Nine races will be run and won at Ascot on Saturday, headlined by a couple of key races with lead ups towards the Karrakatta Plate. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:23) Belhus Racing Stables (bm62+) 1000m
4 State Of Power (Bet Now:Β $4.60) on top in the opener. This girl is on the seven day back up after a strong win last Saturday over this track/distance, surging hard from off the speed to get the job done. Should get good speed in front again and get her chance to launch over the top.
5 Metallon (Bet Now:Β $2.25) is a tick over two weeks between runs for Todd Harvey since a strong on speed win here where he was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure, fended them off and was too good. More depth here, but confident he can measure up.
7 No Dice (Bet Now:Β $17.00) has done little wrong in three runs from a spell. Tick over a month between runs since getting the job done at Belmont where she sat near the speed and found plenty under pressure to score. That was at 1200m so I do think fresh legs back to 1000m is okay.
Race 2. (16:08) Tabtouch - Westspeed (rs0ly) 1400m
5 Gold Merits (Bet Now:Β $4.4.0) is flying this time in for Jim Taylor and happy to be with her again. Was with her two weeks ago here but she just got a bit too far out of her ground, but was good late when fourth to Native Chimes. If the inside gate can be used to advantage, I think she’ll only run well.
7 Gallant Ranger (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is a Michael Lane trained gelding that comes back to 1400m after racing over 1500m here in the Native Chimes race mentioned above when just off the speed and I thought he had his chance when a close up third. He is racing honestly though and should be around the mark.
1 Fred Dag (Bet Now:Β $21.00) is another that comes through the Native Chimes. I thought he too had his chance but he wasn’t too bad in defeat for a horse who doesn’t have the best of records at the track. Drawn wide, but has the claim for Stanley and could be dangerous if he gets a drag into the race.
Race 3. (16:49) Ascend Sales Trophies (bm66+) 1600m
I want to give 1 Tinsnip (Bet Now:Β $19.00) another chance. He has been terrible this time in but I will say that his past couple, he has got way too keen in the run. With Holly Watson steering, my advice would be that holding up and getting him pulling isn’t working. Let him stride and roll on speed, and see what eventuates.
2 Crescent City (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is a beauty for Grant Williams who had been knocking on the door to win one and it came two weeks ago here, helped by a lovely ride from Stanley, saving the ground nearer the inside and driving hard late to score. Bit more depth here, but hard to knock the way he’s racing.
3 Big Bada Boom (Bet Now:Β $4.80) is on the seven day back up for Roy Rogers after racing here last Saturday when keen on speed and tired late when down the track behind Blazing Away. That was over 2100m so back to the mile I find interesting. His best is good enough to be dangerous.
Race 4. (17:28) Crown Perth (bm72+) 1200m
8 River Rubicon (Bet Now:Β $2.15) is a talented three year old for Steve Wolfe and no reason why he can’t win again. Dominant win over this track/distance two weeks ago against his own age and ran solid time relative to the meeting in doing so. Now taking on some decent boys and girls here, but confident he measures up.
The turnaround in form from 1 Express Time (Bet Now:Β $7.50) has been something else. She’s gone from being a borderline midweek mare to now being a proven Saturday metro performer, the latest win being a last stride victory over 1100m here a fortnight back. Hard to beat with luck from the draw.
3 La Farola (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is a talented daughter of Deep Field for Michael Lane that resumes. This mare hasn’t raced since the La Trice Classic over 1800m when down the track and at the end of her prep behind Beret. No public trials leading in, but can sprint well fresh and has class.
Race 5. (18:12) Gimcrack Stakes 1100m
Any hint of normal luck from the gate and it’s race over for 1 Amelia’s Jewel (Bet Now:Β $1.60). Simon Miller trained filly that debuted in the Supremacy and she made an absolute mess of them in arrogant fashion. If she can overcome the gate and win this, they may as well cancel the Karrakatta and give her the trophy.
