Blacktype racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday, with the Tokyo City Cup (1800m) and Whylie Handicap (1100m) the features. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:21) Spring Carnival Maiden Plate 1100m
11 Just Zerene (Bet Now: $1.55) should be putting these away. Talented filly for the McEvoy camp who was of course at the centre of ‘Text Gate’ during the Brisbane Summer Carnival where she was regarded as a better horse than Sunlight. Didn’t quite come to plan, but she showed enough to suggest she’s above average and her recent Flemington jumpout was outstanding.
5 Outpost (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Reward For Effort colt resuming for David Tootel. This three year old hasn’t raced since debuting over 1050m here back in January when beating one runner home in a field of four but the winner was Sizzlefly, who has since gone on to be very competitive in some nice races in Melbourne. Liked the recent trial behind a good one in Garner and I think outside the fav, he’s the bet.
1 Clearly Adonis (Bet Now: $15.00) can be an improver here. Had good form in the Autumn, which saw him as a leading chance when resuming in a Gawler maiden and while on face value, he was poor, he was found to be lame post race, so he had excuses for the below par. Has form around Absolute Flirt and Li’l Kontra from the Autumn, which reads well for this.
Race 2. (13:56) Happy 21st Isabelle Tassone Handicap 1100m
If 1 Beauty (Bet Now: $1.90) brings her form from around this time last year, she’ll be beating this lot. This mare had four runs during the Autumn Carnival and for the most part, she was very disappointing, a shadow of what she showed during the Spring last year, which saw her win a Stakes race on Cox Plate Day. Her Cranbourne trial win was sharp and maybe she’s just a Spring horse? Time will tell.
4 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $12.00) is a daughter of Hard Spun resuming for Darren Magro. This mare had a busy Summer/Autumn, which included a couple of sharp wins, but by the end, she was a tired horse and looking for the paddock. Usually sprints well fresh and her recent Gawler trial win was good. She’ll likely get back in the run and look to ambush them late.
8 Lady Bethany (Bet Now: $7.50) is a former kiwi mare for Michael Hickmott that resumes. This girl had a few runs for Hickmott towards the end of last prep, winning two on the bounce, including a win on the Parks track, before being tipped out, and I love horses that go for a spell with confidence sky high. 1100m is short of her best, but stable last couple of weeks is finding form.
Race 3. (14:31) Fleurieu Milk Company Handicap 2014m
I like 3 Franked (Bet Now: $11.00) on the seven day turnaround. Didn’t mind his chances at odds last Saturday over the mile here and I thought he worked to the line pretty well against the pattern of the day when third to stablemate Cannot Be Serios. Yet to do the quick back up in Australia but stable is having a good run recently and he finds a really winnable race.
7 Shop Til I Drop (Bet Now: $2.60) is flying at the moment. Looked in awful trouble two weeks ago on the Parks track but a bit of Vorster magic saw the mare weave her way through the ruck and then get clear air, finishing right over the top of her rivals for another impressive win. Can she do it on the course proper as she just starts to creep up in the weights? I think so.
5 Dr Dependable (Bet Now: $6.50) is racing well for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. Tough, tough win over the mile at Murray Bridge two back before racing over 1950m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he seemingly got a soft lead and for mine, I thought he had his chance when third to Shop Til I Drop. Has placed over a staying trip before so up to 2000m no issue.
Race 4. (15:06) Patrick Jarrett Handicap (75) 1200m
Any sort of market push for 4 Winning Partner (Bet Now: $4.50) and I’ll be all over him. He’s got these covered on ability/form. Hasn’t raced since the Adelaide Autumn Carnival over the mile here when a fast finishing fifth to So We Are. Tends to save his best when produced with fresh legs and loved the way he closed off in a recent Flemington jumpout. Keen on him.
6 Magna Bella (Bet Now: $3.00) had been bursting to win a race this time in for Will Clarken and that win did come impressively two weeks ago, sitting on speed before being clicked up and away she went for a dominant win. Looks to be more depth to this field but now she has the win on the board, her confidence should be sky high and she can go on with it.
