An eight race card has been set down for Ascot this Saturday where is Ascot 1000 Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:48) Dolores Oberman 90th Birthday Handicap (64+) 1600m
I think 6 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $18.00) is working up to a win. Whether it’s here or something easier, I’m not sure, but if we can get a decent price about him, I want to have something on each way. Had little to no luck in his first two runs for the prep before racing here last Wednesday where he lumped the big weight and closed off very well without a great deal of room early on in the straight. Gets really good weight relief and that was his first run in a month so there’s room to improve.
Thought 3 New Age (Bet Now: $3.40) did a really good job to win first up over 1700m at Bunbury for Adam Durrant. She came into that race with a couple of soft-ish trials under the belt but was strongest on the line after getting a lovely 1/1 sit courtesy of Pike, who remains on. Second up syndrome is a query, but she’s got the most upside of any runner here and rates highly.
Interested to see what 4 Not Again Ken (Bet Now: $26.00) does here fresh for Mark Wright. He’s a very hot and cold galloper who could easily run well here if he produced something near his best. Has had two trials to prepare for his return, once in December before being freshened up and has since had a Lark Hill trial over 950m where he looked pretty good. Doubt he wins, but could be one for wider multiples.
Race 2. (16:28) Eddy Turisini 60th Birthday Handicap (1MW) 1000m
1 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $7.00) has to carry the grandstand but gee he’s racing well and is a proven weight carrier. Ran over this track/distance last Saturday where he was back and wide in an on pace dominated affair and closed off really well in defeat behind the impressive Fabergino. I think he’s going really well and a win isn’t far away. Just hope he can be within range on the turn.
9 Rapisarda (Bet Now: $5.00) is the x factor. Tameeka Brown trains this gelding, who has been outstanding in three runs back from a break, winning all three impressively, two of those being at Narrogin with a Bunbury win in the middle. He puts himself into a good spot, has a decent turn of foot and doesn’t mind having a dig when challenged. Hardest test to date here, but has to be respected.
The unknown is clearly 3 Kennedy (Bet Now: $6.00), a former Godolphin galloper making his WA debut for Chris Gangemi. Did show good promise when racing in Sydney/Melbourne but for the most part just couldn’t quite measure up and was disappointing. Now finds a new home in WA, resumes without a trial but he’s a huge yard/market watch. If he’s right, he goes close to winning.
Race 3. (17:08) Happy Birthday Philip Botsis Handicap (76+) 1100m
4 Neurological (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Martin Allan trained sprinter who is in career best form at the moment. He contested the feature sprint at Geraldton last time and under a confident steer from Pike, he showed a good turn of foot when asked for the effort and proved too good. Harder here, but he’s a horse that’s going well and does tend to race really well when produced on the fresh side.
7 Captain Stirling (Bet Now: $2.70) is an absolute speed demon for the Roy Rogers team who was a beaten short priced fav here two back before backing up a week later down the Pinjarra (Metro) straight and he absolutely bolted in with his sustained speed coming to the fore. Can he translate that back to a bending track against the big boys? Have to wait and see.
3 Dam Ready (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Mark Bairstow trained gelding who is racing so well at the moment. On the seven day back up after racing here last Saturday, where he didn’t get a great deal of luck in the straight in what turned out to be quite a sticky race when fifth to Seeker, beaten two lengths. Fast run 1100m looks right up his alley and noteworthy that Britt Taylor said last week that this horse was looking the best he’s looked this prep, so perhaps there’s improvement to come.
Race 4. (17:43) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (1MW) 1400m
Straight out of maiden grade but I think 9 Family Discussion (Bet Now: $7.00) can continue his winning ways. The maiden win came over 1200m here a fortnight ago where he was given a lovely ride from Parnham and when the gaps appeared, he took them and dashed away late for an impressive win. You could say harder here, but there are some stragglers here who haven’t won in a while, so it’s an ideal race to test him at this level.
4 Zetorio…(Bet Now: $5.00) where did that first up run come from? Was $101 when resuming in the 3YO Magic Millions at Pinjarra and despite doing a bit wrong in the run, he charged to the line with purpose and just missed out on the win when second to Samizdat. Repeats that here and he probably wins…but he can mix his form, so I’d want to see him do it before stepping in.
5 The Escort (Bet Now: $26.00) has had two runs back from a spell for the Justine Erkelens stable. Resumed with a brilliant win over 1200m here from the back before remaining at the same track/distance and racing a touch flat behind Athlete. Staying at 1200m last time probably beat him so up to 1400m third up, he should be ready fitness wise, and this isn’t a strong race.
