Race 1. (11:50) Country Racing Victoria (Bm78) 1000m
8 Zion (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks the one to beat in the opener. Nick Ryan trained gelding that resumed two weeks ago down the straight here and was a real eye catcher from the back, closing off with purpose when third to Senegalia. Better for the run under the belt and gets Blake Shinn aboard, which to me signals plenty of intent. Like him a lot.
1 Direct (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a smart animal for Lloyd Kennewell that resumes. He hasn’t raced since Magic Millions Day when failing to run out the 1300m in The Syndicate behind Centrefire. Short course racing is his go in life so fresh at 1000m I like and his recent jumpout win at Cranbourne was very sharp, so keen to see how he goes down the straight.
10 Night Of Delight (Bet Now: $SP.00) resumes for Tom Dabernig and is capable of measuring up with her best. She hasn’t raced since November 11 when a solid third over 1000m at The Valley behind talented animal Dusse, beaten two lengths. Bomb fresh horse and with two strong jumpouts under the belt, the grounding is there. Watch the market and see what it does.
Race 2. (12:25) Rod Johnson Hcp 1420m
1 Steparty (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very smart juvenile for Paul Preusker and see no reason why he can’t make it 3/3 to start his career. Lot of quality about his debut win at Ballarat before racing here two weeks ago where he was absolutely trucking in the run under Yendall before angling into clear air and he made a mess of them late. Off that, 1400m no issue and with change up speed, could be a case of good luck beating him, even with the weight.
13 Dolphin Skin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a nice horse for Team Corstens and confident she runs well. She ran over 1200m here on debut two weeks ago and I thought did a pretty good job from off the speed when second to impressive winner Steparty, who looks a Spring class juvenile, so I think that form reads very well, and up to 1400m, fitter, Dolphin Skin takes beating.
4 Bolted In (Bet Now: $SP.00) has to be rated as the one to beat. He has won two of his three career outings and each win has had good merit to it, winning on debut at Balaklava before being far from disgraced in the David Coles. He then went to the Parks track at Morphettville two weeks ago and was impressive from off the speed. Seemingly holding his form really well and only has to hold it to be around the mark.
Race 3. (13:00) Murray Cox Hcp 2540m
8 Le Baol (Bet Now: $SP.00) commands some level of respect. He hasn’t raced since the Warrnambool Cup when far from disgraced in defeat, running fourth to surprise winner Rolls. Kept up to the mark with a couple of jumps trials, so whether that is a trial to sharpen him up, or if he’s a future jumper…either way, he’s good enough to beat these.
7 Teewaters (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise in trip for Dan O’Sullivan. He comes through the Shaiyhar race from a fortnight back here and didn’t do a bad job after trying to make a sustained run, just feeling the pinch late in the piece but stuck on well enough to run third. Good record when stepping up to this trip and fourth up, should just about be at peak fitness.
1 Hopeful (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found positive form and he can certainly go on with it. Annabel Neasham trains this gelding, who ran two weeks back at this track/distance when tucked in behind the speed and tried hard to reel in Teofilo Star but that horse had complete control in front and gave nothing else a look in. Hopeful stuck on well enough and with that positive form next to his name, he can build off it.
Race 4. (13:35) 2023 Ctry Achiever W Nichols 1100m
4 I Am Bene (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a beauty for Andrew Clarken and with natural improvement from the resumption, she is going to take beating. She resumed a few weeks ago in the Proud Miss and despite little luck in the straight, I thought she found the line really well late behind Snapped. Good second up record and drops miles in grade/depth. Hard to beat, quite clearly.
Hard to ignore 7 Sigh (Bet Now: $SP.00) for Peter Moody. Talented mare that is several weeks between runs since a dominant win down the straight at Flemington, sitting near the speed before going through her gears under Lafferty and she gapped her rivals in a super return. There is depth to this line up, and not the biggest fan of Carleen, but down in the weights with change up speed and upside, she appeals.
2 Poland (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very talented animal for Michael Moroney that resumes. He hasn’t raced since December 17 when attempting to lead throughout over 1400m here and giving a very solid kick when a narrow third to Nicolini Vito, who was flying at the time. Not sure what the stable thinks he is, whether he’s a 1400m horse or a sprinter. Jumpouts have been strong and he does have class.
Race 5. (14:10) Bruce Gadsden (Bm90) 1420m
2 Party For One (Bet Now: $SP.00) is flying for the Price/Kent camp and hard to get away from her. Blake Shinn has been the key to this mare finding winning form. He has been able to get her out of the gates and find a spot in the run rather than flop out the back and be a sectional star. The mare now knows she is a race horse and with that, is becoming a winner. She can win again.