9 Street Life (Bet Now: $21.00) returns to Adelaide after a three run prep during the Darwin Carnival where he won at start one before a couple of solid efforts afterwards, including a solid fourth on Cup Day against the track pattern. Form prior here was very good and draws to get clear air from the outset and find the line. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 5. (15:46) Tokyo City Cup 1800m
8 Single Handed (Bet Now: $23.00) on top. Nick Smart trains this gelding, who was specked at odds when resuming at Bendigo last Wednesday and while he was clearly no match for the very impressive Tavidance, he produced good late splits and took ground off the winner late. Looks suited up to 1800m, has a stack of upside and in a race without a great deal of early speed, he can go forward.
2 Brown Ben (Bet Now: $8.50) has been a beauty for the McEvoy stable for a while and he got another win on the board last Wednesday in the Balaklava Cup, aided by an absolute peach of a steer from an in form Cory Parish, who got the suck run on the rail before angling into clear air in the straight and eventually wore down Waging War. Up to 1800m looks ideal and has room for improvement.
3 Wasabi Bob (Bet Now: $20.00) could add some value to exotics. He was good over the mile two back here when second to Tatoosh before going to the Balaklava Cup last Wednesday where he did a power of work to land on speed and had nothing left for the straight when down the track behind Brown Ben. Up to 1800m will suit. Just depends how much did that run take out of him.
Race 6. (16:26) ATA Trainers Trust Handicap (66) 1100m
7 The Difference (Bet Now: $3.00) for me. The McEvoy stable trains this four year old who has two career outings, both at Murray Bridge. Gave them a spanking on debut before being freshened up. Raced there again when wide throughout in a solid effort when second to Thompson’s Reward, but that doesn’t help punters who took the $1.24. He looks above average and confident he can bounce back.
1 Thompson’s Reward (Bet Now: $7.50) had been bursting to win a race for some time and he finally got it last start at Murray Bridge, getting the suck run nearer the inside before angling into clear air and savaging the line late to get the job done. He’s always showed that kind of talent but it hadn’t translated to a win until last time. Hopefully he can go on with it.
3 Aussie Jack (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Shayne Cahill trained galloper that was really well backed when resuming at Mildura and once Cahill presented him clear air at the top of the straight, he looked the winner, only to be bloused late by By The Pound in an excellent win from that horse, but Aussie Jack was far from disgraced in running second. Draws out, but should get decent cover and launch late.
Race 7. (17:06) W H Whylie Handicap 1100m
This is just about D-Day for 15 Schilldora (Bet Now: $10.00). Talented mare for the Jolly camp that has been rather disappointing this time in considering she raced at a much higher level when last in work. Raced over the 1250m on the Parks track three weeks ago where she led, looked to get a cheap lead and on the turn, it looked game over, but she couldn’t finish it off when third to Handsome Return. D-Day.
5 Soothing (Bet Now: $2.70) has been truckloaded and understandably so given James Cummings more often than not places his horses beautifully when on the road, and this mare finds a very winnable race to get some blacktype. Ran second to Mizzy first up in the Toy Show at Randwick and of course that form was franked last Saturday. Recent trial behind Classique Legend was good, draws well, down in the weights…all points to her. Been over a year since she has won is the concern to warrant taking the short odds.
10 Benz (Bet Now: $31.00) is a Gordon Richards trained six year old that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since the Christmas Handicap back in December when down the track behind Princess Of Queens where he had every chance but couldn’t finish it off. Has had a good long break and thought his trial at Gawler was very good, so interesting to see what the market does.
Race 8. (17:46) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (75) 1600m
I had something on 4 Stealthy Lucas (Bet Now: $10.00) first up at the Valley a few weeks ago and while he only beat one runner home, his effort was much better than that. Got into a good spot early on in the race, but as the race progressed, it ended up being a nasty spot and from the home turn onwards, it was an ugly watch. Had jumped out well prior to that so giving him another chance.
11 Allusion (Bet Now: $2.70) is a key chance. The McEvoy stable trains this four year old, who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming at Murray Bridge but looked a bit one paced and that cost him in the end when second to Escalator. Think the rise to 1600m will suit him ideally even though he looks a 2000m+ horse, but has a touch of class/quality about him.
6 Dollar Dollar Bill (Bet Now: $35.00) should welcome the drop in class/depth after contesting the Balaklava Cup last Wednesday where he just found the class of that race too much when down the track behind Brown Ben. Benchmark racing is his go so back to a 75 I think will suit and his couple of runs prior suggested a win wasn’t far away. Perhaps it will come here.
