Coast two weeks back where he was tardy away and settled off the speed. Did make ground but was never really a winning threat behind Fisticuffs. Back to Doomben, one last chance.
1 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $6.00) looks much better suited at this level. Thrown in the deep end fresh in the Buffering and was just outclassed behind Soxagon. This looks a more suitable assignment for him and start prior, he gave them a belting at this track/distance. Think he’s one of the hardest to beat.
12 Baroda (Bet Now: $4.20) has done little wrong this time in. Impressive winner fresh at the Gold Coast before going to Eagle Farm. Ridden positively by Cahill to sit near the speed and she gave a good kick when asked for the big effort but the 59kg impost just got to her late when a tiring but close up fourth to Splendoronthegrass. Better suited here and can win.
