Ten races will be run and won at Randwick on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out seven metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (11:05) Schweppes Hcp 1400m
6 Honeycreeper (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1400m for James Cummings. This filly ran against the older horses at Rosehill two weeks ago and ran well I thought in a race shape that didn’t suit her behind Tycoonist. Back to her own age, up in trip, she’ll prove hard to beat.
1 Revivalist (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up after winning last Saturday over 1200m at Newcastle. It turned out to be a messy race but credit to him, he was strongest late and was strong to the line and through it, suggesting 1400m will be ideal and overall, this race is thin re depth.
9 Chitabe (Bet Now: $61.00 TOP ODDS) is a David Payne trained filly that resumes and you always have to respect this stable when they produce a juvenile at 1400m+. This girl had a two run Autumn prep to start her career, the latest coming in the Beaumont on Newmarket Day at Newcastle when back and closing off nicely. Trials have been inconclusive but I think she has got talent.
Race 2. (11:40) Tab Highway Hcp (c2) 1200m
18 Cavalier Charles (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) is a nice horse for Matty Dale. Four weeks between runs since contesting a Rosehill Highway where he loomed to win under J Mac but Catanzaro was too sharp and too good. Cavalier Charles, though beaten, did spank the rest. That form reads well for this and a testing 1200m I do like for him.
10 Lady River (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has done little wrong this time in for Scott Singleton. Opening two runs for the prep saw her bolt up over 1100m at Scone. She then went to a Highway at Rosehill two weeks ago and was quite good from the back when third to Hellenism, who was far from disgraced in the Ramornie at Grafton. That form just reads so well for this.
11 Orbital Express (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive three year old for Jeremy Gask that comes into this Highway as a last start maiden winner at Newcastle, but it was quite a strong win given she was back near last in the run on the turn. The time was ordinary relative to the meeting but she looks like a filly that will love 1200m on the big track.
Race 3. (12:15) The Agency Real Estate (bm72) 1200m
4 Fastconi (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) is bursting to win a Saturday race and I think he gets his chance here. To me, he is a horse screaming for 1200m. Last couple have come over 1100m at Rosehill, the latest being two weeks ago when bloused near the peg by The Big Easy. Reckon up in trip on a bigger track, he can get a deserved win at this level on the board.
1 Vreneli (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) should put himself on speed and try hard. That was the case when he resumed in the race mentioned above won by The Big Easy. Attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but first up, his condition just gave way late. He’ll improve with the run and being trained here, he should be okay on the wet ground.
7 Zoumist (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a Ryan/Alexiou filly that resumes. It does appear that fresh is best for this girl, with two of her career wins coming early on in her respective campaign. Blinkers off for her return, she has trialled well leading and is okay when it comes to wet ground.
Race 4. (12:50) City Tattersalls Club (bm78) 1800m
8 La Chevalee (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS) is racing well without winning for the Maher/Eustace camp. Should have won here two back. Then went to Rosehill where she got back and was never really a winning threat but her finale was more than sound behind Papal Warrior. Up to 1800m, she’s likeable.
1 Zing (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is racing really well this time and with a last start win under the belt, her confidence should be up. Chris Waller mare that comes here as a last start winner, albeit a narrow winner, but it was a win, and perhaps a confidence boosting win that can see her go on with it in a competitive race.
I think this run will determine just how well 3 Badoosh (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is going. All three runs back from a spell, he has teased to suggest he is racing well, but can’t rubber stamp that just yet. Gets to a more suitable trip and fourth up, he should be at peak fitness, so this is D-Day.
Race 5. (13:25) Elite Sand & Soil (bm78) 1600m
1 Morton’s Fork (Bet Now: $41.00) won’t know himself in this class of race. He is used to racing at Stakes level. Resumed in a fast run 88 race at Rosehill where he was run off his legs for the most part, but picked up and I thought he was very good late behind Oscar Zulu. Second up last prep, he was five lengths off Mister Sea Wolf and down to 59.5kg after the claim, I could easily have something on him at odds.
4 Papal Warrior (Bet Now: $3.80) has become a winning machine. Once upon a time, he was a nonny, but things have changed his past couple. Was able to wear down Tycoonist two back, then backed it up and was dominant two weeks ago at Rosehill. Only has to hold his form to go close yet again.
11 Matowatakpe (Bet Now: $13.00) is flying this time in for Bjorn Baker. Looked a good thing on paper last time out at Warwick Farm and surprisingly he got to $4+ at one stage before being backed in late and despite being off the bit before the turn, he powered to the line and was too good. Now he has a win on the board, he can go on with it.