3 Good And Proper (Bet Now: $SP.00) has to be given another look. She is a good mare for Matty Ellerton that comes here off the back of a plain run over the mile at Sandown in a fast run race where she got back in the run and just couldn’t get involved, failing to beat a runner home. Back to 1400m and back to Flemington, she can run a much improved race.
8 Adele Amour (Bet Now: $SP.00) can run an improved race provided the track isn’t too bad. She ran last Saturday at Sandown and just seemed a bit bogged down on the wet track and struggled to pick her feet up behind impressive winner Pacific Ruby. She can be hit and miss at times but when she is on, she is a very good mare when right, so don’t dismiss her.
Race 6. (14:45) Brian Beattie Hcp 1420m
11 Monarch Of Egypt (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a ripper for Team Hayes and is one of the leading chances. Coffey gave him a 12/10 steer at Sandown a few weeks back and the end result was a dominant win, proving quite strong to the line and held a safe margin on his rivals. He is one of a few at this meeting that could produce an end of prep run, but hard to knock the way he’s racing.
2 Crosshaven (Bet Now: $SP.00) is Crosshaven but this race has really thinned out after scratchings. He ran behind King Magnus two weeks ago here and just didn’t quite seem 100% on the ground, not picking up when he needed to. With the strong winds, this track will be a road come race time here, and he is a dry track specialist, so he can bounce back.
3 Frankie Pinot (Bet Now: $SP.00) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but he will be launching over the top. He ran two weeks back here and his run was full of merit. He got a mile out of his ground but loved the way he found the line late in the piece behind King Magnus, beaten two lengths. if he gets a drag into the race and is within range, he is good enough to take this out.
Race 7. (15:25) The David Bourke (Bm90) 1620m
12 Brayden Star (Bet Now: $SP.00) can win again for the Busuttin/Young camp. Did a very good job first up when a closing second to British Columbia before going to Sandown three weeks ago where he got a lovely ride from Ollie and the horse surged hard the final 100m or so for a dominant win. He’s got good room for improvement and strikes another winnable race IMO.
1 Jimmy The Bear (Bet Now: $SP.00) should prove hard to beat here for the in form Patrick Payne. He ran two week ago over 1400m here where he was a bit flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and found the line with purpose when second to King Magnus. He is third up here, so he should just about be at peak fitness and with a more positive ride, he’ll take beating.
I’d love to see them ride 2 Bermadez (Bet Now: $SP.00) with intent. They are riding him with a sit this time in and for some reason, I have no idea why they are doing that because his best runs have come when settling forward of midfield/on speed. Four weeks between runs, he races best with fresh legs…if they go forward, he can take this out.
Race 8. (16:00) Sir Henry Bolte Hcp 2000m
11 Artzino (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to be in for a really good prep for the Price/Kent camp and is clearly the one to beat. He resumed three weeks ago at Sandown over the mile and was a real eye catcher from off the speed when a closing third to Elkington Road, beaten narrowly. He’ll eat up 2000m and with enormous upside to come, it’ll take a good one to hold him out IMO.
12 Bitcoin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a lightly raced former Kiwi for Lindsey Smith that is showing promise. Both runs have come over 2000m at Ballarat, winning impressively fresh before taking on the older horses where he got off the speed and found the line well enough without threatening when second to Kipyegon. Hard fit now, can settle close in the run, hard to beat.
4 Distrustful Award (Bet Now: $SP.00) has more upside than most so I wouldn’t be penning him. He resumed in the Elkington Road race from three weeks back at Sandown where he was just run off his legs and was never a factor when down the track. Might want one more, but his efforts from the Spring would see him go very close in a race like this.
Race 9. (16:33) Ken Cox Hcp 1100m
9 Kin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a hard horse to catch at times but she is certainly good enough to take this out. Game second fresh at Gosford to Vowmaster before going to Randwick where she seemed to get every chance under Zac Lloyd but she was very plain late in the straight and didn’t finish the race off at all behind Iowna Merc. Off the first up run, she likely wins, and I reckon the straight course will be a big tick.
5 Who Dares (Bet Now: $SP.00) commands respect for Pat Carey. Model of consistency that is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize, which was the case here a fortnight back when near the speed throughout and stuck to the task really, only just feeling the pinch late when third to Legio Ten. That was her first run in a few weeks so with room for improvement, she should be around the mark.
Looks like they will go hard in front so looking for a swooper and 13 Bye Bye Betty (Bet Now: $SP.00) fits the bill. She’s had two career outings, winning impressively on debut over 975m at Swan Hill before going to 1100m at Bendigo where she got a mile out of her ground but was a real eye catcher late in the piece behind Legio Ten, who has won in town to frank the form. Fast run 1100m, down in the weights, she’ll take beating.