Race 5. (18:19) D'Orsogna Handicap (64+) 1200m
I’ll give 3 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $15.00) another look. I think you have to forget the run last Saturday. Nothing really went right for the kid along the rail and the horse seemingly took charge. The run wasn’t too bad in the end. Chris Parnham takes over and he’s drawn out, so hopefully can get clear and build into his work in what is a very winnable race for this veteran.
6 Macroy (Bet Now: $3.80) just has to run the 1200m and he’s the likely winner. Bruce Watkins has him in career best form at the moment, winning his past three, all coming over the 1000m here when ridden a treat and getting the job done. Now has to stretch that to 1200m and there is a bit of depth to this field, but it’s very likeable the way he’s going about his business at the moment.
I’ll be interested to see how 2 See Me Sizzle (Bet Now: $18.00) goes first up for Team Williams. He hasn’t raced since August 9 on a bog track at Pinjarra where he didn’t appear happy on the surface and also was probably a tired horse after a long prep. Been given a good break and the two trials leading in haven’t been too bad. Could be worth something small each way.
Race 6. (18:55) Ascot 1000 Guineas 1800m
Looks a really good race for the Adam Durrant trained 1 Assetro (Bet Now: $5.00). She resumed in the Challenge a fortnight ago where she got back, peeled to the outside and let down hard, looking the winner, but I reckon her condition just gave way late, yet still clocked some very good late splits, suggesting she’ll improve off the run and up in trip a big tick, which she gets here.
5 Adornment (Bet Now: $2.20) is a Team Williams trained filly who is showing good promise. Broke the maiden at this track/distance back on Feb 13 when sitting behind the speed, pulling a fraction but always looked in control and when Pike asked for the big effort, the response was good and she won drawing clear. Harder here, but she’s in the right stable and heading in the right direction.
9 Dark Choice (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented filly for the Williams camp who is a veteran of just one start. That came in a Bunbury maiden on Feb 14 where she got a mile off them in the run but finished off with real purpose to run second to Utgard Loki. Straight to Stakes grade and straight to 1800m, especially with the stable, is usually a good sign they have an opinion of the horse.
Race 7. (19:25) Lex Piper Stakes 1600m
6 Regal Power (Bet Now: $2.40) can turn the tables here on stablemate Creative Hero. They ran 1-2 in the Challenge from a fortnight ago, with the latter getting the win, largely thanks to a 12/10 from Pike, who waited and waited to let down, knowing Regal Power was in the pocket. That horse should have won, and now out to the mile, with a 2kg weight swing, I think he can get his win.
That’s to take nothing away from 1 Creative Hero (Bet Now: $6.00). He’s done a really good job this time in. Has won his past three, the latest being the Challenge when given a sweet steer just off the pace from Pike and once let down, he showed the turn of foot to get the win, albeit just. Just has to stretch that brilliance to 1600m. If he can, clearly a winning chance.
8 Classic Jack (Bet Now: $27.00) is a son of Frost Giant for the Roy Rogers stable who really creates interest here. He has won his past two starts, both coming at Albany over a staying trip against the older horses, which is always such a good sign for a young horse when they can beat the older gallopers. Coming back in trip from 2100m, so whatever he does here, he’ll improve on, and likely has eyes on the WA Derby, but he’s talented.
Race 8. (20:00) Kirin Megumi Handicap (70+) 1400m
Want to be with 7 Forceful (Bet Now: $3.10) here. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since contesting a 1200m event at Pinjarra (Metro) where nothing really went right for him in the straight in what I thought was a bit of a forgive run behind Alpha Sky, who franked the form by bolting up next time. The run/win prior over 1200m here was a beauty so perhaps he’s indeed looking for 1400m.
1 Freo (Bet Now: $5.00) is the huge query. Best horse in the race by a mile but it’s just a matter of where he is at fitness wise. Could have run in the Railway given he won the Peters but they skipped that and he contested the Carbine Club where he was enormous from the back behind Pinzu. No trials leading into his return, but has class/quality on his side and that will carry him a long way.
3 Mizlecki (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Fred Kersley trained mare who produced a fab return to the races over 1400m here a fortnight ago. Never really a winning threat behind dominant winner Alpha Sky but did take off really good ground and her late splits were very good. Might want further now, and the second up syndrome query is there, but hard to ignore the resumption.
