A strong nine race card will be run and won at Sandown on the Lakeside course this Monday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:50) : Yulong Park Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Kharir (Bet Now: $8.00) was a major flop when debuting on the Parks track at Morphettville behind Split Lip, but that form has been franked with the winner saluting at Stakes grade recently. Kharir then had the blinkers on at Cranbourne and improved dramatically when being an unlucky second behind Woman In Red. With the two runs under the belt now, she should know what the game is about and is the one for me here.
Big Danger: 7 Uptown Gal (Bet Now: $7.50) had late market support when debuting on her home track at Cranbourne a couple of Friday nights back and despite sitting out the back, the filly closed off strongly late in the piece behind Woman In Red. Looks to have room for improvement and is a definite threat for mine.
Long Shot: 4 Lilas (Bet Now: $10.00) is the big watch here. Robert Smerdon trained filly on debut in the Yoshida colours and has been given a really grounding for her debut, with five overall trials, starting in September. Draws the inside gate and the big key/lead is that Williams is booked to ride. Market watch for sure.
Race Two (13:20) : Chef’s Hat South Melbourne Handicap (70) 1600m:
Back Me: 1 Soju Warrior (Bet Now: $2.80) comes back to Melbourne after absolutely spanking them last time out on the Parks track at Morphettville, winning by nearly seven lengths without being fully extended. Very promising galloper for the Kavanagh yard and he does strike a very winnable race here. Keen to see what he does.
Big Danger: 8 Netherfield (Bet Now: $8.00) is an above average three year old for Mick Price who has been really good in two runs back from a spell. Gave them a nice spanking first up in a Terang maiden before racing on the Hillside course nearly five weeks back and running well behind the Stakes performed Zunbaqa. That reads well for this and the blinkers are on first time.
Long Shot: 14 Macattack (Bet Now: $8.00) is a handy filly for the in form Archie Alexander yard who resumed against the older mares at Geelong over 1500m, which is certainly not an easy task, but she showed a lovely turn of foot when asked and drew clear late. Did run well in town last prep, so she is capable, and you can’t ignore the Alexander/Childs combo.
Race Three (13:50) : Elvis ‘Ricky’ Thurgood Handicap (64) 1300m:
Back Me: 11 Necklace (Bet Now: $6.00) is a progressive filly for the Waterhouse/Bott yard who should take some beating here. First up run at Newcastle was a beauty before being sent to Victoria and Geelong where she dominated proceedings from the front and absolutely spanked them. Should roll over to the lead from the gate here and has upside.
Big Danger: 2 Pedrena (Bet Now: $3.80) was kept quite safe in the market when resuming at Pakenham and she rewarded her followers with a superb fresh win, showing a lovely turn of foot when asked for the big effort from Jake Noonan. Was competitive at Stakes level during Cup week, so we know she’s classy enough, and there should be natural improvement.
Long Shot: 18 Sneakers (Bet Now: $31.00) is a handy filly that resumes for the Nigel Blackiston yard. Her opening prep in the Spring was quite encouraging, winning on debut before running okay in town. Jump outs at Flemington have been good and though drawn a touch awkwardly, she is a threat at odds.
Race Four (14:20) : Chandler Macleod Handicap (70) 1400m:
Back Me: 15 Port Triano (Bet Now: $12.00) for me here. Mark Kavanagh trained galloper that had a frustrating run of outs next to his name prior to racing over 1300m here at the midweeks where he looked in a bit of trouble but was lifted over the line by Oliver to get the deserved win on the board. Now that he has won a race again, he could go on with it.
Big Danger: 13 Stormsabrewing (Bet Now: $7.00) is a talented mare for the Henry Dwyer camp who hasn’t raced for 30 days since racing over the Flemington mile where she got back in a leader dominated race and closed off quite well late in the piece behind Strike Force. Back to 1400m is a big tick, as well as Sandown, and she will be strong late if the tempo is okay.
Long Shot: 11 Downhearted (Bet Now: $8.00) is in a similar boat to what Port Triano was. Running well but just not greeting the judge. Got slightly held up when racing over 1300m here last time out and making ground late when eventually clear. Finding it hard to win, but perhaps Newitt going back aboard will spark improvement.
Race Five (14:50) : Elaren Security Services Handicap (64) 2100m:
Back Me: I think 15 Diamond Meteor (Bet Now: $6.00) is one of the better bets on the program. Handy mare for the Waterhouse/Bott stable who was 25 days between runs when racing over 1500m at Geelong last time out where she sat on speed and ran well but just lacked the turn of foot produced by the winner Macattack. 2100m looks perfect for her, she should control things in front and take some running down.