2 She’s Greysful (Bet Now:Β $9.50) looks like she will use this as a prep run for the Karrakatta. Hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions at Pinjarra when a narrow second to Sheeza Belter. Thought her recent Lark Hill trial win was very sharp. Will improve with the run I think, but has the runs on the board.
Good test here for 7 Rathmine Lady (Bet Now:Β $26.00) but I thought there was plenty of merit in her debut win here last Wednesday. Sat off a fast speed before being presented wider and she let down hard late to overhaul them and win. Clearly harder here, but beware the unbeaten horse.
Race 6. (18:45) Perth Stakes 1100m
3 Street Parade (Bet Now:Β $11.00) looks good odds here at an each way quote. He hasn’t raced for four weeks since a solid effort here from just off the speed when third to Man Crush. He gets the Visors on first time, draws to get a soft run and gets a weight pull. He only runs well IMO.
11 Givemeonereasonn (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is the x factor here. Simon Miller trained juvenile that is on debut and he could be the one from left field for a Karrakatta. He has trialled up really well in readiness for start one and overall, the depth here is a touch on the thin side IMO.
5 Snowdome (Bet Now:Β $3.80) is a son of Rommel for Neville Parnham that resumes. Thus guy had a two run prep in the Spring to start his career, placing each time and showing talent. Has been kept on ice for a Karrakatta prep and his recent Lark Hill trial was a pretty solid piece of work.
Race 7. (19:20) Glenroy Chaff (rs1mw) 1400m
1 Time Scale (Bet Now:Β $3.70) has found winning form and confident she can hold it. Lovely ride from Carbery saw her win here last Wednesday, and albeit it was a midweek, it actually had depth to it. Gets in well after the claim and should get a sweet run in transit from the draw.
Back to 1400m I don’t like for 3 Trade War (Bet Now:Β $3.50) but Michael Lane has got him going super. The run over the mile was here two weeks ago when back in the run and working to the line pretty well late in the piece behind Crescent City. If he’s within range 400m out, he can be dangerous.
8 Recharger (Bet Now:Β $27.00) has the provincial form, but I think is a must for exotics. Ran over 1230m at Albany last time out and closed the race off okay despite not really threatening behind What About Moses. 1400m should be fine for him and I could certainly entertain for wider exotics.
Race 8. (20:00) Grandstand Cup 1500m
4 Son Of A God (Bet Now:Β $2.70) is back on track I feel. Jury was out after a plain run in the Pinjarra Classic but his effort two weeks ago in the Bunbury Stakes was full of merit behind surprise winner Carocapo. He should appreciate the rise to 1500m and I think he’ll take beating here.
2 Son Of Bacchus (Bet Now:Β $8.00) has an excellent third up record so he commands respect. He ran in the Bunbury Stakes from two weeks ago and closed off his race well but did get held up late, potentially unlucky not to finish closer. If he gets clear air this time around, he can win for sure.
10 Roman Flirt (Bet Now:Β $20.00) is a Team Pearce trained staying mare that resumes. Her best will come over further than this, but I will say she’s certainly had the grounding, with four trials to get ready for her return, so the grounding is there to run well fresh. Market will be the guide.
Race 9. (20:40) Morley Growers Market (rs1mw) 1800m
9 Sunsphere (Bet Now:Β $10.00) for me in the get out. He ran over 1500m here two weeks ago and closed off okay without threatening behind Native Chimes. He was a few weeks between runs so you’d like to think there is improvement to come and up to 1800m, he’s the pony to bet on.
1800m has to be a query with 1 Native Chimes (Bet Now:Β $15.00) but he’s got the right racing pattern to give this a shake. Lovely front running steer from Holly Watson saw the mare get the win in the race mentioned above. Had enough on the line but had a big enough break to cling on. Last bit will test but she’ll give a great sight.
2 Tiff Has Spoken (Bet Now:Β $20.00) has more upside than most and is a proven Saturday metro performer. Ran over 1400m here two weeks back where he just found them a bit sharp but liked the way he found the line very late in the piece behind Bragwell. Definite threat if he gets a drag into the race.