Race 6. (14:00) Midway (bm72) 1200m
6 Just Field (Bet Now: $4.80) should prove hard to beat. She ran in the inaugural Midway two weeks ago at Rosehill and finished off with real purpose from the back when second to impressive winner Our Bellagio Miss. She has very strong form around her yet gets in very well for a race like this.
8 Wander (Bet Now: $7.00) hasn’t raced at 1200m for a little while but off the resumption, I think he’ll appreciate the six furlongs. Resumed in the Midway a fortnight back and was good from off the speed behind Our Bellagio Miss, running third. With natural improvement, he’ll take beating.
5 Get The Idea (Bet Now: $5.00) is a fascinating runner. Go back to his 3YO season, he was touted as a potential Derby prospect, running in the Rosehill Guineas behind Castelvecchio. Now with Greg Hickman, is he being trained as a sprinter? Because the resumption at Warwick Farm was electric and #TeamThey were on board, landing decent bets at odds. He has class and off the resumption, he’s right in this.
Race 7. (14:40) Acy Securities (bm88) 1800m
7 Great House (Bet Now: $2.90) should prove hard to beat here. He just got too far back in a fast run race at Rosehill three weeks ago but loved the way he closed off when third to Brutality. You’d like to think that run will toughen him up and would be fitting that a son of Galileo could win so soon after his passing.
1 Opacity (Bet Now: $4.80) has a liking for Randwick with wet ground so he will get conditions to suit here. He was solid last time out at Rosehill behind Brutality, but overall, I thought he had his chance. But he does save his best for Randwick and the way the track has been playing when wet, gate one should be okay.
8 Steely (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beauty for the Ryan/Alexiou camp. I loved the way he knuckled down to win two weeks ago at Rosehill. The race was there to be won and as he has done on a number of occasions throughout his career, he dug in when required and was too good. He can measure up in 88 grade for sure.
Race 8. (15:20) Bowermans Furniture (bm88) 1400m
Chris Waller has 4 Oscar Zulu (Bet Now: $2.70) absolutely flying at the moment and no reason why he can’t win again. Admittedly he got the perfect run in transit two weeks ago at Rosehill but still had to take advantage of it and that he did, finishing best to continue a purple patch. He can continue it some more.
5 Surf Dancer (Bet Now: $7.50) is a big query here. Quality import from the UK that makes his Australian debut for the WaterBott camp. His form from the UK reads solid enough for an 88 and his trials suggest he is liking the Australian lifestyle. If there is a market push, I could save on him.
9 Kordia (Bet Now: $141.00) is a quality galloper for James Cummings that is here off a freshen up. I’m willing to put a line through his last start effort, which saw him finish down the track at Eagle Farm, a track where some handle it and some don’t, where he fits into the latter category. Looked in great order in a Canterbury trial so keen to see how he goes.
Race 9. (16:00) Tax Today (bm78) 1400m
Just forget the last start of 9 Steel Diamond (Bet Now: $8.00). Nash rode a very negative race on the mare in what was a negatively run race, and the way the race panned out, she had no chance. The resumption behind Gravina was a beauty and off that, I think she’ll be winning races this time in.
2 Vitesse (Bet Now: $20.00) is racing well for Chris Waller, will be out of trouble near the speed and giving her all. Thought she had every chance two weeks ago at Rosehill when leading and run down late by Taksu. That horse was just too tough and too good on the day. Perhaps back to Mares grade will help her cause.
10 Exotic Ruby (Bet Now: $7.50) is an honest mare for Bjorn Baker that should be around the mark. Had the suck run behind the slow speed at Rosehill last start but she stuck on and battled away okay in defeat when third to the very much in form Expat. Doesn’t win out of turn but is honest.
Race 10. (16:35) Heineken (bm78) 1000m
8 Our Bellagio Miss (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Greg Hickman trained mare that is flying this time in. Trialled up like a bomb prior to a total forgive fresh here when wide and pulling hard behind Malkovich. She then went to the Midway where she looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted under a lovely steer from Tommy Berry. Proven at this level, she’s hard to beat.
12 Nikholi Eagle (Bet Now: $4.40) will be in front and giving a bold sight. Just bogged down by the weight I thought at Rosehill last time, on speed and feeling the pinch late behind noted swimmer Magic Ruler. Gets massive weight relief this time around, like him back to 1000m and on speed, he’ll look the winner at some stage.
3 Handspun (Bet Now: $10.00) has class/quality and that will carry her a long way here. Resumes for Godolphin after a two run prep in the Summer where she was really plain. Not sure what happened there, but has been given a good break, has trialled up well leading in and handles wet ground.