Big Danger: 1 Le Boss (Bet Now: $10.00) was forever known as a tease, but he has found some grit and ticker since being transferred to the Robbie Griffiths yard. He ran over 1800m here last time out where he looked in a bit of trouble picking up but Rawiller got stuck into him and he surged hard late to grab the win. 2100m is a different pain barrier but the claim for Ben Thompson helps.
Long Shot: 20 Prescience (Bet Now: $9.00) is a hard horse to follow and trust, but this is the sort of race where he could surprise. He ran in the race won by Le Boss and I thought he did a pretty good job considering he was up on the pace and I don’t think it’s his go. He is better when ridden with cover. If that can eventuate, he can bounce back.
Race Six (15:20) : Ladbrokes Odds Boost Extra Handicap (70) 1600m:
Back Me: 9 Chloe’s Comet (Bet Now: $3.50) had her first Victorian run on the Hillside course a couple of Wednesdays back and did a really good job I thought when second to Single Note given that mare controlled things on speed and kicked hard. Chloe’s Comet is much better when she can lead, and that should eventuate here. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: 12 My Obsession (Bet Now: $5.50) can be a hard mare to trust/follow, but she is racing very well at the moment without cracking it for the win. She ran over the mile on the Hillside course last time out and closed off strongly late against the tempo when third to Single Note. Not sure the speed will be hot, but if she can sit closer, she’s a definite threat.
Long Shot: 7 Super Mover (Bet Now: $41.00) was an eye catcher first up at Geelong over 1300m when sitting back off the speed and working home with purpose late to run fourth to Gigi Girl. That race was obviously weaker than what he faces here, but he is a horse better suited over further, and I can see the 1600m Sandown offers will be ideal for his racing pattern.
Race Seven (15:50) : Le Pines Funerals Handicap (64) 1200m:
Back Me: 2 Banachek (Bet Now: $3.10) looks the safe way to go here. Darren Weir trained youngster that spanked them on debut at Ararat, winning by nearly five. He then went to Ballarat and got off the speed and was off the bit before the turn but chased hard and nearly got the win but had to settle for a close up second. Draws to get a lovely run from the gate and rates highly.
Big Danger: 1 Ashlor (Bet Now: $6.00) toughed it out strongly on speed to win fresh at Moonee Valley before going to Bendigo (Metro) where he was given a very ordinary ride. Eased back to last and was held up pretty much the entire straight. His racing pattern is going forward, so if that does eventuate here, he’ll take some beating.
Long Shot: 12 The Passage (Bet Now: $6.00) is a stablemate of Banachek who resumed in a Ballarat maiden where he was hard in the market and though he took his time to wind up, you had to be impressed by is final 150m, really hitting the line with purpose. Always respect these Weir runners that come straight to town.
Race Eight (16:20) : Toronado @ Swettenham Handicap (78) 1300m:
Back Me: Landed with 4 Maternal (Bet Now: $4.80) This Godolphin mare was hard in the market when resuming against the boys on Mornington Cup Day and was one of many victims of the bias yet she was still very good in defeat behind Sir Mask. Second up now and hopefully an even playing field and Melham steers. Ticks alot of boxes.
Big Danger: 3 Florelle (Bet Now: $3.40) is a handy mare for the George Osborne camp that resumed against the mares on Mornington Cup Day and closed off well to run third to Sullivan Bay in a close finish. Second up last time in she went very close to knocking off Camdus on Moe Cup Day. That form reads very well for this.
Long Shot: 1 Stylish Miss (Bet Now: $12.00) looks the value in the race. Resumed against the mares on Mornington Cup in a slowly run race, as well as the bias, yet she was a real eye catcher late, working home with purpose to run within two lengths of Sullivan Bay. Should come on from that outing and with a cold steer, she can ambush late.
Race Nine (16:50) : buyaracehorse.com.au Handicap (70) 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Makatiti (Bet Now: $8.00) for me here in the get out. This gelding resumed over 1100m at Bendigo a tick under five weeks back where he was given a lovely run just off the speed before getting into a slight pocket. Eventually got clear but just lacked the turn of foot produced by the impressive winner Baby Don’t Cry. Again draws to get the sweet trip and Lane jumps on now.
Big Danger: 11 Blue Tycoon (Bet Now: $3.90) is a smart three year old for the Hayes/Dabernig team who looks one of the hardest to beat here off the back of a very encouraging return to the track at Bendigo (Metro) where he got back in the run and was held up for a few strides, but finished off strongly to run second. Just needs better luck here to go close.
Long Shot: 14 Themis (Bet Now: $8.00) is the very interesting runner here. Former Gai Waterhouse runner that had a stint in QLD but is now with the Hope team. She is talented when she is right, but first up for the new stable in a pretty strong mares race…lot of unknowns, but the stable has a great record with mares, so a definite market watch.
